Burgundy En Primeur 2023 Côte de Nuits
THE WINES OF THE CÔTE DE NUITS
The vineyard slopes running from Dijon to just south of Nuits St Georges are known as the Côte de Nuits, encompassing of some of Burgundy’s most famous villages; Gevrey Chambertin, Chambolle Musigny, Vosne Romanée and Nuits St Georges, to name just a few.
The village of Gevrey Chambertin is recognised for producing the Côte’s fullest wines, with a dense, layered structure, and to its north the communes of Fixin and Marsannay are growing in recognition and stature. Moving south to Morey St Denis and Chambolle Musigny, we find wines which combine a striking fragrance and generosity. Between them and the town of Nuits St Georges lies the prized village of Vosne Romanée, home to so many exceptional Grands Crus vineyards such as Richebourg and Romanée St Vivant. These are famed for making wines with great precision and intensity, full of bright red fruit and mineral energy. Either side of the town of Nuits St Georges are wines under this name which were unfairly excluded from Grand Cru classification (for political rather than qualitative reasons), which are equal in quality to any of the other famous villages in the Côte.
THE 2023 VINTAGE
The glorious landscape of the Côte de Nuits is Pinot Noir’s kingdom, and the 2023 vintage shows off its heady, perfumed fruit aromatics to perfection. The secret to the variety’s success in the great communes around Nuits St Georges this year was judicious control of excess crop, without which you risked losing the nuanced complexities that make this glorious grape variety so revered. The 2023 wines are suave and plush, with the very best possessing stylish, velvet textured tannins. Acidity levels are good, with a careful touch of saline freshness making the wines complete and balanced. Whilst ideal for the early drinker, the finest reds possess all the pedigree to age quietly and carefully in the cellar. It is also worth pointing out 2023 is a vintage in which village cuvées have a consistency of quality that is remarkable to behold, making them particularly attractive as En Primeur purchases this year.
DOMAINE CHARLES AUDOIN | MARSANNAY
Rugby loving Cyril is the fifth generation of Audoins in the commune of Marsannay; the most northerly appellation of the Côte de Nuits, covering 400 hectares. Today it is rightly gaining the recognition it deserves as a fine source of high-class red wines, thanks to an enthusiastic new generation of vignerons, such as Cyril. He is one of several growers within the commune who are hopeful that the 14 lieux-dits which have been proposed to the INAO for a long overdue upgrade may well be awarded Premier Cru status in the very near future. This fine village, a near neighbour to Gevrey Chambertin, most certainly deserves it.
2023 is the domaine’s third year under full organic certification, and Cyril feels this new approach to vineyard management is making the vines more resilient in the face of increasingly variable growing conditions. Asked to describe the 2023 growing season, his immediate response was, “this was the luckiest vintage”. Cyril went on to elaborate that this vintage could be characterised as a series of lucky escapes: although there was frost early in the year, the vines remained unscathed; mildew also struck, but too late to cause any real damage to the crop; and finally, two weeks of hot sunshine arrived just before harvest and ensured completely ripe grapes. Whilst there may well have been a good deal of luck governing the timing of various weather events, Cyril’s careful and attentive winemaking has certainly made the most of what was provided by nature.
Marsannay Cuvée Marie Ragonneau
£145.00 per 6 bottles IB
Named in honour of Cyril’s great-grandmother, who lost her husband in World War One but still managed to keep the estate intact to pass on to the next generation. The fruit for this cuvée comes from the domaine’s oldest vines in five different locations across the Marsannay commune and as such makes for a fantastic expression of the village style. A forward and charming nose is immediately giving with vivid notes of violet, wild mint, and sun-blushed red cherries. Pure, juicy and bright, with supple, rounded tannins, this is a delightfully easy drinking Pinot. Smiles all round. Drink 2025-2034
Marsannay Clos du Roy
£195.00 per 6 bottles IB
Located to the north of the commune on a steep, east-facing slope over a bedrock of hard Comblanchien limestone, this vineyard produces one of Marsannay’s more powerful wines. Sometimes a cuvée that needs time to show its charms, the 2023 does not conform to type and was already bright, open and joyful when tasted in November 2024. Brimming with vibrant notes of redcurrant, freshly picked raspberries and a hint of wild herbs, the limestone influence of the terroir really comes through in the mineral-driven acidity that provides shimmering tension throughout the red-toned core. A subtle tannic grip and a hint of bitter almond bring a pleasing bite and complexity to the finish. Drink 2026-2036
Marsannay Les Longeroies
£195.00 per 6 bottles IB
Under consideration as a Premier Cru, the Longeroies vineyard sits at the north of the Marsannay commune and is split in two, with the upper part sited on limestone slabs and the lower composed of reddish marl. With ripe Morello cherry and grenadine notes on the nose, generous fruit in the mid palate and plush, supple tannins, this cuvée shows more influence from the heavier marls of the lower Longeroies. A velvety expression of Pinot with immediate charm, a hint of savoury heather and gentle, blood orange acidity bring additional layers of interest to the finish. Drink 2026-2033
Gevrey Chambertin
£255.00 per 6 bottles IB
A very charming cuvee, combining Cyril’s ability to produce very suave Pinot Noir wines impressing in their youth with the body and texture one expects from the Côte de Nuit’s most structured appellation. Full, intense with an intriguing sweetness of fruit, finishing with lift and freshness. Drink 2026 - 2038
CHATEAU DE MARSANNAY | MARSANNAY
This impressive estate, like Château de Meursault, is owned by Olivier Halley and is a relatively recent introduction to the portfolio. This is a substantial 42-hectare property, with 28 hectares in Marsannay and the remainder spread throughout prime locations in the Côte de Nuits and as far south as Puligny Montrachet. With the guidance of Stéphane Follin-Arbelet of Château de Meursault, new technical director, Sylvain Pabiot, has been implementing exciting changes at the property. They are currently in the process of converting to organic vineyard management and Sylvain has instigated a more delicate approach to vinifying the Pinots.
Sylvain explains that the changing climatic conditions in recent years highlight the need for Burgundian vignerons to be flexible in both the vineyard and winery. His view is that conversion to organic practices allows him to enhance the freshness of Pinot, bringing out the acidity that’s so natural to the various terroirs of their extensive holdings. Sylvain is also making further changes to the pruning methods used in the vineyards, to control the flow of the sap and thus direct the energy of the vines in pre-determined ways. There is a real sense of focussed, considered winemaking, from a team continuously striving to improve all aspects of both viti- and viniculture at the estate. It is certain that, with all these careful adjustments, Sylvain is moving Château de Marsannay up to a new league.
Marsannay Blanc
£160.00 per 6 bottles IB
Sourced from 3.5 hectares of village-level vineyards that are positioned in mid-slope, this cuvée provides a lively, pretty example of Marsannay Blanc. Open and enticing, bright notes of confit lemons, grapefruit peel and yellow plums sing out of the glass. Ripe, succulent and creamy on the palate, this is a generous white with a very pleasing texture. Softly glimmering acidity supports the fruit through to a mouth-watering finish. Easy drinking and highly approachable. Drink 2025-2030
Puligny Montrachet Cuvée de Maizière
£370.00 per 6 bottles IB
The fruit for this Puligny comes from a 0.5-hectare plot located on the lower slopes of the appellation. The 2023 has beguiling notes of white blossom, sun-ripened greengages, lemon curd and a just a hint of toasted hazelnut. Rounded and generous upfront, there is a vibrant, driving acidity at the wine’s core that brings a distinct wet pebble minerality. A hint of stony smokiness on the finish adds a further complexity to this eminently charming Chardonnay. Drink 2025-2032
Marsannay Rouge
£145.00 per 6 bottles IB
This cuvee is a blend of fruit from 14 different terroirs across the commune of Marsannay and as such is a great expression of the overall Marsannay style. The 2023 shows bright, lifted notes of ripe red cherries and raspberries with a pretty overlay of white pepper spice and dried wild herbs. With rounded, plush and juicy red fruit at its core, this is an immediately approachable Pinot with just the right amount of fine-grained, chalky tannin to provide interest and depth. Charming and very reflective of both the vintage and village. Drink 2026 - 2032.
Marsannay Le Boivin
£180.00 per 6 bottles IB
The vineyard of Le Boivin is centrally located in Marsannay and has a complex patchwork of soils, which include Comblanchien marble, a band of limestone and an outcrop of marl. Château de Marsannay own 0.7 hectares of old vines here, making this a cuvée of abundant depth and complexity. The 2023 shows a wealth of black cherry and dark forest fruit notes, along with hints of bitter almond, graphite and a wild, savouriness. Ripe and densely concentrated, this is a muscular wine with plenty of structure and power. Ripe, fine-grained tannins sit alongside vibrant acidity as the wine finishes on a peppery lift. Drink 2026-2038
Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux
£498.00 per 6 bottles IB
Château de Marsannay own 0.29 hectares of this vineyard site, which is located in the middle of the slope towards the northern end of the Côte St Jacques. Soils here are best described as mixed and are renowned for producing flamboyant, fruit-driven wines that bring immediate, undemanding pleasure. The 2023 certainly conforms to this archetype, with bright and enticing notes of raspberry, red plums and bitter cherries. Fleshy, generous and rounded on the palate, a lovely volume of fruit is supported by fine-boned acidity and a lift of mineral tension. A light chalkiness to the fine-grained tannins brings texture and grip to the finish. Drink 2026-2040
Ruchottes Chambertin Grand Cru
£1,095.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
At the northern end of the Gevrey Grands Crus, Ruchottes is divided into two distinct sections; the Clos Ruchottes, which is owned entirely by Domaine Armand Rousseau, and the lower part of the vineyard, which looks like a rectangular notch taken out of neighbouring Mazis. Hailing from lower Ruchottes, Château de Marsannay’s vines are planted into highly rocky soils dating from the Bathonian period. Dense and brooding on the nose, this wine needs time in the glass to show its interwoven aromas of black cherry, black forest fruits, savoury oak spice and black pepper. On the palate, this is a hugely concentrated, tightly coiled Pinot that has a powerful, muscular presence. Firm yet velvety tannins coral the dense black fruit, whilst a vibrant, mineral-driven acidity brings energy and verve. A sophisticated wine that needs time to unfurl its true potential. Drink 2030-2050
Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru
Price TBC
Situated in one of the finest locations within this famed 50 hectares Grand Cru, the domaine owns less then ¼ hectare just below the old Château. A wine with great body and structure, fine, dense dark berry fruits with a long, continuous finish. Drink 2028-2049
DOMAINE GEANTET PANSIOT |
GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN
Taking its name from founder Edmond Geantet and his wife Bernadette Pansiot, this 70-year-old domaine is now run by son Vincent Geantet and his children Fabien and Emilie. Having outgrown their historical cellars, they have invested heavily in a new winery and today they are reaping the rewards from all the additional space. Their traditional style is to destem 100%, while preferring to have a short period of cool maceration prior to fermentation starting, in order to enhance the colour and aromatic content of their wines.
Geantet Pansiot are one of the later pickers in the commune and in 2023 they delayed their harvest until 6th September in order to allow the grapes to achieve optimum ripeness. As in the previous vintage, Fabien is happy to increase the proportion of new oak for the élevage of the wines. Using gently toasted barrels, he believes this imparts greater suppleness to the wines. Fabien tells us that this was a great year for Pinot Noir, and upon tasting, it would be hard to disagree; the wines are charming, with a sweetness of fruit and concentration of flavours, yet there remains a lively freshness throughout.
Hautes Cotes de Nuits Rouge
£115.00 per 6 bottles IB
Those in search of a laidback, early-drinking Pinot from this year’s release need look no further than here. Vibrant and expressive, the wine displays notes of bramble fruit and tart cranberries, which, when combined with chalky tannins, means that this is so charming from the off. One of the parcels of this blend contains a touch more limestone content, resulting in a refreshing finish.
Drink 2025-2032
Marsannay Champ Perdrix
£190.00 per 6 bottles IB
Year on year, this steeply sloped vineyard always produces one of the estate’s more charming wines and the 2023 is no exception. An exposed site with hard, rocky soils, there is a beautiful balance between tart black cherry and bright red berry notes on the nose. The palate shows undeniable power, yet the tannins are powdery and there is a touch of minerality which keeps the wine feeling lively throughout. Drink 2025-2032
Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes
£300.00 per 6 bottles IB
The domaine has an expanse of 3 hectares of village Gevrey, covering 17 different parcels, aged between 75 and 92 years old. These old vines result in a deeply concentrated and unctuous Gevrey, which displays a depth of blackberry fruit, hints of dried herbs, and subtle toasted oak. The palate is silky, with chalky tannins and juicy berry fruit giving depth, yet it remains refreshing throughout. A very elegant cuvée. Drink 2025-2035
Gevrey Chambertin En Champs
£335.00 per 6 bottles IB
This esteemed lieu dit at the northern end of the village sits just below Champeaux and, such is the complexity on show, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this too is a Premier Cru. With vines a staggering 120 years old, the nose displays delicate spice and sweet liquorice against a backdrop of bramble fruit. Texturally elegant, the tannins are fine and there is a saline stoniness to the finish that is almost tangy, but irresistible, nonetheless.
Drink 2025-2035
Chambolle Musigny Vieilles Vignes
£375.00 per 6 bottles IB
Highlighting the quality of the old vines and their ability to overcome any challenges from the drier summer conditions, Fabien ages this cuvee in 50% new oak. There is an array of fruit on the nose, from tart red berries to darker blackcurrants, while the palate possesses power and structure in the form of powdery tannins and mouthwatering minerality. Drink 2025-2035
Gevrey Chambertin Cuvée Edmond
£375.00 per 6 bottles IB
Named for Fabien’s grandfather Edmond, who was such a driving force behind the domaine. This is the only cuvée at the domaine to be 100% whole bunch fermented, respecting the traditions of the past. Full of spice and wild alpine fruits, a very perfumed wine, held together by its healthy tannic structure. Great persistence, this will age extremely well.
Drink 2027-2047
Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Poissenot
£560.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
Named after a medieval fishpond, Poissenot is a continuation of La Romanée, where the soil’s high stone content gives the wine its layered, mineral style. Vibrant and bright on the nose, there is a rhythmic to and fro between pure blackberry fruit and more herbal and liquorice-laced notes. The tannins are powdery, yet the palate still packs a punch, where the energy and finesse of a Premier Cru become more apparent. This is a chiselled Poissenot that is already in a great place. Drink 2026-2038
Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Plantes
£630.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
It’s not every year that we have the privilege of tasting this fine Premier Cru, which hails from a smaller, lesser-known site alongside Charmes. Happily, we were given access to this fabled Chambolle Musigny, which won’t remain unheard-of for much longer. With pronounced aromatics of blackberries, charred oak, and dried sage, the palate has even more sweetness of fruit, where a bramble-blackcurrant play off enraptures the palate before giving way to warming oak spice. The star of the Geantet Pansiot troupe. Drink 2025-2042
Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru
£480.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
Geantet Pansiot’s flagship cuvée, the family have a generous 0.45 hectares of this great Grand Cru. A true Charmes Chambertin in every sense, this is an intensely aromatic wine, where the fruit is rocked back and forth by notes of cloves, rosemary, and a subtle hint of orange peel. The palate is beautifully textured, with silken tannins that encourage the black fruit and sour cherry notes to speak up on the finish. Simply superb. Drink 2025-2042
DOMAINE DROUHIN LAROZE |
GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN
Founded in 1850, this sizeable domaine of 12 hectares is now in the hands of the fifth and sixth generations, parents Christine and Philippe, and children Caroline and Nicolas. They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four Premiers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War. Such was their skill, even back then, these cellars maintain the perfect temperatures for the Domaine’s policy of two-year élevage in cask.
Tasting with Caroline, she made it very clear how important the work in the vineyard was to really succeed in 2023. The temptation when you see such abundant and generous fruit is to take your eye off the ball and this was a year where fastidious attention to detail was paramount. Whilst a lot of work, Nicolas and his team did not just one but two green harvests: the first in mid-July and the second on 20th August, to guarantee optimum ripeness of such a potentially large crop. Even at harvest time (6th-18th September) as the temperatures rose, they additionally removed any berries that showed signs of heat stress. Arriving at the winery the bunches were left to cool overnight so that the maceration process could start evenly with all the berries at an equal temperature giving the winemaking team maximum control over the process. All these small points have made the difference between average and exceptional quality in the Côte de Nuits.
Gevrey Chambertin Dix Climats
£270.00 per 6 bottles IB
Four hectares of village Gevrey Chambertin in ten different locations is a sizeable parcel and, as a result, this cuvée is a superb example of this famous Côte de Nuits appellation. An array of dark spice and cocoa bean, this is a Gevrey which exudes confidence. Sweet dark berry flavours, with a sense of structure and depth. This is broad and rich on the palate and finishes on a touch of bitter orange. Excellent appellational style. Drink 2027-2038
Gevrey Chambertin En Champs
£340.00 per 6 bottles IB
This is a fine vineyard, with its 60-year-old vines sitting just below Premier Cru Champeaux on the northern edge of the village. Whilst a proportion goes into the Dix Climats, Nicolas vinifies and bottles the finest plots separately and gives the wine a 30% new oak elevage to support the weight of fruit. A combination of smoky black forest fruits and whole bunch vinification scent. The initial attack is quite tight and controlled, as is so often the case with this cuvée, it evolves on the palate and shows all the potential to be a very high-class wine, with bottle age. Drink 2028-2040
Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Au Closeau
£450.00 per 6 bottles IB
The smallest of Gevrey’s Premiers Crus at just 0.58 ha, of which the domaine owns 80%, sitting in an enviable place just below Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin. A fresh and crunchy style, pomegranate and red currants. A tightly composed glass, with a taut tannic personality sitting above the parapet in the mid palate, however everything integrates perfectly on the finish, with intensity and longevity. Drink 2028-2040.
Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Craipillots
£450.00 per 6 bottles IB
The name Craipillots is a reference to the stony soils in the vineyard, which surely have an influence on the very mineral nature of this wine. Full of brightness and energy, with characters of cranberry and wild alpine strawberry (25% whole bunch). This is very serious in nature, direct in its linear structure and the most thought provoking of the Premiers Crus, with its long, complex finish. Requires time but will be a superb classic Pinot. Drink 2028 -2044
Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Prieur
£460.00 per 6 bottles IB
This Premier Cru owes its name to the Prior of the Abbaye de Cluny. The monastery which historically owned all the great Gevrey Chambertin vineyards, and this was a favourite plot with the Prior at that time. A sweet and generous wine with nutmeg and tarragon undertones preceding an array of wild blackberry fruit. Very long and deliciously succulent on the finish. Drink 2028-2042
Latricières Chambertin Grand Cru
£930.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
A very old vine parcel, planted by Nicolas and Caroline’s grandfather in the 1960’s. In 2023 they only used 10% whole cluster as these aged vines naturally give fruit with small berries that are high in concentration. Aromatics of elderberry, Morello cherry and wood fire scent. An easy warmth and generosity of fruit, densely concentrated and a fine, long lingering finish. Drink 2028 -2049
Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru
£930.00 per 6 bottles IB
The Drouhin Laroze plot is one of the very best in this appellation, named after the place of worship, just below Chambertin Clos de Bèze. A proportion of whole bunch vinification with the substance to cope with 80% new oak gives both extravagance and personality to the wine. The lifting “croquant” cranberry characters combine seamlessly with the mocha and freshly roasted coffee bean perfume. On the palate this is both full and compact thanks to the high proportion of clay in the soil which gives the wine a seriousness and sense of aristocratic confidence. Very long, with a lasting sensation of sweetness and alpine fruits. A rising star in the Grand Cru hierarchy. Drink 2027-2045
Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru
£970.00 per 6 bottles IB
Lying at the top of the Clos just below the Château, in a parcel called “des Papes” reputedly reserved for the Popes of Avignon, the Drouhin Laroze hectare of vines is one of the very best positioned in Clos de Vougeot. The quality found here supports 80% new oak élevage, but with the Clos’ abundant natural power, Nicolas prefers to destalk the fruit 100%. An array of spice, cinnamon and clove intermingles with some juicy dark Morello cherry flavours. The initial impression is of sweetness and openness, highlighting the vintage’s warmth, but then the Clos’ brooding muscle builds and takes control. A very serious wine supporting the Clos’ reputation for making one of the Côte d’Or’s most powerful and longest-ageing Grands Crus. Drink 2029-2050
Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
£1,170.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
The family holding is a substantial 1.5 hectares in a wonderful location within the Chambolle Musigny sector of the appellation. Said to be named after a trinity of Roman goddesses of fertility, “bonnes mères”, the white marl soil here produces a generous and full style of wine. Nicolas’ wine making philosophy for this cuvée of 20% whole bunch vinification and 75% new oak enhances all the seductive richness that is so much this Chambollesque Grand Cru’s personality. Wild hedgerow fruits bouquet. It is so full and juicy in the mouth, ample with a fine powdery tannic texture. The finish is hugely pleasurable, packed with succulent dark berry fruit, and an underlying freshness keeps everything in perfect balance. Drink 2027-2045
Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
£1,195.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
This great Grand Cru was a favourite of the monks of Cluny in the early days of classification. The Drouhin Laroze 1.5 hectares are particularly important; planted in 1949 they are over 70 years old and produce fruit of exceptional quality and intensity. This beautiful 2023 highlights why for many this is their favourite Grand Cru, with its silky grace and delicious volume. A multitude of dark berry and Black Forest gateau flavours, laced with violet and allspice. Such a graceful wine, with instant appeal. It will require huge willpower not to drink too early, before its absolute prime. A total joy! Drink 2027-2050
Musigny Grand Cru Drouhin Laroze
£530.00 per single bottle IB
(On Allocation)
This flagship Grand Cru is a relatively recent acquisition by the domaine, having been purchased in 1986 and is most perfectly situated in the finest of the great lieux dits, Le Musigny itself. Blueberry and blackberry and apple crumble notes. An ethereal and joyous wine in its initial attack, which carefully builds with poise and class. The tannins are lacelike in their silkiness, the wine is so assured, poised and subtle. Luscious and plush this reaches heights of brilliance that few can equal this vintage. Pure quality. Drink 2028-2050
DOMAINE TORTOCHOT | GEVREY CHAMBERTIN
The Tortochot family have been respected vignerons in Gevrey Chambertin since the 19th century, but in recent times under the stewardship of Chantal Tortochot a notable transition has taken place. After 15 years of working in the oil industry, Chantal moved back to the estate to convert it from being a supplier of fine quality fruit to the négociant house Joseph Drouhin, to creating her own family domaine. In 2008 she made the next step by converting her 12 hectares to become fully organic. Since then, the domaine has never looked back and is today recognised as one of the finest sources for wines from Gevrey Chambertin and neighbouring communes.
In my 2023 tasting book, there is a scribbled aside as I hit the Premier Cru Champeaux: “Are these the best wines that Chantal has ever made?” Whilst she has made other extremely good wines, these 2023s are a sensational range, with each one performing in the glass when we tasted in November. It was a total pleasure to be in her cellars. There is nothing complicated in her philosophy, she follows the seasons carefully and, in her book, there were three important “episodes” in 2023: July managing the mildew pressure, August taking into consideration a green harvest, and September allowing the bunches to benefit from the mini harvest heatwave whilst protecting them from getting sunburnt and spoilt. Winemaking is simple and traditional, rightly or wrongly avoiding new wave fashions of amphora and the like. In her view, oak is the lifeblood for a wine in its youth, a steady supply of oxygen allowing the wines to evolve. This is Burgundy: every grower has their own view of how best to make their wines, and tasting the 2023s at Domaine Tortochot we definitely can’t question Chantal’s chosen route.
Morey St Denis
£215.00 per 6 bottles IB
This cuvée comes from three separate lieux dits on the lower slopes of Morey St Denis: Aux Chesseaux, Clos des Ormes and Les Crais. Chantal always likes to bottle this cuvée early to preserve fruit purity which is her priority to show off the quality of the commune. Open and easy red cherry Pinot fragrance, with a smidgeon of cinnamon. It flows gracefully across the tongue, with a delicate tannic core. So pure and wonderfully charming. Drink 2026-2037
Gevrey-Chambertin Champerrier Vieilles Vignes
£255.00 per 6 bottles IB
From a selection of 100-year-old vines planted by Felix Tortochot in 1920 at the bottom of Côte St Jacques, this cuvée is a very rewarding example of village Gevrey. Gamey with a wild fruit personality, excellent breadth and volume. A lavish and full style, kept carefully in control with its fine sandy tannic fabric and wonderful old-vine length that surpasses its classification. Drink 2027-2038
Morey St Denis Cuvée Renaissance
£345.00 per 6 bottles IB
This is a particularly special cuvée of Morey St Denis for Chantal, named for its return to the domaine after 36 years on a leasehold her father set up with a neighbour in Morey St Denis. It is a beautiful expression of Morey St Denis, which in itself is an appellation reborn. Sweet tayberry and loganberry flavours, a sumptuous and juicy style, highlighting the sweetness of fruit in 2023. Persistent and very graceful to the finish. Drink 2027-2038
Morey St Denis 1er Cru Aux Charmes
£360.00 per 6 bottles IB
Morey St Denis’s Premier Cru Aux Charmes adjoins Mazoyères Grand Cru. Legend has it that if it had fallen within the more powerful parish of Gevrey Chambertin, it would have been classified as a Grand Cru. With wild autumnal fruit flavours, there is a balance between ample fruit and a controlled core of minerality, with a long, lifting bitter cherry freshness on the finish. Drink 2027-2042
Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux
£375.00 per 6 bottles IB
A well-positioned Premier Cru on the northern border of the commune alongside Brochon. The vineyard’s clay soil gives a depth of fruit that allows Chantal to age this cuvée in 50% new oak, which it amply supports. It combines gentle, subtle bilberry flavours, with a fullness and breadth in its composition. A very composed and classy Premier Cru. Drink 2027–2042
Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St Jacques
£410.00 per 6 bottles IB
Lavaux St Jacques is one of Gevrey’s highest vineyards, renowned for making wines of great elegance. The cooling high altitude is offset by its southerly exposure, and the benefits always shine through in this excellent cuvée. The immediate sensation is of the warmth of the location and vintage, with abundant dark berry fruit flavours and hints of spicy oak. The finish highlights the benefits of its location, the cooling nights giving a refreshing lift and precision. Drink 2027-2045

Chantal was delighted to have made seven barrels in 2023, but prepare yourselves for just 300 bottles in 2024! A lavish scent of blackberry fool and vanilla pod flows through to the palate. Beautifully composed and poised, this is extremely intense with a long purposeful finish. A wine of infinite stature, true to its prestige and classification. Drink 2028-2049
DOMAINE SERAFIN PERE & FILS |
GEVREY CHAMBERTIN
The domaine continues under the name of Christian Serafin and his father but has been run for some years by Christian’s daughter Karine and his niece Frédérique Goulley. The two cousins continue his mantra of exceptionally hard work in the vineyards, “without good fruit, you can never make great wine.” The domaine has a fine selection of very old vines, which Frédérique destems 100%, remaining committed to Christian’s philosophy of 100% new oak for the main cuvées. She says it is the domaine’s signature. They work with two coopers, Taransaud and François Frères, and past vintages show that this approach makes wines with a fine ability to age.
Vineyard work is much the same as in Christian’s time: a late pruning policy, delayed for as long as possible after the new year, to give the vines an extended dormancy period after the stresses of the previous year’s harvest. This defers budding, thereby reducing the risk of a spring frost and encourages a later flowering. Generally speaking, 2023 was an easy year at the domaine; the swift harvest and health of their soils meant that they retained excellent acidity levels in their wines.
Bourgogne Rouge
£175.00 per 6 bottles IB
Crafted using 50/50 new and one-year-old barrels, this is an archetypal entry-level Pinot Noir from one of Gevrey’s finest estates. The new oak lends a subtle charred note and delicate nutmeg spice to an otherwise red berry focused wine, which will offer joyous drinking right from the off. Drink 2024-2028
Gevrey Chambertin
£255.00 per 6 bottles IB
For this superb appellational cuvée, Karine and Frédérique have a policy of destemming all the bunches in order to accentuate the wine’s clarity of fruit. Due to the warmth of the vintage, a slightly higher proportion of new oak was used for this wine, yet it has not lost any of its purity and elegance. With red berry and cherry sweetness on the nose, there is a darker edge to the palate, where the tannins add structure and power as they chaperone the fruit to the finish. Drink 2026-2035
Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes
£310.00 per 6 bottles IB
If one wine were to embody the viticultural philosophy at Domaine Serafin, then this would be it. Made from two separate plots, which are home to vines aged from 70 to well over 100 years old, there is tremendous concentration of fruit here, with notes of cranberry, loganberry, and toasted oak coming to the fore. Meanwhile, the palate possesses a darker side where the fine-grained tannins are indicative of the wine’s ageing potential. A true representation of Gevrey Chambertin. Drink 2028-2040
Morey St Denis 1er Cru Les Millandes
£425.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
A number of famous domaines have holdings in Les Millandes, a highly-regarded site which lies just below Clos de la Roche Grand Cru. Expressive on the nose, with notes of pomegranate, summer fruits, and a subtle hint of ground coffee, the palate is equally charming with a sweetness of fruit that oscillates between red and black fruit. There is power here as the tannins give structure before finishing with a very pleasing bite of crunchy cranberry.
Drink 2026-2038
Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux
£450.00 per 6 bottles IB
The walled Corbeaux vineyard lies in a small dip beside Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru and is famed for producing wines of finesse, which are always very affable in their youth. This year is no different, displaying aromatics of red berry fruit and delicate charred oak, while the palate has an irresistible tart cherry note that presents the perfect foil for the wine’s fine-grained tannins. Meaning ‘the crows’, Les Corbeaux was a cemetery in the Middle Ages home to a murder of these birds, but now the site produces wines that are full of life. Drink 2027-2040
Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Fonteny
£560.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
The east-west aspect of Fonteny means that the vineyard receives sunshine exposure throughout the day, resulting in wines which are always packed to the brim with fruit. Pure and defined on the nose, there are notes of bright redcurrant and cranberry fruit, interspersed with sweet smoke and nutmeg spice that make this such a moreish wine. This can often be powerful, but the 2023 shows an elegance and approachability even at this early stage. Drink 2026-2038
Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes
£610.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
With a similar soil make up to that of nearby Bonnes Mares, the superb Baudes site produces wines which are comparable to its Grand Cru neighbour. Serafin are famed for their firmer style of Chambolle where weight and depth of flavour are the order of the day. In 2023, there is a wonderful concentration of fruit both on the nose and palate, while the wine’s natural power is tempered by silk-soft tannins and mouthwatering freshness on the finish. This is already so attractive. Drink 2028-2042
Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Cazetiers
£720.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
Arguably one of Gevrey’s most esteemed Premiers Crus sites, the wines of Cazetiers are renowned for their elegance and complexity. Serafin’s rendition is darker than its peers, but still possesses the aromatic intensity and sweetness of fruit that has come to define this vineyard. The palate is expressive, offering wild black fruit and sweet vanilla, while the gentle tannins and judicious oak management are beautifully expressed on the palate. Drink 2027-2040
Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru
£585.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
The Sérafins own a third of a hectare of this magnificent Grand Cru and have once again produced a wine with substance and depth. Already so eloquent even at this early stage, the nose displays bright aromatics of cranberries and blackberry fruit. This sweetness is echoed on the palate, where fine-grained tannins add structure before melting away to reveal further layers of complexity. This has all the components to be a great Grand Cru. Drink 2028-2045
DOMAINE LOUIS BOILLOT |
GEVREY CHAMBERTIN
Louis’s 29-year-old son, Clément, is now firmly in charge of both this domaine and his mother, Ghislaine Barthod’s, estate in Chambolle Musigny. Come the harvest, he’s a very busy vigneron indeed! Clément is steadfast in continuing the domaine’s pursuit of pure, unadorned fruit characters. To this end, he destalks all the fruit and undertakes a light, cool maceration in advance of the alcoholic fermentation. Since 2020, he has also introduced 500-litre barrels for certain cuvées to reduce the oak impact on the final wines.
In many ways, the 2023 vintage is perfectly suited to Boillot’s house style; this is a vintage of vibrant, ripe fruit and vivacious freshness that needs a gentle touch, rather than winemaking bells and whistles. True to the domaine’s philosophy, which places pure fruit front and centre, the 2023s have already been racked to tank where they will remain for a further twelve months before bottling. This élevage in stainless steel, rather than in barrel, has been chosen specifically to preserve the bright fruit characters and singing freshness of the vintage.
Gevrey Chambertin
£240.00 per 6 bottles IB
Made with the fruit from eight different parcels across the village of Gevrey, this cuvée benefits from a multitude of individual terroirs and as such provides a great snapshot of the village style. A charming nose of pretty redcurrant and red cherry fruit is given further depth by a delicate hint of violet and a twist of white pepper. The ripe, plush core of sweet summer berry fruit is sustained by a vibrant thread of acidity that brings energy and tension to the palate. Soft, silky tannins provide a deceptively gentle structure; there is a density here that will support time in bottle. Drink 2026-2036
Chambolle Musigny
£276.00 per 6 bottles IB
This cuvée contains fruit from three separate parcels of vines within Chambolle and expresses all the charm and finesse of the village. The fragrant and inviting nose delivers bright notes of red cherries, sun-warmed raspberries and a hint of cherry stone bitterness. A rounded, supple core of ripe, red-toned fruit is enlivened by a line of fresh, blood orange acidity and shaped by fine-grained tannins that bring a very slight chalkiness to the finish. The overall impression is one of carefully judged balance and finesse. Drink 2026-2035
Gevrey Chambertin Les Evocelles
£312.00 per 6 bottles IB
The steep, stony vineyard of Les Evocelles is located at the very north-western edge of Gevrey, at an altitude of between 320-380m above sea level, resulting in a cooler microclimate. The plots of vines owned by the domaine are at the very top of the hill, where limestone dominates the subsoils. The 2023 is a delightfully expressive wine with ripe notes of Morello cherry, raspberry coulis, bitter almond and a hint of white pepper spice. Plush fruit sits around lively, mineral-driven acidity, which delivers a covert touch of salinity to the wine’s core. Fine, sleek tannins encase the whole, leading to a moreish, elegant finish. Drink 2026-2040
Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets
£204.00 per 3 bottles IB
As a Premier Cru, Les Champonnets enjoys an enviable position, sitting between Gevrey’s Grands Crus and the lower slopes of Combe St Jacques. Boillot’s vines here are north facing and enjoy the cool breeze that flows down from the nearby valley. As such, this cuvée always exhibits a vibrant freshness and the 2023 is no exception. Showing bright notes of redcurrant and pomegranate, the nose is given further depth by a savoury whisp of white pepper. Ripe, succulent fruit is enlivened by sprightly, mouth-watering acidity whilst silken, yet structured tannins provide shape and poise. Finishing with a lift of pepper spice, this is a highly attractive wine that speaks of its place. Drink 2027-2040
DOMAINE DE L'ARLOT | NUITS ST GEORGES
Domaine de l’Arlot has been owned by AXA Millésimes since 1987 and is currently under the direction of Englishman Christian Seely, who also has responsibility for their Bordeaux estates Ch Pichon Baron in Pauillac, Ch Suduiraut in Sauternes and Port house, Quinta do Noval. In 2014 he appointed winemaker Geraldine Godot as Technical Director to manage this fine 14-hectare estate, which includes two famous monopole vineyards on the southern-most boundary of the Côte de Nuits; Clos de l’Arlot and Clos des Forêts St Georges.
Geraldine has overseen the final conversion of all the domaine’s vineyards to biodynamic practices. She is committed to the view that healthy land and a healthy environment are paramount for making the very best wines, with terroir identity at their heart. The domaine has a reputation for making wines using whole bunch vinification techniques. Geraldine has been reviewing this practice over the past few years, in the context of a warmer set of vintages where preservation of acidity is key. In 2023, she made the decision to destem every cuvée, with the exception of the Romanée Saint Vivant, and achieved incredibly pure aromatics as a result.
Côte de Nuits Villages Blanc Au Leurey
£175.00 per 6 bottles IB
Lieu dit Au Leurey has a northerly exposure and lies immediately over the road from the winery’s eponymous monopole vineyard. The Arlot rows here are only planted to Chardonnay. The 2023 is a poised and fresh white with aromas of confit lemon, grapefruit and just-ripe yellow plums. Refined and delicately fashioned, there is a creamy texture to the mid-palate, with refreshing acidity and a light hint of bitter almond on the finish.
Drink 2025 – 2030.
Nuits St Georges Blanc 1er Cru Clos de l’Arlot
£520.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
A walled monopole, Clos de l’Arlot spans a total of 4 hectares and the steep slope in the middle section of the vineyard is planted to whites; Chardonnay with a tiny percentage of Pinot Beurot. With an aromatic and highly perfumed nose, this wine is immediately arresting, its beguiling notes of jasmine, lemon curd, grapefruit zest and lightly toasted hazelnuts demanding close attention. There is a generous volume of fruit at the core, buttressed by a Chablis-esque, flinty acidity and wet stone minerality. Long, bright and vivacious, this wine will undoubtedly develop beautifully in the cellar. Drink 2025 – 2030
Côtes de Nuits Villages Clos du Chapeau
£165.00 per 6 bottles IB
Between Nuits St Georges and Ladoix Serrigny, lies another of the domaine’s monopole vineyards, Clos du Chapeau, which is said, rather poetically, to resemble a top hat. Lifted white pepper and nutmeg spice sit alongside pretty aromas of ripe red cherry and cranberry. With pure, bright and poised red fruit on the palate, soft, fine-grained tannins and crunchy acidity, this is an attractive cuvée with immediate appeal.
Drink 2026 – 2032
Nuits St Georges 1er Cru
Cuvée Mont des Oiseaux
£340.00 per 6 bottles IB
Originally known as Petit Arlot, with the grapes coming from young vines within the Clos de l’Arlot, this cuvée was renamed Mont des Oiseaux when the vines had reached the maturity to reflect their Premier Cru status. In a further twist, 2023 may be the last vintage of Mont des Oiseaux as the tiny 2024 crop will be blended into Clos de l’Arlot itself and the domaine are contemplating making this a permanent change. This vintage has an engaging nose of Morello cherry compote and pomegranate, with hints of nutmeg and bitter cocoa nibs. There is lovely fruit sweetness upfront, with a pure line of blood orange acidity running through the core and suave, elegant, mouth-coating tannins. Effortlessly poised. Drink 2026 – 2035
Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Clos de l'Arlot
£455.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
The dramatic topography of this walled, monopole vineyard is due partly to a natural fault line and partly to historic quarrying. The soils here are a mixture of marl, limestone and white oolite, giving an intricate, nuanced complexity to this Pinot Noir. The 2023 beguiles with a lifted, highly fragrant nose filled with cranberries, wild strawberries, pomegranates and a twist of dried wild herbs. Ethereal, pure red berry fruit flows effortlessly across the palate, supported by tannins that are gauzy, finely spun and impressively refined. Yet, beneath this graceful and understated façade there is the depth, complexity and power of a high-class red Burgundy. Drink 2026 – 2055
Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forêts St Georges
£455.00 per 6 bottles IB
£475.00 per 3 magnums IB
(On Allocation)
Domaine de l’Arlot is 15 hectares in total and their largest monopole, Clos des Forêts St Georges, accounts for an impressive 7.2 hectares. Alongside Les St Georges, which sits immediately to the north, Clos des Forêts is considered by many to merit Grand Cru status. Sometimes a little shy when young, the 2023 is atypically forthcoming with an exuberant, open nose exhibiting notes of bright red cherry, grenadine, baked earth and light nutmeg spice. Whilst the palate is weighty, with a muscular tannic structure in evidence, the vibrant acidity, chalky minerality and layered, complex finish ensures an exquisite harmony and balance.
Drink 2027 – 2050
Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots
£950.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
Nestled between the Grands Crus of Romanée St Vivant, Echézeaux and Richebourg, it is no surprise that Les Suchots is highly acclaimed. An aromatic and perfumed wine, the 2023 is redolent with scents of Morello cherry, blood orange, pomegranate and just a hint of mineral-laden smoke. With a plush, satisfying core of ripe berry fruit, the tannins here are broad and overt, yet do not overwhelm. A line of fresh acidity brings a vibrancy to the finish, which sings with fruit sweetness. More approachable in youth than the 2022, this is nonetheless a wine with great capacity to age. Drink 2027 – 2055
Romanée St Vivant Grand Cru
£575.00 per single bottle IB
(On Allocation)
The Arlot parcel of Romanée St Vivant is as fine as it gets, sitting directly below the great Romanée Conti, with just a 10-foot lane separating them. The 2023 is a superb, highly seductive Pinot that’s almost impossible not to love. Vibrant notes of red cherry fruit, pomegranate and cranberry are seasoned with subtle whisps of woody herbs, nutmeg and mineral-laden smoke. Densely concentrated and almost revelling in fruit sweetness, the palate is powerful but suave, supported by finely woven, silky tannins and elegant, blood orange acidity. Complex flavours continue to build subtly throughout the long finish, giving a wonderfully complete wine that’s at once vivacious and poised. Drink 2027 – 2055
DOMAINE TRUCHETET | NUITS ST GEORGES
Morgan Truchetet, alongside his wife Pauline and his sister Julie, took over the running of the 6-hectare family domaine in 2019. It is thanks to Pauline that we discovered these wines and introduced them to our portfolio two years ago; she has been a close friend for many years, first during her time working at Domaine de l’Arlot and then assisting Bruno Colin in Chassagne Montrachet. The estate wines are mostly focused around Nuits St Georges, with two wines from Pauline’s grandparents’ estate in the Côte de Beaune introduced from the 2022 vintage. Morgan also supplements the range by buying in fruit to vinify under a negociant label for appellations where they don’t own vineyards. For these, he follows the same quality criteria and ideals as for the domaine.
2020 saw the conversion to full organic practices. In conjunction with this, the Truchetets are transforming their vineyards by adjusting the trellising and pruning methods to adapt to climate change. Their aim is to maximise photosynthesis, but also protect the bunches by creating leaf shade during the hotter summer conditions. In 2023, leaf shading proved vital as there was a late season heatwave just before harvest. Knowing the grapes were sheltered from the fierce heat, the winemaking team held their nerve and waited for temperatures to settle before beginning a 9-day long harvest on the 13th September. Exhibiting perfect fruit ripeness, the Truchetet 2023s certainly benefitted from this highly considered and conscientious viticultural approach.
Bourgogne Blanc Hautes Côtes de Nuits La Montagne

DOMAINE FRANCOIS LEGROS |
NUITS ST GEORGES
Domaine Legros spans 6.5 hectares, covering appellations in Nuits St Georges, Chambolle Musigny and Morey St Denis. It is the epitome of a family holding: winemaker François took on the vineyards from his parents and uncle at the end of the 1980s and in 1999 he acquired yet more vines from his father-in-law. The latest chapter sees François joined by his two daughters, Charlotte, a graduate of the Lycée Viticole de Beaune who manages the vineyard, and Laure, who looks after the commercial side of the business.
Charlotte and Laure have implemented new ideas and approaches, such as a new sorting table that allowed for bunch-by-bunch selection during the 2023 harvest. They are equally happy to retain highly traditional methods if these will give a better outcome in the glass. For example, they work the highly fragile vines of their oldest vineyard sites by hand to prevent damage and preserve soil health. This really is a domaine where two generations are working in harmony together, resulting in an impressive range of classy, yet understated Côtes de Nuits.
St Aubin 1er Cru Murgers Dents de Chien
£198.00 per 6 bottles IB
Situated to the south of the St Aubin appellation and bordering two Puligny Montrachet Premiers Crus, the south-west facing Dents de Chien vineyards are highly prized. After twelve months of careful élévage, this is an exuberant white with a beguiling nose of confit lemon, succulent apricots and just a hint of toasted hazelnuts. Whilst rich and weighty, the vibrancy and freshness at the wine’s core ensures this is a highly poised Chardonnay. Drink 2025 – 2030
Chambolle Musigny Vieilles Vignes
£215.00 per 6 bottles IB
The vines for this cuvée, which are between 60 and 80 years old, produce very small, highly concentrated berries. The team employ kid-glove treatment in both the vineyard, where the vines have to be worked mostly by hand to protect the veteran ‘pieds’, and the winery. This approach produces a wonderfully expressive and pretty wine packed with scents of grenadine, ripe red cherries and wild violets. There’s a lovely depth and volume of fruit here, with rounded tannins that add a slight chalky grip to the finish. Eminently charming, but with potential to unfurl further with age. Drink 2025 – 2035
Nuits St Georges

With fine-grained, supple tannins and excellent depth, this is already a very complete Pinot. Drink 2026 – 2038
DOMAINE FAIVELEY | NUITS ST GEORGES
The Faiveley family have a long history in Nuits St Georges dating back to 1825. From this time, they have been one of the most influential names in the Côte d’Or. The estate is now run by the seventh generation, brother and sister Erwan and Eve. Each generation has had a significant impact on the family business, acquiring land and developing their wines. Today the family own an extraordinary 120 hectares, from Domaine Billaud-Simon in Chablis through the Côte d’Or and down into the Côte Chalonnaise, including an impressive 27 hectares of Premiers Crus and 12 hectares of Grands Crus. Since taking over, Eve and Erwan have overseen the purchase of two domaines in the Côte de Beaune, including a parcel of Grand Cru Bienvenues and Bâtard Montrachet, as well as vineyards in Volnay and Pommard, and a further 20 hectares in Gevrey Chambertin, including Grand Cru Charmes Chambertin.
The cathedral-styled winemaking facilities in the heart of Nuits St Georges sit above some of the most extensive 18th century cellars in the Côte d’Or, providing the space to make wines with extraordinary attention to detail. Since Erwan took the reins, the Faiveley style has become finer and more restrained, with a deftness of touch not uniformly seen in his father François’ time. Further changes are underway in the vineyards, and 2023 was the second growing season to be managed according to fully organic practices. Faiveley anticipate obtaining their organic certification for the 2025 vintage.

Chambolle Musigny Joseph Faiveley
£612.00 per 12 bottles IB
(Not tasted.) A blend of three different parcels of vineyards within the appellation of Chambolle Musigny. Whilst a negoce contract, the Faiveley team do all the vineyard work to their own specifications to produce a classical Chambolle, with charm and silky grace. Drink 2026-2027
Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Les Porets St George
£396.00 per 6 Bottles IB
(On Allocation)
Located to the south of the town of Nuits St Georges, Les Porets was historically used to grow pear trees, but its relatively deep and gravelly soils have long since proven much more suited to vines. Erwan Faiveley considers this site as the perfect meeting of the Côtes de Beaune and Nuits styles. Initial notes of liquorice root and wild herbs give way to aromas of redcurrant and wild strawberry. Energetic and lively red fruit characters are underpinned by tannins that retain a firm, chalky grip, which will undoubtedly mellow with time. Drink 2026- 2038
Nuits St Georges Les Damodes
£456.00 per 6 bottles IB
One of the Nuits’ most northerly climats, Les Damodes sits on the high slopes adjoining Vosne Romanée and alongside the highly esteemed Premier Cru Malconsorts. The stony soils and raised altitude of this vineyard, which is 250m above sea level, make themselves known through bright cranberry and raspberry toned fruit, vibrant acidity and quivering tension in the mid-palate. Although vibrant and fresh, the wine has silky tannins and enough breadth to support gentle cellar ageing. Drink 2026-2038
Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Beaux Bruns
£516.00 per 6 bottles IB
Sitting on one of the lower slopes within Chambolle Musigny, the Premier Cru status of Les Beaux Bruns is, in large part, due to the alluvial deposits from the Combe de Chambolle. This cuvée is a blend of three different parcels and, although a négoce wine, all of the fruit comes from one grower who works to the exact specifications of the Faiveley team. The 2023 shows bright, vivacious notes of redcurrant and wild strawberry, with a delicate touch of sun-dried oregano. The palate is filled with crunchy, juicy red fruit and the chalky grip from the tannins brings sappy texture that’s lively, energetic and enjoyable. Drink 2026-2038
Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru La Combe aux Moines
£534.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
The Combe aux Moines has a long and complex history, with vines planted here perhaps as long ago as the 7th Century. The modern-day vineyard benefits from a steep, east-facing slope (part of the highly regarded Côte St Jacques) and quarry walls that form a heat-retaining amphitheatre. This means that grapes from this Premier Cru reliably achieve full ripeness and the 2023 is no exception; the nose is a hedonistic cornucopia of sun-ripened raspberry fruit, grenadine, and Morello cherries, seasoned with hints of dried wild herbs and cocoa nibs. Generous, lush and laden with sweet red fruit characters, this is a confident wine with joyful acidity and ripe, mouthcoating tannins. Already a delight. Drink 2027-2045
Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St Jacques
£618.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
Whilst south facing, the Faiveley parcel of this higher altitude Premier Cru also receives a fairly constant stream of cool air from the Combe de Lavaux. As such, grapes grown here exhibit an excellent balance between fruit exuberance and freshness. With bright aromas of redcurrant, pomegranate and red cherry on the nose, the first impression is of fresh, crunchy Pinot fruit. The profile then broadens out on the palate to show ripe, rounded Morello cherry with a whisp of savoury smoke and a light dusting of bitter cocoa. Fine-grained, sweet tannins and lifted acidity bring the wine to a satisfying close. Drink 2027-2040
Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers
£636.00 per 6 bottles IB
Located on a steep slope of the Côte St Jacques, between 300m and 360m above sea level, this eastern-facing vineyard is considered amongst the elite of Gevrey Premiers Crus. Cazetiers is also a flagship for Faiveley, with the family owning just over half of the 8-hectare Premier Cru. As such, vines for this cuvée are planted on all four of the distinct geological bands that run through the vineyard and the resulting wine is a terrific expression of the overall terroir. The 2023 is currently a little shy on the nose, with savoury notes of wild herbs and restrained, red-toned fruit. The tightly wound palate, with its concentrated grenadine characters, energetic acidity and structured, muscular tannin, is certainly built for the long-term. A classy wine that will unfurl with as yet unseen complexity over years to come. Drink 2028-2045
Chambolle Musigny Les Fuées
£672.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
(Not tasted.) One of Chambolle’s highest positioned Premiers Crus, with a very stony soil that produces very fine and mineral wines. Sadly though, they are going through a replanting programme at this exceptional vineyard, so they are currently only making 3 barrels before the next generation of young vines come through and make their mark. Drink 2027-2045
Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Les St Georges
£840.00 per 6 bottles IB
Regarded as the leading vineyard in Nuits, and certainly worthy of Grand Cru status, Les St Georges sits on brown clay soils that are peppered with small stones, ensuring good drainage. Faiveley own a quarter of a hectare in the south-east corner of the vineyard, and this is supplemented with fruit purchased from a vigneron with holdings at the northern end. Intense black cherry and forest fruit aromas are flecked with hints of violet and a wild-herb savouriness, giving immediate appeal. The palate is powerfully concentrated with seductive, polished tannins, blood orange acidity and a certain saline minerality. Complex notes of pepper and savoury smoke are revealed on the long, persistent finish. A wine to sip, savour and linger over. Drink 2028-2047
Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley Grand Cru
£1,158.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
This 3-hectare Grand Cru monopole has been in the Faiveley family since 1874 and, uniquely, has the Faiveley name attached to the appellation itself. Situated on a geological patchwork that includes deep red soils, limestone marl and nearly exposed limestone bedrock, this is the flagship vineyard for Faiveley and unerringly produces fabulous Pinot. With notes of white pepper, nutmeg, fresh red cherries, grenadine and wild raspberries, the 2023 is sprightly, bright and inviting. The concentrated, plush red fruit is seductive and beguiling, almost hiding the latent power of this wine. Silky, mouth-coating tannins and sustaining acidity carry through to a highly satisfying finish. Drink 2028-2055
Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru
£1,206.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
This cuvée is composed of three separate components, one of which is from bought-in fruit. The core of the wine, however, comes from the two Charmes plots owned by Domaine Faiveley; one on the Morey side of the vineyard, within Mazoyères, and the other below Le Chambertin. A lush expression of Pinot Noir, the 2023 is resplendent with notes of dark Morello cherry, pomegranate, black forest fruits and peppery, savoury smoke. On the palate, the wine is broad and concentrated with plush, velvety tannins and a vibrant line of uplifting acidity running through the whole. Already suave and moreish. Drink 2028-2052
Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru
£1,302.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
As a single, 50-hecatare vineyard, Clos de Vougeot commands a significant presence, accounting for just over three quarters of the total vineyard area within the village of Vougeot. Faiveley own 1.2 hectares of this Grand Cru, with their vines located in three different sections of the vineyard. Initially subdued, the 2023 takes time to reveal itself in the glass before showing aromas of vibrant red cherry, mocha oak and savoury, nutmeg spice. Concentrated and powerful, with a muscular, tannic structure, there is no mistaking the Grand Cru pedigree of this wine. Yet there is a deftness of touch that ensures a lingering charm on the long, peppery and silky finish. Drink 2026-2054
Echézeaux En Orveaux Grand Cru
£1,302.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
A lieu dit within Grand Cru Echézeaux, En Orveaux spans nearly a full hectare and has very little topsoil above the bedrock, making for a fine-boned, highly graceful style of Pinot Noir. This vintage has a perfumed, floral nose that sees red-toned fruit overlaid with beguiling notes of violet and peony. Lusciously ripe, but still shaped by a characteristic line of crystalline, mineral acidity, this is a very charming wine. Flavours of sun-ripened red cherry and pomegranate are enhanced by delicate hints of nutmeg and savoury smoke. Ripe, suave tannins add a supple, succulent texture to a finish that continues to build. Drink 2027-2048
Chambertin Clos de Beze
£2,322.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
With a viticultural history that stretches back some fourteen hundred years, Clos de Bèze is a warm vineyard site with fine, deep topsoil that is renowned for producing ripe, concentrated Pinots with considerable capacity for ageing. The 2023 sees an elegant expression of this terroir, with lifted notes of white pepper, sun-ripened raspberries and red cherries. The sweet core of ripe, rounded red fruit is supported by lively acidity, silky, fine-grained tannins and a chalky, stony grip on the finish. Long and poised, this is a wine full of verve and precision. Drink 2028-2050
