Burgundy 2024
The 2024 Burgundy vintage is one of the purest expressions of both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in recent times. These are wines that embody the very ethos of Burgundy. Whilst there is no hiding that it was one of the most challenging years experienced by many vignerons, from Chablis down to the Côte Chalonnaise, growers rose to the occasion, making some beautiful wines.
This is a return to the style of a previous era: lower alcohol, graceful delicate reds, vivacious whites, all with drive, vigour and energy. Don’t look for power in this vintage, but you will find plentiful refinement and appellational identity. This is exactly what made Burgundy famous all those centuries ago.
Red Wines | 2024 is the smallest red wine harvest in living memory. The most impacted vineyards were in the Côte de Nuits and, most unusually, it was the famed Grands and Premiers Crus, normally so protected, in the villages of Vosne Romanée, Gevrey Chambertin and the like, which have produced the least wine. Never have I seen such empty cellars, with so few barrels. Tasting at Domaine Grivot we counted just seven barrels of Clos Vougeot in comparison to forty-five last year! However, what has been produced is exhilarating and stylish.
This is Pinot Noir at its most refined. Forget the dark black fruits of an année solaire, these wines are all about red fruit flavours, delicacy and purity. The best have a svelte, powdery tannic profile and, thanks to a warm heat spike just prior to harvest, are fully ripe and mature. Whilst it would be wrong to put them in the same league qualitatively, their profile is very much in the mould of the 2010 vintage. Jacques Devauges at Domaine des Lambrays concurred, commenting: “They have a similar ethereal quality to the 2010s, not as deep but with the same profile.”
White Wines | The yield reduction in 2024 for Chardonnay is more varied. Sadly, Chablis had the smallest harvest for at least 80 years according to Didier Séguier at Domaine William Fèvre. Again, most unusually it was the prized Grands and Premiers Crus, particularly on the right bank of the Serein, that bore the brunt of April frosts and a freak hailstorm on 1st May. Laurent Pinson quoted a 95% loss in his parcel of Premier Cru Vaillons. Although the Côte de Beaune didn’t completely escape, it was less affected. Reductions were closer to 50%, with Puligny Montrachet and St Aubin a little more impacted than Meursault and Chassagne Montrachet.
Stylistically, the 2024 whites are extraordinarily good. From Chablis through the Côte de Beaune and into the Côte Chalonnaise, the wines are sensational. 2024 has the makings to be one of the very great white vintages of recent times. At this early stage they are a mix of 2017 and 2014. They have the brilliance and energy of 2014, but arguably even more charm. And, whilst not necessarily as powerful as 2017, the best 2024s have some of its breadth and beautifully refined florality. This really is a white vintage to seek out, playing its hand with appellational identity, charm and longevity.
Seasonal Challenges
Respecting nature was the key to a successful 2024 vintage. No other vintage in recent times has challenged today’s vignerons to such an extreme. This is a year which required more man hours in the vineyard than any other; as one grower said, “Nature doesn’t take a holiday!”
Preparation for the new vintage started well. A wetter than usual autumn and winter of 2023/24 was a welcome relief following a very dry 2023. Growers were relieved to see the water reserves restored and were confident that hydric stress would not be an issue for their vines in 2024.
A mild winter and warmer than average temperatures in February and March led to early budding. Bruno Colin commented that the vegetative cycle started quickly and the first green buds appeared on 21st March in his Chassagne vineyards putting them potentially at risk of an early frost. The inevitable happened on three consecutive nights, 21st to 24th April, seriously impacting on the potential yields of Chablis and southern Côte de Beaune.
After this severe cold snap, the vines made a healthy recovery thanks to a mild May ahead of the all-important flowering season. Flowering is make or break for any fruit crop and the first real indicator towards potential harvest yields. Unfortunately, in 2024 the fluctuating early June temperatures played against the Burgundy vigneron. A mixed and disruptive flowering (what the French call coulure) with some failed fruit set had a huge impact on yields throughout the Côte d’Or.
Rainfall in June and July posed further challenges, with the vines requiring constant attention. A combination of warmth and humidity is when disease is its most virulent, and mildew was the biggest offender in 2024. But, to quote Mathilde Grivot, “If you did the work there was opportunity to be rewarded.” A thought echoed by Cyril Audoin when he said, “This was not a year to take the weekend off!” That said, there was no escaping the challenges, but crucially for the wines themselves, the biggest impact was on quantity and not quality.
The month of August changed the face of the vintage and was its true saviour. Warmth and sunshine increased day by day all the way through into September. This allowed maximum ripening of the small bunches hanging on the vines. The first picking started in Meursault on 10th September in ideal conditions and continued all the way through to the later ripening locations in Chablis, many of whom finished on 24th September. Erwan Faiveley observed an additional benefit of a rare phenomenon of northerly winds through the Côte d’Or between 16th and 19th September, further concentrating the juice and providing additional nuance and complexity to the wines.
In the Winery
The 2024 harvest only took a matter of days for most growers, a consequence of the low yielding crop. In the winery, gentle fruit handling was the order of the day. Jean-Nicolas Méo was not alone when he explained how he extended the cuvaison from 2 to 3 weeks. This careful and soft maceration process extracted the maximum of flavours and nuance out of his Pinot Noir grapes.
2024 has produced wines lower in alcohol, recalling a previous era. Many wise and senior growers were comfortable in returning to a traditional technique of chaptalizing the juice during the fermentation process. To quote Mathilde Grivot and her father Etienne: “It extends the fermentation by 3 to 4 days, so the fruit and alcohol carry the tannins better. Like a Boeuf Bourguignon, the longer in the making the better the dish!”
There is no right or wrong when it comes to whole bunch vinification; it is all about personal choice and style, not quality or complexity. Domaines such as Bize and Chandon de Briailles continued their practice of 100% whole cluster. Mathias Gros adjusted the amount according to the vineyard; 75% whole bunch for Echezeaux, but 100% destalked for his Hautes Côtes de Nuits. Geraldine Godot at Domaine de L’Arlot destemmed all her cuvées 100% in 2024. We can only say we tasted exceptional wines from all approaches.
A common theme from many red wine makers was how their wines have evolved and progressed in cask. Some vintages show their true colours as soon as the fruit arrives in the winery, whilst others can be more reticent and only progress once in cask. The 2024 vintage is very much in the latter category. Cyril Audoin said, “Just like the 2010s, they were initially underestimated at harvest time, but they just kept getting better and better in barrel. The 2024s are doing the same!”
The finishing touch is when to bottle. We tasted some lovely wines already in bottle, with several growers keen to capture the fruit characteristics early on. Others are bottling a little later in the spring of 2026, which will give their wines additional time to evolve. This again comes down to feel, appellational style and personal choice.
That Special Something
2024 reminds us why Burgundy is so special. Its land and terroir, its singular focus on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and its local and seasonal variations are unique.
Our perception of global warming is that the seasons are getting hotter with more sunshine. In the world of wine, Northern Hemisphere wine growers have benefitted from consistently riper fruit the last few decades. However, the vagaries of weather still do exist and are possibly more extreme than ever before.
The vignerons of the Côte d’Or have been at the forefront of the organic and biodynamic revolution in winemaking. The 2024 vintage tested their commitment to the extreme. Certain growers did revert to traditional methods to protect their vines; whilst others accepted their fate. Whatever their practices all our growers are respectful of nature, the soil and their vines. 2023 was the largest harvest since 1999 and sadly it seems an outlier. Whether it be through drought, poor flowering and fruit set, frost or other challenges small crops are here to stay.
The myth that after an exceptionally small harvest the vine conserves energy to over-produce the next year has been dispelled in 2025. The drought and heat in 2025 saw to that and it is an equally miniscule crop. The pressure of demand over supply on Burgundy’s greatest wines shows no sign of abating. The En Primeur system of releases may have its critics, but the fact is that for 2024, if you like Burgundy, this is the time to buy.

Prices & Allocations
The conundrum for all the growers is the exceptionally small harvest in 2024. All our domaines are aware of and sensitive to current market conditions. Barring the odd exception, they have restrained from a farmer’s temptation to compensate small yields by increasing prices. So, the 2024 prices have not moved for the majority of our growers this year. We in turn, despite the weaker sterling, have respected their efforts and endeavoured to keep prices the same as the 2023 vintage.
The yield reductions have had a serious impact on our allocations this year. We will try and share these around as fairly as we can. It will mean that a greater number of wines will be on allocation, and many of the most sought after cuvées will be packed in three or single bottle cases. In addition, some estates with so little fruit have made combined blends of their Premiers Crus to achieve a sensible volume of a single cuvée. The wines are clearly marked as such, both a rarity and a triumph!
