Brunello di Montalcino
2020
“This is not a vintage to skip... The successful wines of 2020 are absolutely gorgeous”
Eric Guido, Vinous

We are excited to launch our 2020 Brunello di Montalcino campaign by offering the new releases from the following leading estates:
Canalicchio di Sopra
Le Potazzine
Sesti
Conti Costanti
Gianni Brunelli
Salicutti
Poggio di Sotto
Salvioni
Over the last three years it has been fascinating to witness the evolution of the Brunello 2020s, both from barrel and in bottle prior to their official release onto the market. 2020 has yielded wines of outstanding quality, offering stylistic contrast to last year’s 2019 release. The finest 2020s are exquisitely balanced and finely structured, with wonderful purity of fruit. They are harmonious in every sense, full of charm and a joy to taste.
2020 will be forever etched in the memory as the ‘lock down vintage’. For the growers of Montalcino who were naturally restricted in all forms of movement, it provided a unique opportunity to obsess over their vineyards, and, with much more time on their hands, it allowed them to adopt a vine by vine approach, which in any other year wouldn’t have been possible. Francesco Ripaccioli of Canalicchio di Sopra remarked, "The time that we spent in the vineyard was decidedly superior to any other activity at the winery.”
In summary, the finest 2020 Brunellos are sleek and expressive with silky tannins, wonderful clarity of fruit, plenty of freshness and very approachable.
With prices remaining stable on last year, we are confident that the estates that we represent will give huge pleasure to all lovers of Brunello and Sangiovese, both in the shorter term and over the next decade.

2020 | Vintage Overview
The summer of 2020 was hot. However, the fundamental difference that separated this solar vintage from others such as 2019 and 2017 is that it wasn’t nearly as dry. Thankfully, the water reserves deep in the soils were brimming with winter rain that that had fallen between October and January, and freezing conditions removed any fear of disease in the vineyards. Temperatures slowly began to rise in May and the flowering occurred in healthy conditions. However, July and August brought extreme temperatures that pushed the thermometer past 37˚ C, forcing the vines to shut down, until a fortuitous 40mm of rain fell at the beginning of August, ushering in cooler conditions that prevailed until the harvest. The success of each grower this year largely depends on canopy protection and how they responded to protect their fruit during this hot spell. Who was willing to go the extra mile in the vineyard? Diligence and long hours spent amongst the vines, alongside a detailed understanding of individual microclimates, paid dividends and were the key factors that ultimately brought the finest results.
Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
Sangiovese (known locally as ‘Brunello’) is the only permissible grape variety. In order for a wine to become a fully-fledged Brunello it must be aged for a minimum of 2 years in oak and 6 months in bottle. A new Brunello is eligible for release onto the market on 1st January five years year after the harvest.
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG
The Riserva category has often suffered from a lack of definition. In all but the greatest vintages, few feel that a further six months in barrel elevates the wines to an extent that justifies the uptick in price. However, in a classic year where the concentration of fruit demands more time in wood, such as with this year’s 2019 Riservas, there is total justification for the top estates to produce a Riserva. In particular, Salicutti and Poggio di Sotto have produced incredible results within this category this year.
Rosso di Montalcino DOC
The Rosso classification has become one of profound importance to the region. No longer are these entry level reds regarded purely as ‘baby Brunellos’ but high-quality wines that offer a perfect expression of the style of the estate. The best growers now designate specific vineyard sites to the production of Rosso, and consequently the quality has reached new heights. A Rosso is released onto the market after twelve months of ageing in stainless steel or oak, and these wonderful earlier drinkers are certainly where the keenest bargains are to be found.

Canalicchio di Sopra
Francesco Ripaccioli is one of Montalcino’s most dynamic and progressive young winemakers. His grandfather Primo Pacenti founded the estate in 1962 and in 1967 Canalicchio di Sopra became one of the twelve founders of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino. The estate’s 19 hectares to the northeast of the town are split between the enviable Montosoli and Canalicchio ‘crus’ which offer high altitude coolness, unique exposure, and a selection of differing microclimates. Canalicchio’s wines are stamped with a signature purity thanks to ageing solely in large old oak casks. In 2020, the estate has again produced some of the finest expressions of the vintage and it won’t come as a surprise that the critics have placed their Brunellos amongst the elite. Highly recommended.
Rosso di Montalcino 2023
£105.00 per 6 bottles IB
£220.00 per 6 magnums IB
Canalicchio’s Rosso is the perfect entry point and essentially the calling card for estate’s Brunello di Montalcino, offering purity and elegance in a deliciously approachable style. The 2023 opens with red cherry, pomegranate and cranberry whilst boasting notes of dark plum, violet and spice. Soft, fine tannins flow across the palate balanced by splashes of juicy vibrant fruit and fresh herbs. If there’s a better value Rosso on the market we are yet to see it. Drink 2026-2030

"You could just get lost in the alluring aromas of plum, fragrant blue flower, freshly mown hay, forest floor and leather on the beautiful 2020 Brunello from Canalicchio di Sopra."
96 points. Kerin O'Keefe
A worthy contender for one of the wines of the vintage, the 2020 opens with a burst of dark cherry, wild berries and clove. There is an incredible intensity to the fruit yet the tannins are sweet, round and pliant. With no Riserva produced in 2020, all of the juice from the designated Riserva vineyard, known as Vigna Vecchia Mercatale, has gone into the straight Brunello this year, adding extra depth and accentuating the quality of this fantastic wine. An unmissable Brunello that can be approached relatively early but will develop further over 10 years. Drink 2026-2036.

Brunello di Montalcino La Casaccia 2020 (on allocation)
£315.00 per 3 bottles IB
£260.00 per magnum IB
"This is a model of purity, lifted and refined with soft textures and cool-toned acidity"
96 points. Eric Guido, Vinous
Fifteen years of painstaking soil and clonal research into each of the vineyard sites at Canalicchio di Sopra revealed several unique ‘micro terroirs’, which led Francesco to produce two single vineyard Brunellos, the first of which was La Casaccia. From a south-facing vineyard situated directly in front of the estate, the clay-rich, mineral and calcium soils of Casaccia give a wine of phenomenal texture, minerality and complexity. The 2020 oozes plum, forest berries and blood orange. Drink 2027-2039

Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli 2020 (on allocation)
£315.00 per 3 bottles IB
£260.00 per magnum IB
"the hottest vineyard site in the appellation at the moment... Of the new releases in this portfolio, I think you will find this wine to be the most complete and age-worthy." 96+ points. Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
Only 4133 bottles have been produced of this knock out Brunello from the prized Montosoli hill. Pure and complex with crisp mineral tones, the Montosoli bombards the senses with dried rose petal, cherry, blackberry and blue fruit encompassed by fine mineral-laden tannins. The acidity gives an incredible nervous tension and this tapers off into a long, saline finish. A wine to cellar for drinking. Drink 2029-2041

"captivating.... showing strength and finesse"
97 points. Kerin O'Keefe
Released in certain years to reflect the character of the vintage from a single vineyard known as Vigna Vecchia Mercatale. The Riserva 2019 bombards the senses with multidimensional flavours, notably dried dark cherry, Asian spice and ripe red fruits. A wine of incredible power and intensity harnessing all of Canalicchio di Sopra’s refined energy and balance. A Brunello to savour over many years. Drink 2028-2045.

Le Potazzine
Gigliola Giannetti and daughters Viola and Sofia run this organically certified estate just to the southwest of Montalcino. Born and raised in Montalcino, Gigliola started making wine under the guide of Franco Biondi Santi at his famous Tenuta del Greppo estate. Both he and Gianfranco Soldera were close friends and important mentors who have had a profound influence on her winemaking style, which prioritises purity thanks to slow, spontaneous fermentations and long maturations in traditional large oak casks. Today, her daughter Viola heads up the winemaking, but Gigliola remains closely involved.
Le Potazzine owns some of the highest altitude vineyards in Montalcino, which proved a huge asset during the summer heat of 2020. The estate also benefits from the cooling westerly winds that flow in off the Tyrrhenian Sea. Gigliola’s understanding of the terroir of Montalcino particularly, with respect to the issues that surround solar vintages, has led to the recent acquisition of a new vineyard in one of Montalcino’s highest points to help mitigate these issues for the future. These are beautiful Brunellos that exude elegance, balance and freshness and are highly sought after.
Toscana Rosso Sangiovese IGT 2023
£99.00 per 6 bottles IB
The Gorellis produce just 6,000 bottles of this wine from some of their younger Sangiovese vines. Fragrant, floral and fresh, it is raised in stainless steel to keep it crisp and juicy. The perfect wine to pop and pour over the next handful of years. We love its soft, fine structure and crunchy red cherry fruit. Drink 2025-2027
Rosso di Montalcino 2023
£125.00 per 6 bottles IB
"I love the lively and food-friendly personality of this pretty wine... one of the better Rossos from this vintage."
90 points. Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
An incredibly well-made Rosso 2023, the elegant, perfumed nose is full of forest berries, raspberry compote, fresh herbs, and black tea. It shows the bright-fruited nature of the vintage beautifully and the rounded tannins provide satisfying grip that will allow this Rosso to age very well. It finishes long and saline. Drink 2026-2031

"This is a total pleasure on the palate, soft, round, nearly creamy in feel, yet fresh... As is often the case, Le Potazzine does a fantastic job in warm vintages."
96+ points. Eric Guido, Vinous
Le Potazzine’s elevation at 510 metres is hugely beneficial in warm vintages such as 2020, offering cool nights and plenty of ventilation during the day. This is a high toned, classically structured Brunello with fantastic depth and length on the palate. An intoxicating bouquet of dark cherry, sage, wild red berries and mineral leads to an elegant palate. With an alcohol level of just 13.5%, Le Potazzine’s Brunello is a massive success and ranks amongst the finest 2020s. Drink 2028-2040
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2019
£890.00 per 6 bottles IB
£325.00 per magnum IB
£675.00 per double magnum IB
"radiant... Bold and full-bodied, the tense palate delivers dried cherry, cranberry, licorice and a hint of almond liqueur... A gorgeous wine."
97 points. Kerin O'Keefe
Only the fifth Riserva to be released by the estate, when conditions are optimum, this knockout 2019 Riserva boasts a complex array of flavours, notably blood orange, exotic spice, lavender, blueberry and dark chocolate. There is considerable structure accompanied by wonderful freshness here to allow for longer term ageing. A blockbuster. Drink 2030-2046

Sesti
We were devastated to hear of the passing of our friend and the estate's founder, Giuigi Sesti, last September. He was one of life’s true characters, an incredible man who was held in the highest regard across the region. With the reins now in the hands of daughter Elisa, who has been instrumental in the winemaking in recent years, we expect few changes at this beautiful estate. Sesti’s Brunello has won many fans over the years, and it is certainly one of the most rewarding that you will find anywhere in Montalcino. The stunning backdrop of the Monte Amiata provides excellent protection to the estate with Mediterranean breezes adding cool ventilation. Traditionally made in every sense, the elevage take place in large Slavonian ‘botte’, producing a style that is always characteristically inviting straight out of the blocks, but with plenty of potential to age. We know that Sesti’s 2020 will delight all who taste it.
Rosso di Montalcino 2023
£190.00 per 12 bottles IB
£240.00 per 6 magnums IB
With its succulent ripe strawberry, raspberry and plum character, Sesti’s Rosso exudes charm and appeal and is one of our absolute ‘go-tos’ as an everyday Tuscan red. Enjoy this beauty upon arrival and over the next 3 years. Drink 2025-2029

"A gorgeous Brunello, it's emblematic of this vintage in that it's enjoyable now while offering the potential to improve over the coming 12-15 years."
94 points. Audrey Frick, jebdunnuck.com
As always, the team at Sesti produce a deliciously ripe and rounded style that offers earlier approachability and fabulous drinking over the mid term. The 2020 offers up warm raspberries, cranberry, clove and wild herbs which flow across the palate leading to a generous succulent finish. A fantastic Brunello that will win many friends. Drink 2026-2032
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Phenomena 2019
£420.00 per 6 bottles IB
£445.00 per 3 magnums IB
"The 2019 Sesti Phenomena is a stunning wine... while this is already tempting it has years to go so hold for even more complexity." 97 points. Kerin O'Keefe
2019 brings a powerful richer style of Phenomena to the fore in line with the character of the vintage. Concentrated dark plum, blood orange and blackberry flavours mingle with red currant and cranberry. Crushed stone and spice add an extra dimension to create an exhilarating Riserva. Although still very youthful, this is by far the most complex Phenomena that we have encountered in several vintages, and we anticipate that it will have a long life ahead of it. Drink 2028-2035

Conti Costanti
The Costanti family has owned this 10-hectare estate in Montalcino for over 200 years. Andrea Costanti inherited the estate from his uncle in the mid-1980s and has worked hard to make Conti Costanti one of the benchmark producers in the region.
The Conti Costanti style is characterised by striking elegance and intensity, combining Montalcino's characteristic power with a fragrance and purity derived from high-elevation vineyards in the northern part of the zone. These vineyards are planted over 400 metres above sea level on galestro soil, which is typical of the area. The 2020 is wine of huge concentration and intensity and one that will require at least 8 years of aging. It is quite simply a brilliant effort.
Brunello di Montalcino 2020
£325.00 per 6 bottles IB
£125.00 per magnum IB
"The 2020 Brunello from Costanti is an absolute stunner. All about fragrance, flavor and finesse" 98 points. Kerin O'Keefe
Costanti thrive in warm years such as 2020 due to their north easterly exposure and cooler altitude. Understandably, Andrea Costanti therefore places 2020 amongst a trilogy of superb releases. Flavours of blood orange, redcurrant, sweet red cherries and warm spice lead to a long, concentrated finish. This is a knockout rendition from the Costanti team that will need to cellar for a minimum of three years. Drink 2029-2039
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2019
£300.00 per 3 bottles IB
"2019 was a fantastic vintage in Montalcino and in particular for storied producer Conti Costanti. Andrea Costanti’s compelling 2019 Brunello Riserva is exquisite... It’s absolutely breathtaking." 100 points. Kerin O'Keefe
A yardstick for the Riserva classification, Costanti’s 2019 Riserva embraces the finest points of what was a powerful and concentrated vintage. Mineral tones from the galestro soils add a youthful crunchiness alongside ripe dark cherry, cranberry scents and basalmic notes. This is a classic in every sense and one that will need extended time in the cellar to reach its drinking window. Drink 2030-2042

Gianni Brunelli
Former Sienese restaurateurs, Gianni and Laura Brunelli established this wonderful 7-hectare estate in 1987 following the death of Gianni’s father. Together they quickly developed a reputation for producing some of the most impressive Brunellos in the region including an outstanding Rosso and a delightful Merlot-based blend known as Amor Costante.
The Brunellis have always been fervent exponents of organic viticulture, steering clear of the use of herbicides and chemicals, with the belief that a conscientious hands-on approach in the vineyard is key to producing high-quality wines; yields are deliberately kept low, and the grapes are hand-harvested in order to guarantee the quality of fruit. Sadly, Gianni passed away unexpectedly in 2008, however Laura continues to uphold her husband’s philosophy of winemaking, whilst bringing her own distinctive style to the wines. The 2020 is one of the most profoundly intense, harmonious and balanced expressions of Brunello that you’ll find.
Amor Costante Toscana Rosso Sangiovese IGT 2022
POA
A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Sangiovese, Amor Costante comes from the family’s Podernovone vineyard in southeast Montalcino. High-toned red cherry, raspberry and strawberry flavours are softened by hints of juicy red and black plum, peppered with clove and star anise. The palate is plush, rewarding, juicy and opulent. Foodwise, you can enjoy this with literally anything. Drink 2026-2035.
Rosso di Montalcino 2023
POA
This 2023 is exquisitely floral scented with fresh peonies, violets and rose. Sweet, bright red cherry and mouthwatering blood orange fruit are framed by a vibrant acidity and softly textured tannins. The finish is lifted and has a pleasing, salty mineral edge. This is as grown up a Rosso as they come and one that will give many a Brunello a run for its money. Drink 2027-2033
Brunello di Montalcino 2020
POA
"There is a lot of life in this vibrant Brunello... I especially love the mouthfeel achieved here. It's that combination of richness and extreme silkiness that sets it apart." 95 points. Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
A fine Brunello of grace and elegance, this mineral-driven beauty displays intense floral flavours alongside an interchangeable array of red and blue fruits. There is overwhelming purity here on the refined, structured palate and this will be one to cellar for several years. An exceptional 2020 from Laura and Adriano. Drink 2030-2045
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2019
POA
"Fragrant and loaded with finesse, the stunning Gianni Brunelli 2019 Brunello Riserva mesmerizes"
98 points. Kerin O'Keefe
A selection of the finest grapes of the vintage from two vineyards which are held back and aged for longer in barrel. Tart red cherries, hints of citrus and wild berries feature in this hugely refined example. Silky and brilliantly balanced, this is a huge success in the Riserva category this year.

Salicutti
Dubbed the "Holy Grail of Sangiovese purity" by Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, Salicutti has benefitted from heavy investment in the winery’s infrastructure by Munich based restaurateur owners, Felix and Sabine Eichbauer. With the state-of-the-art winery now complete, and biodynamic viticulture well underway, it hasn’t gone unnoticed by the critics that the quality of what is produced here has scaled new heights. At only 4.5 hectares in size, the volumes released onto the market are incredibly small in comparison to other Brunello growers. Our visit there last year revealed a set of 2020s that are built on purity, terroir and finesse allied to the trademark structure that we have come to expect from Salicutti. These are wines that will age gracefully for many years to come.
Brunello di Montalcino Sorgente 2020
POA
"lifted, ethereal and refined, with hints of white pepper complicating its ripe wild berry fruit notes."
94 points. Eric Guido, Vinous
Formerly a vineyard designated to Rosso di Montalcino under the previous owner Francesco Leanza, Sorgente has developed over several years into an exceptional single vineyard Brunello. The 2020 is laden with dark raspberry and rose petal scents on a firm structured palate. To us it perfectly showcases the incredible advances that have been made at Salicutti under the Eichbauers. Drink 2026-2036
Brunello di Montalcino Piaggione 2020
POA
"drop-dead gorgeous... The 2020 doesn't miss a beat"
93 points. Eric Guido, Vinous
The 1.2-hectare Piaggione vineyard sits at 420-450 metres of elevation. Normally we might expect a darker and more restrained style in youth, however the 2020 is built on finesse. It displays gorgeous elegant red fruit flavours and a distinct silkiness to the palate. As it grows in the glass the trademark mineral and crushed stone character begin to emerge, yet it remains finely poised in the mouth. This is a knock out Piaggione that is terroir-driven and supple. Drink 2026-2036
Brunello di Montalcino
Riserva Teatro 2019
POA
"From galestro soils with quartz, the wine offers a very fine texture that is absolutely seamlessly delivered."
97 points. Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
With the 2019 vintage the tiny Teatro plot has truly come of age. The galestro soils interspersed with flecks of quartz have produced a wine of wonderful texture and elegance. Wild red berries and redcurrants with lifted floral tones have given the Teatro a distinct prettiness this year. It could easily develop into one of the leading 2019 releases with extra maturity. Drink 2026-2036

Poggio di Sotto
In the heart of Castelnuove dell’Abate to the southeast of Montalcino, Poggio di Sotto’s vineyards preside at altitudes that range between 250m-400m. Protected by the ancient volcano Monte Amiata and cooled by the sea breezes that flood through the Orcia valley, this is a wonderful micro-climate. Poggio di Sotto’s traditional approach to winemaking sees ageing solely in large Slavonian oak casks and their style is based on a fine-tuned balance of power, grace and unerring finesse. Poggio’s Rosso di Montalcino is arguably the finest to be released onto the market after an additional year of bottle age, and we wholeheartedly recommend it. As for the Brunello di Montalcino, it is undoubtedly one of the most profound expressions of the Sangiovese grape and the benchmark for the region. Unmissable.
Rosso di Montalcino 2022
POA
If you taste Poggio di Sotto’s Rosso blind you could easily be fooled into believing that this is a Brunello, such is the complexity it shows. The latest 2022 release is simply joyous focusing on wild red berries and subtle citrus notes which are encompassed in a fine mineral structure. Enjoy this beauty from 2026-2035.
Brunello di Montalcino 2020
POA
"Poggio di Sotto 2020 Brunello di Montalcino shares many similarities with the epic 2016 vintage in terms of its pretty perfumes and polished length... a fresh and charming interpretation of Sangiovese." 97+ points. Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
Often considered the benchmark for Brunello, it would be difficult to disagree once you have sampled the 2020. Although youthful, this latest release displays a multi dimensional, kaleidoscopic character that few estates can achieve, Ripe red currants, blood orange, citrus and dried rose are just a few of the notes that emerge from a swirling glass. Warm plums and cherries cascade across the palate and fine tannins coat the finish. This is unbelievably fine with a finish that lasts for several minutes. Hide this away in the cellar 5 years. Drink 2030-2042
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2019
POA
"The wine exhibits dusty tannins from the galestro-rich schistic soils that have a huge impact on the elegance and complexity of this exceptional and cellar-worthy Sangiovese... Everything is in perfect form and balance." 99 points. Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
Poggio’s Riserva hails from a single vineyard primarily made up of galestro rich marl-stone soils planted in 2001 which add an extra dimension in terms of complexity. Tasting the 2019, you notice the added muscle and power of what was a fine, structured vintage, but the key here is balance and refinement, and the Riserva 2019 has that in spades. It is wine for the ages and surely the closest rival to their 2016 Riserva to date. Drink 2030-2060

Salvioni
Since the first release in 1985, Giulio Salvioni has exploited the extraordinary potential of the Sangiovese grape in this part of Tuscany. Artisanal in every sense, the Salvioni family believe that in order to achieve the finest expression of Brunello, everything must be conducted by hand, from vineyard to cellar to bottle, and yields must always be kept low.
Alluring purity, minerality and fine streamlined tannins define the wines of Salvioni and their Brunello di Montalcino from the famous Cerbaiola vineyard is consistently one of Montalcino’s most sought after releases. Their highly prized Rosso comes from declassified Brunello from this same vineyard and as such is always snapped up by savvy wine collectors.
Rosso di Montalcino 2023
POA
Salvioni’s Rosso is renowned as a brilliant ‘under the radar’ offering and a mini Brunello in every sense. The 2023 is a Rosso of unbounded potential, an elegant mix of strawberry, red cherry, violet and floral notes. As is often the case there is excellent potential here. Enjoy this knockout Rosso upon arrival and over the next 5 years. Drink 2026-2032
Brunello di Montalcino Cerbaiola 2020 (on allocation)
POA
"a fantastic stony texture and a persistent finish. This is poised to be a phenomenal vintage from the Salvioni family and their team." 96-99 points. Audrey Frick, Jebdunnuck.com
Salvioni’s 2020 is a triumphant success. Wild raspberry, blueberry and blood orange flavours flood the palate. This is an exquisite, silk-laden Brunello that offers unparalleled levels of refinement and a super fine structure that will allow it to age over several decades. An outstanding in 2020 and such a joy to taste. Bravo Giulio, David and Alessia! Drink 2028-2040
