Brunello di Montalcino 2021

“There is something magical about the 2021 Brunellos... a triumph for Montalcino”
Eric Guido, Vinous

We are excited to launch our 2021 Brunello di Montalcino campaign offering the spectacular new releases from the following leading estates:

2021 | Vintage Overview

For a vintage that produced such great results the 2021 growing season certainly had its challenges and complexities.

A wet winter built up healthy water reserves, especially in the clay rich soils to the north east of Montalcino. This was to be vital for the summer months. A severe frost on the nights of 7th and 8th April, following a period of unseasonably mild temperatures, affected the buds that had appeared prematurely in low lying areas, both to the south and north with many growers suffering losses between 25-40%. However, according to Francesco Ripaccoli at one of our favourite estates, Canalicchio di Sopra, this acted as "Mother Nature’s green harvest" as there was then sufficient water in the soil to feed a reduced amount of bunches over the hot July and August period. Well timed rains towards the end of August and into September, and importantly cool nights, also played their part in preserving the acidity levels in the wines. In the lead up to the harvest, conditions remained moderate alternating warm days and cool nights allowing the fruit to reach optimum ripeness.

Ultimately the success of 2021 is a testament to the hard work, diligence and dedication of the growers in the vineyards.

Montalcino Classifications

Brunello di Montalcino 2021

Sangiovese (known locally as Brunello) is the only permissible grape variety. In order for a wine to become a fully-fledged Brunello, DOCG rules legislate that a minimum of 2 years must be spent in oak with a further 4 months in bottle. Whilst many age their wines for considerably longer (36-42 months), there is currently a trend appearing amongst the leading growers to reduce this in order to preserve freshness and tension in the wines.

A Brunello is eligible for release onto the market on 1st January, five years after the harvest.

Rosso di Montalcino 2024

The Rosso classification has become one of profound importance to the region, offering the perfect expression of each estate for drinking at a younger age. The best growers designate specific vineyard sites for the production of Rosso and consequently the quality level has reached new heights. A Rosso is released onto the market after only twelve months of ageing in stainless steel or oak. Rossos from the leading estates generally start at around £22 per bottle compared to a Brunello at £45+. The heightened quality of this category has hugely shifted our focus towards Rosso over the last 5 years.

Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2020

Released at the same time as the 2021 Brunello, we will only be offering the most compelling 2020 Riservas. In all but the greatest vintages, a further six months in barrel rarely elevates the wines to such a superior level that it justifies the increase in price. This year look out for Il Marroneto’s Madonna delle Grazie Riserva (100 points) and of course Poggio di Sotto’s Riserva (98+ points), both of which are knockout examples.

CANALICCHIO DI SOPRA

Francesco Ripaccioli is one of Montalcino’s most dynamic and progressive young winemakers. His grandfather Primo Pacenti founded the estate in 1962 and in 1967 Canalicchio di Sopra became one of the twelve founders of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino. The estate’s 19 hectares lie to the northeast of the town and are split between the enviable Montosoli and Canalicchio ‘crus’ which offer optimal airflow, unique exposure, and a selection of differing microclimates. Canalicchio’s wines are amongst the benchmarks for purity and elegance.

Firmly established amongst the elite of Montalcino, Canalicchio di Sopra’s 2021s are superlative examples of the vintage. Although the April frost affected some of the estate’s lower vineyards reducing volumes by 30%, the quality of fruit is truly exceptional and this year their single vineyard Vigna Montosoli has produced one the vintage’s most compelling Brunellos. The estate’s flagship wine is of course their 2021 Brunello di Montalcino and the grapes for this are sourced 50/50 from both the Montosoli and Canalicchio vineyards and give a brilliant interpretation of the vintage.

Rosso di Montalcino 2024

Canalicchio’s Rosso is the perfect entry point and essentially the calling card for the estate’s Brunello di Montalcino, offering sumptuous purity and elegance in a deliciously approachable style. The 2024 opens with red cherry, pomegranate and cranberry whilst boasting notes of dark plum, violet and spice. Soft, fine tannins flow across the palate balanced by splashes of juicy vibrant fruit and fresh herbs. If there’s a better value Rosso on the market we are yet to see it. Drink 2027 - 2033. "Delicious and loaded with finesse, the smooth palate offers strawberry compote, red cherry, licorice and crushed mint accompanied by taut, refined tannins." 96 points. Kerin O'Keefe

A worthy contender for one of the ‘annata’ wines of the vintage, the 2021 is racy and explosive in the glass. Waves of dark cherry, wild strawberry and mineral tones cascade across the palate with subtle citrus flavours adding vibrancy and energy. There is lovely concentration to the fruit and a fine structure that brings everything together. This is an unmissable Brunello that will need a minimum of 3 years in the cellar and drink well in to the late 2030s. Do not miss!

CANALICCHIO DI SOPRA | THE SINGLE VINEYARDS

Fifteen years of painstaking soil and clonal research into each of the vineyard sites at Canalicchio di Sopra revealed several unique micro-terroirs, which led Francesco to produce two single vineyard Brunellos: La Casaccia, first released in 2015, and Vigna Montosoli, launched in 2018. La Casaccia’s calcerous clay-rich soils give phenomenal texture and an opulent feel. Vigna Montosoli’s galestro soils showcase a more mineral, saline style; a wine of elegance, complexity and longevity.

The Montosoli will undoubtedly be regarded as one of the successes of 2021. This is a multidimensional wine that will require extensive cellaring. Violet, Morello cherry and rosemary and sage scents lead to a saline, stony, mineral rich yet firm palate. This is a complex Brunello of the highest order and an outstanding example of the vintage. GIANNI BRUNELLI

Former Sienese restaurateurs, Gianni and Laura Brunelli established this wonderful 7-hectare estate in 1987 following the death of Gianni’s father. Together they quickly developed a reputation for producing some of the most impressive Brunellos in the region as well as an outstanding Rosso.

The Brunellis have always been fervent exponents of organic viticulture, steering clear of herbicides and chemicals, with the belief that a conscientious hands-on approach in the vineyard is key to producing high-quality wines. Yields are deliberately kept low, and the grapes are hand-harvested in order to guarantee the quality of fruit. Sadly, Gianni passed away unexpectedly in 2008, however Laura continues to uphold her husband’s philosophy of winemaking, whilst bringing her own distinctive style to the wines. The 2021 is a scintillating example of the vintage; intense and harmonious with superb balance.

IL MARRONETO

The Il Marroneto estate, situated just below the walls of Montalcino to the north east, produces world class Sangiovese. Here the altitude and exposure to the winds from the north combine to produce wines of scintillating complexity and minerality. Winemaker Alessandro Mori, pictured with his son Iacopo, was described as "the Sangiovese whisperer" by Monica Larner of the Wine Advocate due to his incredible ability to produce almost weightless wines of innate beauty rather than power. These 2021s are simply sensational, as is the incredibly rare release of the 2000 Madonna delle Grazie Riserva in magnum.

"The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino wafts up with an exotic blend of crushed sour cherries and dried violets complemented by cedar spice box and nuances of incense. It is seamless and silken in feel, displaying notable weight while also coming across as graceful and refined, with a remarkably pretty blend of wild strawberries and a crunch of minerality. A raspberry sauce concentration and sour citrus twang remain as edgy tannins linger, offset by a bump of riveting acidity. This is a fantastic vintage for Il Marroneto's Brunello, here taking on a level of complexity and concentration I usually associate with the Madonna delle Grazie." Drink 2030 - 2046.

The 2021 leaves a chewy sensation and an array of sweet tannins that pinch at the cheeks as an air of rosy inner florals mixes with hints of Earl Grey and spice. In 2021, Madonna delle Grazie has taken on a whole new identity, relying more on beauty than power." Drink 2020 - 2046. 98 points. Eric Guido, Vinous

This is a textural masterpiece, weighty yet graceful, penetrating, tart and intense, all balanced by radiant acidity as masses of red fruit envelop the senses. The 2020 leaves the palate stained with primary concentration, finishing structured and long with the silkiest tannins imaginable. A tinge of pomegranate and clove fades over the course of a minute or more. MASTROJANNI | NEW

In 1975, the south eastern zone of Montalcino was wild and untamed, a terrain largely untouched by anyone but local farmers. With the stunning backdrop and protection of the Monte Amiata and the Orcia river winding its way through the valley, Gabriele Mastrojanni recognised the potential here. He identified certain soil types that would offer a definitive expression of the Sangiovese grape and from here the Mastrojanni estate was born. Since 2008 the estate has been in the hands of the Illy group (of coffee fame) who have invested heavily. Their ethos embraces nature, the eco system and sustainability with everything designed in be in total harmony with the environment. In the cellar the wines are aged in traditional large oak barrels for 36 months prior to a further 6 months in bottle.

Having visited the estate several times over the last few years, we feel that the 2021 vintage is the perfect moment to share this excellent producer with you.

IL PALAZZONE | NEW

We are delighted to introduce Il Palazzone, an estate that we have been following closely for the last few years. Located just to the south west of Montalcino (perched above Le Potazzine) this small estate sits at altitudes between 400 metres and the legal limit of 600. Its beautiful, lofty location captures the cool breezes of the famous Tramontana wind from the north reducing temperatures at night allowing the grapes to retain all of their natural energy and freshness in hot weather. The philosophy here is very traditional. Picking and sorting are by hand and the elevage takes place in large 50hl wooden barrels that support the lengthy ageing process.

POGGIO DI SOTTO

In the heart of Castelnuove dell’Abate to the southeast of Montalcino, Poggio di Sotto’s vineyards enjoy a wonderful micro-climate. At altitudes ranging between 250m-400m, they are sheltered by the ancient volcano Monte Amiata and cooled by the breezes that flood through the Orcia valley.

Immortalised by the previous owner, Piero Palmucci, a student of the Brunello guru, Giulio Gambelli, Poggio di Sotto’s traditional approach to winemaking sees ageing solely in large Slavonian oak casks and their style is based on a fine-tuned balance of power, grace and unerring finesse. Poggio’s Rosso di Montalcino is arguably the finest to be released onto the market after an additional year of bottle age, and we wholeheartedly recommend it. As for the Brunello di Montalcino, it sits amongst the most profound expressions of the Sangiovese grape and is a true benchmark for the region. Unmissable.

LE POTAZZINE

Gigliola Giannetti and daughters Viola and Sofia run this organically certified estate just to the southwest of Montalcino. Born and raised in Montalcino, Gigliola started making wine under the guidance of Franco Biondi Santi. Both Franco and fellow Brunello legend, Gianfranco Soldera, were close friends of Gigliola and important mentors, who have had a profound influence on her winemaking style. She prioritises purity thanks to slow, spontaneous fermentations and long maturations in traditional large oak casks. Today, daughter Viola heads up the winemaking, but Gigliola remains closely involved.

Le Potazzine owns some of the highest altitude vineyards in Montalcino. The constant airflow and exposure here is hugely beneficial in keeping frost at bay, eradicating disease in poor weather, and cooling the vines in the height of summer. Gigliola’s understanding of the terroir of Montalcino particularly, with respect to the issues that surround solar vintages, has led to the acquisition of a new vineyard in one of Montalcino’s highest points to help mitigate for the future. These are beautiful, highly sought after Brunellos that exude elegance, balance and freshness.

SALICUTTI

Following the change of ownership in 2015 the style of the wines at Salicutti has gravitated away from the rusticity of the previous era towards a more finesse-driven style under the Eichbauer family. Latest news is the acquisition of an additional 2.6 hectares to compliment their existing 4.5 and the fabulous state-of-the-art winery. The progressive nature of this estate is very apparent. We were particularly enthused by the entry level 2021 Brunello (Village) this year which offers wonderful early appeal and value. The terroir-driven ‘crus’, Piaggione and Sorgente, are both sensational this year, reflecting the high calibre nature of the vintage to perfection. In addition, the Riserva Teatro 2020 concludes a brilliant range of wines.

SALVIONI | LA CERBAIOLA

Since the first release in 1985, Giulio Salvioni has harnessed the extraordinary potential of the Sangiovese grape from the family’s La Cerbaiola vineyard to the south east of Montalcino. Artisanal in every sense, the Salvioni family believe that in order to achieve the finest expression of Brunello, everything must be conducted by hand, from vineyard to cellar to bottle, and yields must always be kept low.

Alluring purity, minerality and fine streamlined tannins define the wines of Salvioni, and their Brunello di Montalcino, from the famous Cerbaiola vineyard, is consistently one of Montalcino’s most sought after releases. SESTI | CASTELLO DI ARGIANO

The Sesti family’s wines have gained a huge following over the years, and they are amongst the most rewarding that you will find anywhere in Montalcino. Situated in the warm south western zone, the stunning backdrop of the Monte Amiata provides excellent protection to the estate with Mediterranean breezes adding cool ventilation. Traditionally made in every sense, the elevage takes place in large Slavonian ‘botte’ (oak casks), producing a style that is always characteristically inviting straight out of the blocks, but with plenty of potential to age.
