THE WINES OF THE CÔTE DE BEAUNE

The Côte de Beaune covers the 20 miles south of Nuits St Georges, from Aloxe Corton through Beaune to Chagny. It is most strongly associated with the great white wines of Corton Charlemagne, Puligny Montrachet and Chassagne Montrachet, but also produces some exceptional reds from the villages of Savigny lès Beaune, Pommard, Volnay, Beaune itself and less well known Maranges and Chorey Les Beaune.

The accepted norm for the white wines is that Meursault produces the fullest and creamiest wines, Puligny the purest, combining limestone minerality with honeyed florality, and the villages of Chassagne and St Aubin are more structured, leaning towards earthy terroir rusticity. These characteristics are arguably less apparent today, due to advancements in wine making and climatic changes, but they still in part remain true. The greatest stylistic influence though, as always, comes from the producer and their own preferred style of wine.

The Côte de Beaune’s red wines have historically been overshadowed by those from the Côte de Nuits. Today, this is not so much the case, as both the quality and individuality of each of the different villages’ wines become more and more appreciated. Surrounding the town of Beaune, wines under its name and Chorey produce fine and floral examples of Pinot Noir. In Savigny the wines are fuller with an earthier texture, whilst its neighbours’ wines from Pernand shine with mineral brightness. South of the town lies the Côte’s most famous red villages; Pommard a source of incredibly intense, long-lived wines, and Volnay, giving more charming wines sometimes likened to a cross between Vosne Romanée and Chambolle Musigny. More recently we have sought red wines from its most southern appellations in Maranges and Santenay, which, like Marsannay in the Côte de Nuits, are definitely worth seeking out.

THE 2023 VINTAGE

The stylish Pinot Noir characteristics seen in the Côte de Nuits are equally radiant in the vineyards of Beaune and its surrounds. The healthy crop this vintage has allowed appellational and terroir differences to shine through for both red and white wines. Thankfully, the Chardonnays were not impacted by the early April frost, and the variety’s ability to cope with more generous yields negated any impact from the heat at harvest time. The wines are defined by enticing yellow fruit flavours, and, whilst not as racy as years in the mould of the 2014 and 2017 vintages, all give a rewarding impression of fresh salinity.

LOUIS JADOT | BEAUNE

Historically better known as a negociant, Louis Jadot now own or manage the vast majority of the vineyards that go into their cuvées and sit comfortably alongside the very best domaines in the Côtes. Their range is one of the finest in the region and the brilliance of Frederic Barnier’s wine making offers a beautiful expression of this very exciting vintage. He describes his 2022s succinctly: “The whites have excellent ripeness, the noses very expressive with excellent levels of aromatic intensity”; and for the reds: “they have deep colours, the modest acidity throws emphasis on the silky texture of tannins and the wines are impressive with very good density”.

Following a welcome return to normal yields in 2022, 2023 was equally abundant both in terms of quantity and quality. Though Frederic notes that it was the first time in his career that the grapes were picked during a heatwave, he strongly believes that the quality of the reds are down to this early September warmth. We couldn’t agree more and despite being a sunny year, neither the red nor the white wines have the profile of a solar vintage, with alcohol levels half a degree lower than 2022 but with the same acidity.

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Chenevottes
£385.00 per 6 bottles IB

The fruit for this Premier Cru is sourced from a highly revered grower in the village of Chassagne. Chenevottes is a relatively cool site, resulting in a leaner, more delicate expression of Chassagne. Fresh lemon zest, quince, and toasted almonds can be found on the nose, while the palate has a delightful pithiness that balances the wine’s natural weight. Charming. Drink 2025-2035.

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts
£400.00 per 6 bottles IB

The lower lying vineyards of Les Referts has a reputation for fuller bodied Pulignys, and this is a delicious example of the site, with notes of apricots, nectarines, and vanilla adding to its charm. Not overly rich on the palate, it has a beautiful silken texture, with more stone fruit and citrus zest driving towards a refreshing finish. Drink 2025-2032.

Meursault 1er Cru Charmes
£430.00 per 6 bottles IB

Premier Cru Charmes always possesses a natural opulence with an affinity with oak, and the 2023 is no different. Partly vinified in foudres, the nose shows layers of complexity, with notes of lemon zest, orange peel, butter and toast. The palate is fresher and more saline than expected from a warm vintage, yet flavours of peach and apricot give an impression of breadth. A charming Charmes that will give immediate joy. Drink 2025-2032.

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières Domaine des Heritiers
£570.00 per 6 bottles IB

Folatières sits high on the slopes of Puligny Montrachet and is one of the appellation’s most famous Premiers Crus. This is so inviting right from the off, the nose is greeted by a show of lemon curd, orange zest, and brioche. The palate has beautiful textural weight, balanced by a zesty lick of grapefruit which keeps the wine feeling lively and fresh. Drink 2025-2034.

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de La Garenne Domaine de la Duc de Magenta
£570.00 per 6 bottles IB

The walled enclave of Clos de La Garenne is actually part of the larger lieu-dit of Champ Canet, which produces supple yet structured whites. The nose is delicately floral with notes of honeysuckle, and an accompanying Chantilly cream and white peach sweetness. The flavours on the palate build gradually towards an apex of oak-influenced toast and spice, before finishing with salted almonds and a touch of mouthwatering pineapple on the descent. Drink 2025-2038.

Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru Domaine des Héritiers
£600.00  per 3 bottles IB

This is a beautifully complex and intense Grand Cru, with aromatics that gravitate towards tropical fruit via golden kiwis and ripe nectarines. Silky and creamy, the palate possesses pitch-perfect accents of oak spice with a grip and tension that will ensure this will only get better with age. Drink 2026-2040.

Bienvenues Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru
£1,200.00 per 3 bottles IB

(Not tasted.) Bienvenues Montrachet sits solely within the commune of Puligny Montrachet, with an easterly exposure. The site produces wines which combine structured tension with volume and controlled precision.

Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru
£1,200.00 per 3 bottles IB

(Not tasted.) Bâtard-Montrachet is located at the point where villages of Puligny Montrachet and Chassagne Montrachet converge, sitting just below Le Montrachet. The most generous in style of all the Grands Crus, making wines with ample richness which impress from an early age.

Chevalier Montrachet Les Demoiselles Grand Cru Domaine des Héritiers
£1,600.00 per 3 bottles IB

(Not tasted.) Louis Jean Baptiste Jadot bought back this vineyard in 1913 from two sisters, naming it “Les demoiselles” in their honour. They inherited the vineyard from their grandfather, who bought it in 1845. The subsoil is very chalky, with a lot of stones. Always the most harmonious and graceful of the Côte de Beaune white Grands Crus, this is typically floral with a strong mineral identity.

Montrachet Grand Cru Louis Jadot
£2,400.00 per 3 bottles IB

(Not tasted.) Puligny and Chassagne’s most famous Grand Cru, with very well drained chalk and stony soils. This has the very best of all the other Grands Crus in one site. It combines bold confidence and richness of fruit with elements of tension and purity. This is always the wine with the greatest aging potential.

Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes
£305.00 per 6 bottles IB

(Not tasted.) The most sought after of Premiers Crus in Volnay, its higher location in the village creates a wine with a high degree of poise and strong Pinot purity. Always a long-term keeper.

Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules Domaine des Héritiers
£340.00 per 6 bottles IB

Louis Jadot purchased this Monopole in 1826 and remains the sole owner to this day. A flagship wine for the company, this is one of Beaune’s more elegant styles thanks to the vineyard’s stony terroir. The nose is expressive with raspberry and red cherry, while the palate shows a little more richness, with notes of mocha and cinnamon spice adding a more serious edge. With breadth and silk-soft tannins, this will be enjoyable even in its youth. Drink 2025-2038.

Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains Domaine Gagey
£440.00 per 6 bottles IB

(Not tasted.) Situated above the famed Les St Georges vineyard, to the south of the town of Nuits St Georges, Les Vaucrains always produces a bold wine with impressive density.

Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots Domaine Gagey
£440.00 per 6 bottles IB

This superb, half-hectare parcel belongs to the Gagey family with whom Maison Louis Jadot have been fortunate enough to hold a long-term contract for the fruit. Charming and open-knit, there is a playful interplay between red cherry and toasted oak on the nose, which is carried over onto the palate. There is a hint of sweetness early on which eventually gives way to the wine’s natural power and chalky tannins. A joy to taste. Drink 2025-2040.

Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées
£535.00 per 6 bottles IB

(Not tasted.) Les Fuées is situated near the Bonnes Mares Grand Cru vineyard and is therefore one of the most sought after of Premiers Crus in the appellation. It combines Morey St Denis generosity the finesse and refinement so closely associated with the appellation of Chambolle.

Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St Jacques
£478.00 per 3 bottles IB

Situated on a steep slope with excellent south-east exposure, Clos St Jacques could conceivably be a Grand Cru. Certainly, this is the wine that everyone is queuing around the block for, with fruit sourced from one of Burgundy’s finest growers. Elegant with a beautiful purity of red and black fruit both on the nose and palate, the wine has wonderful texture and, while the tannins are not shy in making their presence felt, they are powdery in nature and support the fruit. Drink 2025-2038.

Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru
£655.00 per 3 bottles IB

Always a strapping young lad of a Grand Cru in its formative years, this Chapelle Chambertin is as boisterous as it has ever been. Dark plum, wild bramble fruit, and toasted spice notes on the nose, the palate shows wonderful depth where the judicious use of oak is tempered by delicate hints of mediterranean herbs and fresher black fruit. This will age wonderfully over time.
Drink 2028-2040.

Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru
£670.00 per 3 bottles IB

(Not tasted.) Charmes Chambertin is situated on the east facing slope between Mazoyères Chambertin Grand Cru, Latricières Chambertin and Chambertin Grand Cru. Charmes is derived from ‘Chaume’, meaning stubble or thatch, indicating the former presence of a field of grain. Always a full-bodied wine, this shows its colours at a very early stage, whilst having the depth to age for the long term.

Echezaux Grand Cru Domaine Gagey
£1,310.00 per 6 bottles IB

From a small parcel located south of Clos de Vougeot, this east-to-south-facing vineyard sits on limestone soil, resulting in a more structured Echezaux. 2023 has turned up the dial in terms of the wine’s aromatic profile, where both red and black fruit, toasted oak nuances, and cacao nibs dominate nose. On the palate, there is a lovely sweetness of fruit, while fine-grained tannins and a limestone-inflected minerality make this a truly delectable wine. Drink 2028-2042.

Chambertin Clos de Béze Grand Cru
£1,115.00 per 3 bottles IB

(Not tasted) This cuvée is sourced from half a hectare in the very centre of Gevrey Chambertin’s great Grand Cru, favoured by the Abbot of Beze. Famed for its suave and sophisticated style, with a terroir intensity and structure that sets it apart with the appellation.

DOMAINE ROLLIN | PERNAND VERGELESSES

A relative newcomer to our portfolio, 2023 being only our second En Primeur vintage with the estate, Domaine Rollin is a fourth generation domaine with 14 hectares of vines within the Côte de Beaune. Founded by Raymond Rollin, a vineyard worker in the village of Pernand Vergelesses who slowly accumulated enough vines for his son Maurice to set up his own domaine and bottle under the family name in 1955. Today, the estate is assiduously managed by Maurice’s grandson Simon.

Whilst they are not accredited as organic, the vineyards are managed respecting both the soil and the flora and fauna surrounding their vines. The white wines are vinified after a very slow pressing in barrel, a small proportion of which are new. During the élevage they all receive gentle lees stirring each week and bottling takes place after 12 months in barrel. The policy for the red wines is to destalk 100%, followed by a delicate extraction, preferring the process of délestage (splashing rather than pumping over or down), and a barrel ageing process of 10–15 months, vintage dependent, to preserve the aromatics and finesse of the Pinot Noir. Simon comments that 2023 was the largest harvest since the outstanding 1999 vintage, as he says, not a bad reference point!

Pernand-Vergelesses Blanc Les Cloux
£171.00 per 6 bottles IB

Sitting behind the hill of Corton, these vines are positioned within a sheltered combe which offers protection and warmth, ideal for managing temperature fluctuations. The vineyard’s warmer location comes through with appealing yellow fruit characters of apricot and melon. A silky, creamy mouthfeel, whilst maintaining a zing of Pernand freshness with hints of roasted nuts on the finish. Drink 2025-2030

Pernand-Vergelesses Rouge 1er Cru Les Fichots
£186.00 per 6 bottles IB

This, the oldest section of vines within the Rollin estate, was planted by Raymond Rollin back in 1945. The soil is an excellent representation of the appellation, combining clay and red iron with a firm bedrock of limestone. Simon destalks 100% of the fruit, to focus on the charm and florality of Pinot Noir. Shining brick red colour, the red cherry fruit flavours have substance and depth thanks to the grippy tannins sitting quietly underneath. Deep, full and rich, showing the benefit of the 75-year-old vines and the excellent vineyard location. Drink 2027-2035

DOMAINE RAPET | PERNAND VERGELESSES

Domaine Rapet, founded in 1765, boasts 20 hectares of some of the finest vineyards in the northern end of the Côte de Beaune. They have 21 different cuvées from five different villages around the town of Beaune, including an enviable two-hectare parcel of Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru. Vincent Rapet assumed responsibility for the domaine in 1985 at just 21 and, much to his delight, has been joined by his son Robin from the 2022 vintage. Robin continues the careful and thoughtful winemaking philosophy of his father, not fully organic, but careful, environmentally respectful practices. The super quality of fruit in the vineyard underpins the success of this fine estate’s wines. The domaine’s style is not one of exuberance, but rather composure and intensity.

Robin and Vincent felt it was important to control the yields in 2023 and so undertook a green harvest in July. The benefits of which were noticeable present during our primeur tastings. This careful canopy management ensured excellent airflow through the vines, protecting the crop from disease during periods of humidity in mid-summer. Additionally, this selective approach brought about a high degree of concentration and intensity of flavours in their wines. For his red wines, Robin opted for on average 30% whole bunch vinification, which is reflected in a glorious degree of aromatic scent in his fine 2023s.

Pernand Vergelesses 1er Cru En Caradeux
£225.00 per 6 bottles IB

This impressive Premier Cru faces the hillside of Corton Charlemagne. The cool, east-facing white marl slope makes it an ideal site for growing exceptionally pure Chardonnay, a perfect position as temperatures rise throughout the Côte d’Or. Following fermentation in barrel, 80% of the wine goes through cask aging and 20% in cement egg shaped cuvées, to maintain the freshness. A floral, tuberose scent, an initial graceful rounded texture flows into an orange citrus lift. A rewarding and appealingly long finish. Drink 2026-2030

Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru
£675.00 per 6 bottles IB
£695.00 per 3 magnums IB

Vincent categorises the vines for this fine cuvée into three groups: his younger vines under 30 years which give 30% of the cuvée, the next 30% from 30-year-old vines, and the final 40% from vines aged between 40- 60 years, all from the Pernand Vergelesses sector of the hillside. 30% new oak and 12 months in barrel, followed by 6 months in stainless steel, precede bottling. Generous and giving aromas of nectarine and quince, flavours of brioche and freshly kneaded dough. A wine of structure and presence showing its Grand Cru credentials. An abundance of class. Drink 2026-2038

Beaune 1er Cru Les Cent Vignes
£220.00 per 6 bottles IB
£240.00 per 3 magnums IB

The light sand and limestone soil always gives a refined style of red Beaune. In 2023, its free-draining capabilities leant itself perfectly to some of the wetter conditions, explaining the exceptional quality of the cuvée in think vintage. Sweet cherry and grenadine bouquet. A surprising boldness for the appellation, with a juicy succulence, the tannins are soft and silky with a beautiful, spiced persistence on the finish. Drink 2026-2036

Corton Grand Cru
£470.00 per 6 bottles IB
£490.00 per 3 magnums IB

The Rapet Corton comes from two different parcels on the Aloxe Corton side of the hill. The vines here are planted on red iron soil, providing substance and backbone to the naturally harmonious style of wine for which Vincent and Robin strive. A dark bramble fruit scent, sloe and Morello cherry and spiced new oak (30%). Rewarding breadth on the palate, the red soil tannins provide depth and structure, and aromatic spice comes back on the finish to create a wine of complexity and nuance. Drink 2027 -2045

DOMAINE CHANDON DE BRIAILLES |
SAVIGNY LÈS BEAUNE

Built between 1690 and 1705 by André Le Nôtre, the architect and landscape designer who renovated the gardens of Château de Versailles at the behest of Louis XIV, the Château at the heart of this domaine is of historic importance and is almost certainly one of the prettiest estates in the whole of Burgundy. Owned by the family since 1834, it is now run by the fourth generation, with Claude de Nicolay at the helm. The family were leaders in organic farming practices from the early 1990s and further deepened their commitment to holistic vineyard management by adopting biodynamic viticultural methods in 2005. Vineyard work is now undertaken by a dedicated team, who ensure the estate’s five horses only ever spend a maximum of four hours in the vines per day. Numerous infusions, containing ingredients such as horsetail, nettles and orange oil are also regularly applied to the estate’s vines in accordance with the biodynamic calendar. Almost 20 years on from their move to biodynamic approaches, Claude feels they are now reaping the benefits; the vines having put down even deeper roots, making them resilient to the trials of a changing and unpredictable climate.

Summarising the 2023 vintage, Claude underlined the fact that yields at Chandon de Briailles averaged 38 hectolitres per hectare, which is only slightly above the maximum permitted for Burgundy’s Grands Crus. Although many estates across the region enjoyed a larger harvest, the domaine undertook a severe debudding in May, leaving only eight potential bunches per vine. This is a riskier strategy than green harvesting, as unanticipated, late season hail could easily decimate an already reduced crop. However, Claude prefers this as an approach, believing that a green harvest stresses the vines unduly, forcing them to put considerable energy into growing bunches that are then discarded. The tightly controlled yields, coupled with a late season heatwave that pushed the grapes to full ripeness, have produced wines which Claude labels ‘gouleyant’ – fresh, lively, undeniably delicious. Having tasted the range, we cannot disagree.

Pernand Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile de Vergelesses Blanc
£455.00 per 6 bottles IB

With such a large holding in this Premier Cru (2.55 hectares), the domaine have turned part of their acreage over to Chardonnay. A cooler site with clay limestone soils, this wine always tends towards a floral and elegant expression of this grape variety.  Open and pretty, this wine shows bright notes of lemon curd and yellow plums with additional complexity coming from hints of both white blossom and toasted almond. The creamy texture of the palate is lifted by vibrant, stone-inflected acidity and a lovely touch of spiciness on the very finish. Drink 2026 – 2032.

Corton Grand Cru Blanc
£595.00 per 3 bottles IB

(Not tasted). This is a fascinating white wine coming from two plots, one in Corton Bessandes and the other in Corton Chaumes below Charlemagne. Owing to a lack of Pinot vines at the nursery back in the 1970s, Corton Chaumes was planted with Chardonnay, and so a star was born. Coming from red soil, this is always quite a structured white wine, depth and profound earthy complexity.

Savigny lès Beaune Aux Fournaux
£260.00 per 6 bottles IB

The village-level Fournaux in this cuvée is given extra oomph by the inclusion of a proportion of old vine fruit from the Premier Cru section of this same vineyard. As Claude herself states, this is a “super village”, overdelivering against its humble appellation. The 2023 shows an aromatic and beguiling nose with notes of black cherry and sun-warmed raspberries that are underpinned by a smoky minerality almost reminiscent of graphite. There is a lovely volume of fruit sweetness here, which nonetheless allows a stony freshness to shine through. A gentle framework of ripe tannins leaves a pleasing, chalky grip on the finish. Drink 2026 – 2034.

Savigny lès Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières
£345.00 per 6 bottles IB

The domaine own a sizeable 2.6-hectare plot in this Premier Cru, which is named after the slabs, or ‘laves’, of clay that make up its soils, and some of their vines date back as far as 1956. The combination of clay soils and old-vine fruit gives a plush cuvée with plenty of character and complexity. Layered and intriguing on the nose, this wine sings with notes of Morello cherry, sun-ripened raspberries, dried wild herbs and a crunch of fresh black pepper. Sumptuous fruit sweetness is underpinned by a shimmering line of acidity and seamless, velvety tannins. A delicious expression of Pinot that is both generous and elegant. Drink 2026 – 2042.

Pernand Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des Vergelesses
£425.00 per 6 bottles IB

This 4-hectare plot of 50-year-old vines is the family’s pride and joy, and plays an ambassadorial role for the commune of Pernand Vergelesses, much as the hill of Corton does for its namesake appellation. Pretty and engaging notes of red cherry and raspberry are in evidence here, alongside a perfumed hint of violets and a spicy touch of white pepper. Rounded, compact fruit sweetness is held aloft by energetic mineral tension and fine-boned, supple tannin. Although this wine has power and presence, it remains subtle and leaves a lasting impression of elegance and poise. Drink 2026 – 2040.

Corton Les Maréchaudes Grand Cru
£945.00 per 6 bottles IB

(Not tasted.) The Maréchaudes vineyard sits just below Corton Bressandes. This wine is always very expressive in its youth, with a healthy degree of flamboyance, but thanks to the high proportion of red iron and clay soils has a excellent aging potential.

Corton Les Bressandes Grand Cru
£1,125.00 per 6 bottles IB

The fruit for this Grand Cru comes from four sources within the Bressandes vineyard; two close to Ladoix, where the soils have a high clay content, and two closer to Aloxe Corton, which enjoy a higher percentage of limestone. These radically different soil types combine to give a very complete Pinot, and the 2023 proves no exception.  With inviting notes of black cherry, forest fruits, violet, and spicy black pepper, this wine entices from the outset. Layers of lush ripe fruit are wrapped around architectural tannins, while wet-stone acidity ensures the wine vibrates with tension and drive. Although overtly structured, this is an accomplished, elegant wine that wears its muscular framework lightly. Drink 2028 – 2050.

Corton Clos Du Roi Grand Cru
£1,850.00 per 6 bottles IB

At 300 metres this steep vineyard close to Corton Charlemagne is the highest in altitude, facing east and containing a high proportion of clay-limestone marl. Claude describes this as the most “aristocratic wine” in their portfolio. A wine which combines florality and perfume alongside a very distinctive structure and backbone, guaranteeing longevity. Drink 2028-2050

DOMAINE SIMON BIZE | SAVIGNY LÈS BEAUNE

Domaine Simon Bize is a substantial estate in Savigny Lès Beaune, with a total of 22 hectares that include 6 very diverse Premiers Crus and two Grands Crus parcels in Corton Charlemagne and Latricières Chambertin. Since her husband, Patrick, died in 2013, Chisa Bize has run the estate according to a blend of organic and biodynamic practices, which she refers to as ‘Bize-dynamics’. She has also continued to uphold the domaine’s long-established practice of whole bunch vinification, as this approach has proven well suited to the terroir of their various holdings, producing long-lived wines with enhanced fruit characters and highly polished tannins.

In 2023, Chisa and her team, who haven’t destemmed their fruit since the 2018 harvest, stood by their commitment to vinifying whole bunches, with every last cuvée undergoing this type of fermentation. Once in the winery, the grapes were handled very gently with no intervention during the first five days of vinification. This was then followed by only the lightest pigeage. With such a considered, detailed approach applied from vineyard to grape to glass, it is no wonder that this domaine has gained the attention of many Burgundy lovers.

Savigny lès Beaune Aux Grands Liards
Price TBC

Traditionally a blend across three different parcels that were planted by successive generations of the family in 1939, 1950 and 1979, this cuvée now also includes fruit from a new parcel of vines planted in 2019. The wine opens with a bright, aromatic nose of fresh cranberries and redcurrant, with a whisp of white pepper spice. This is a muscular style of Pinot, with robust, ripe tannins, a mineral-edged core and a vibrant line of red-toned acidity. A wine that will undoubtedly unfurl with time in bottle. Drink 2027-2037

Savigny lès Beaune 1er Cru Fournaux
Price TBC

The Bize family own a hectare of this Premier Cru, which borders the commune of Pernand-Vergelesses, and their holding is right the top of the vineyard where the soils are pebbly and free-draining. The 2023 shows vibrant notes of sun-ripened raspberries and red cherries, with an appealing overlay of crushed pink peppercorn. Deliciously pure fruit gives a sensation of summer berry sweetness, supported by fine-grained tannins with an almost polished texture. Bright acidity brings freshness, tension and drive to the palate. Already very well knit together, there is a wealth of potential for further development with careful cellar aging. Drink 2027-2037.

Bourgogne Rouge Le Perrières Simon Bize
Price TBC

The fruit for this cuvée comes from a 1.8-hectare parcel of 50-year-old vines that overlook Savigny. This is a delightfully fragrant Pinot with vivid notes of cranberry, red cherries and a lick of herbal complexity. Pure and fresh, a crunchy, mineral texture to the mid palate gives real poise to the rounded fruit sweetness. Subtle, chalky tannins add grip and structure on the finish. Drink 2026- 2034.

Savigny lès Beaune 1er Cru Les Talmettes
Price TBC

Les Talmettes is a steep, south-facing vineyard that sits underneath the Bois de Noël, with soils that are known for their high sandstone content. Usually producing a lush style of Pinot, this vineyard has certainly conformed to type in 2023. The aromatic and inviting nose is full of Morello cherry, raspberry and pomegranate fruit aromas, with a savoury, tart edge of reminiscent of dried cherry stones. There is a lovely volume of fruit sweetness here, underpinned by quivering acidity, a distinct mineral tension and firm but refined tannins. Drink 2027-2040.

Savigny lès Beaune 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses
Price TBC

Regarded as one of the prime vineyards within Savigny, the Bize family own a substantial, 2.2-hectare plot in this Premier Cru, which they consider to be one of their signature cuvées. With vines planted in 1939, 1949 and 1954, there is a wealth of old vine complexity and depth to be found in this wine. The 2023 is immediately engaging with vibrant notes of cranberry, raspberry, white pepper spice and a hint of savoury wild herbs. Tightly coiled and muscular, the ripe, red-toned fruit is woven around firm, fine-grained tannins and enlivened by mineral-toned acidity. This is a weighty and serious expression of Pinot that will require time to reveal its full potential. Drink 2028-2044.

Latricières Chambertin Grand Cru Simon Bize
Price TBC

Loosely derived from the Latin for ‘nothing much’, the name ‘Latricières’ is thought to refer to the poverty of the soils. However, it’s hard not to interpret this as a somewhat tongue-in-cheek epithet; the soils here are actually deeper than those found in most Gevrey Grands Crus and the wines from this 7.3-hectare vineyard could never be accurately described as ‘nothing much’! Fragrant notes of ripe Morello cherry, exotic pomegranate and raspberry coulis are lifted by a whisp of black pepper and a wild savouriness. This is a dense, weighty and concentrated wine, which is currently tightly coiled, reticent to display its many charms. Ripe, if slightly angular, tannins add an overt structure to the fruit, which is shot through with a vibrant, mineral-inflected acidity. All the elements of a great Grand Cru are undeniably here; all that’s now needed is the alchemy of time. Drink 2030-2052.

DOMAINE PAVELOT | SAVIGNY LÈS BEAUNE

We are delighted to launch the wines of Domaine Jean Marc and Hugues Pavelot this vintage as one of our exciting new finds following the Grands Jours de Bourgogne tastings in March. The Pavelot family, with their 13 hectares in the Côte de Beaune, have been vignerons for many generations, but Hugues Pavelot represents only the 3rd generation of Pavelots selling the wines under the family name. Prior to the Second World War, all their fruit was sold to negociants in Beaune. In recent years, Hugues has taken the estate into organic viticulture and the domaine boasts some of the oldest vineyards in Savigny Les Beaune, with their Dominode and Gravains parcels planted over 80 years ago. They eschew excessive use of new oak, preferring all the natural elements to shine through in their wines, to offer a strong communal identity.

In 2023, they concentrated their picking in the early mornings, finishing at 1.00pm. This allows Hugues to vinify immediately on arrival to the winery in the afternoons in natural cellar temperatures. He prefers destalking and racked the 2023 wines after 12 months in cask to preserve and capture the fruit content. After a period of settling in tank, they will do an earlier bottling in 2025.

Savigny Lès Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode
£225.00 per 6 bottles IB

Taking its name from the Domio family, who were large landowners in the 16th century, the sandy clay soil and north easterly aspect of the vineyard, along with the Domaine’s 80 year old vines, make this an ever more appealing Premier Cru as climate change has an ever increasing impact. A more backward style, with a taut core, there is huge energy, drive and freshness. The fruit flavours are wild and gamey; this has a sense of attitude and all the prospects to age for many years. DOMAINE TOLLOT BEAUT | CHOREY LÈS BEAUNE

Tollot-Beaut own 24 hectares of vineyards in the communes of Chorey lès Beaune, Savigny lès Beaune, Aloxe Corton and Beaune. They were one of the first estates in the Côte d’Or to bottle their own wines in the 1930s and market them under their Domaine label. Today, the estate is run by Nathalie Tollot and her two cousins Olivier and winemaker Jean-Paul Tollot who is married to Anne Gros of Vosne-Romanée fame. Jean-Paul wants his wines to be pleasurable and approachable, without losing any appellational identity. This youthful charm can be misleading, as history shows the estate’s wines also have an outstanding propensity to age.

They started picking on 5th September, relatively early in their section of the Côte de Beaune, to keep the Pinot freshness in their wines. That said, Nathalie explained there was no escaping the heat of September, and so worked non-stop from 6:00AM to 4:00PM to gather the fruit as quickly as possible. Targeting 3 hectares a day with 70 pickers, they managed to cover the whole estate in just 9 days! The image of harvest as a time of joy and laughter might be true, but there is no escaping the extraordinarily hard and back breaking work it also entails.

This is a fine Premier Cru facing southwest towards Pernand Vergelesses and Savigny lès Beaune, recognised as being a cooler spot and excelling in warmer years such as 2023. Nathalie comments that the vineyard has a specific clone which gives particularly small berries and creates a wine of fine intensity, slightly less angular than many Aloxes. Redolent with vibrant red berry fruit, this is alive and pure, with a hint of ripe sweetness on the finish. Very giving in style.  Drink 2027-2038

MAISON ROCHE DE BELLENE | BEAUNE

Maison Roche de Bellene is the creation of Nicolas Potel, who grew up at Domaine de la Pousse d’Or in Volnay. He holds dear the historic négociant values, finding and blending the best cuvées to represent the individuality of an appellation. He has verbal contracts with growers throughout the Côte d’Or, allowing him to maintain positions for the most prized vineyards. Occasionally he might lose a parcel but, on the plus side, it gives him flexibility to find new ones and make exciting additions to his range.

For his negociant wines, Nicolas carefully oversees and advises on vineyard management. The growers vinify the wines, as was the tradition for négoce, and then Nicolas selects his preferred casks following vinification, completing the barrel élévage in his cellars in Beaune. For the 2023 vintage, all Maison Roche de Bellene wines have been 100% destemmed to allow the purity and freshness of the fruit to take centre stage. In a step that speaks of his continual desire to improve quality and sustainability as widely as possible, Nicolas has recently embarked on a project to build a custom crush facility that will allow small-scale growers to access the latest winemaking equipment, powered and run to very high sustainability standards. A concept that remains relatively unheard of in France, it is certain that this will further elevate the already fantastic quality of wine produced under the Roche de Bellene banner.

BENJAMIN LEROUX | BEAUNE

Ben Leroux created his own label in 2007, which includes Domaine wines from a total of 8 hectares of vines and negociant wines, with grapes purchased from approximately 20 hectares across some the Côte d’Or. His background is exemplary: following internships at some of the greatest estates around the world, he was responsible for Pommard’s foremost estate, Comte Armand, for 15 years, making a roll call of exceptional vintages. For the negociant wines, his policy is to buy grapes rather than juice or wine. He insists on having a hand in the vineyards from which he buys, so that the fruit meets his exacting standards.

Speaking about the 2023 vintage, Ben was keen to underline that the two key challenges were to manage yields and select the right picking date. Following a very successful flowering, vines across the whole region had the potential to produce extremely high yields; as a result, quality-focussed winemakers such as Ben did a lot of work in the vineyard to bring the crop down to right level. Whilst many producers opted for a green harvest later in the season, Ben favoured on-going canopy management and, in the end, he only produced marginally higher volumes than in 2022. When it came to selecting a picking date, Ben’s aim was to preserve freshness and fruit purity. With this in mind he began picking on the 30th August and ensured all of his bunches were harvested within a short window. This approach has certainly had the desired effect; his 2023s are consistently fresh and shine with overt fruit purity.

Bourgogne Blanc
£138.00 per 6 bottles IB

The fruit for this cuvée is sourced from vineyards in both the Côte d’Or and the Hautes-Côtes, with the former bringing rounded fruit weight and the latter mouthwatering freshness. Bright, pretty notes of lemon curd and greengages sit alongside a gentle aroma of white blossom. Fresh, zesty acidity runs through the heart of this crisp, easy-drinking Bourgogne Blanc. Drink 2025-2028

Vougeot Clos du Village
£324.00 per 6 bottles IB

Vougeot Villages is something of a rarity, with only 3.22 hectares of vineyards using this classification. This village-level lieu-dit, which sits next door to Clos de Vougeot and below Chambolle les Amoureuses, is a lovely vineyard that we are delighted to offer exclusively. The 2023 Clos du Village is filled with vibrant notes of red cherry, cranberry and grenadine, with hints of black tea leaves and fresh violets. A ripe core of fruit sweetness is supported by buoyant acidity and supple, poised tannins. Drink 2026-2038

Chambolle Musigny
£456.00 per 6 bottles IB

Ben’s Chambolle Musigny brings together fruit from both the highest and lowest vineyards in the village; Les Veroilles and Les Athets, respectively. This combination of terroirs has been further enhanced this year by the inclusion of one barrel of Les Feusselottes Premier Cru in the final blend. Opening with vivid notes of redcurrant and cranberry, this wine also shows light hints of savoury spice and sun-baked earth. Restrained and structured, the palate is tightly wound with compact fruit buttressed by firm, fine-grained tannins. This will blossom with time. Drink 2027-2038.

Vosne Romanée
£456.00 per 6 bottles IB

Composed of fruit sourced from five different locations across the village, this cuvée provides a lovely introduction to the Vosne style. Packed with bright cherry fruit and aromas of grenadine, cranberry and savoury white pepper, there is a lovely purity at the heart of this wine. Bright, crystalline acidity and supple, silky tannins combine to deliver a satisfying, textural finish. Drink 2027-2038.

Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans
£456.00 per 6 bottles IB

The name Mitans derives from the old French word for middle or centre, an apt moniker for this Premier Cru vineyard, which lies both mid-slope and in the middle of Volnay. The 2023 is a bright, pretty take on Pinot Noir, in which vibrant notes of redcurrant and cranberry are lifted by a hint of dried wild herbs. Fresh, crunchy acidity gives a sprightly quality to the palate, which finishes with a bite of chalky tannin. Drink 2026-2036

Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots
£675.00 per 6 bottles IB

Located on the very northern edge of Nuits St Georges, and neighbouring Vosne Romanée’s Malconsorts, Aux Boudots enjoys well-drained soils with plenty of stones and is a prized source of high-class fruit. With fragrant notes of wild herbs, violets, mint and Morello cherry, this is an attractive cuvée already showing good aromatic breadth. There is real clarity to the mid-palate fruit, which is sustained by a vibrant line of mineral-driven acidity and sweet, fine-grained tannins. An attractive, poised expression of Nuits with layers of savoury spice on the finish. Drink 2027-2040.

Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru
£720.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

The grapes for this cuvée are sourced from a tiny parcel on the border with Morey, in the Mazoyères section of the Charmes vineyard. Although the land here begins to flatten, the wines still have the stature and status of a Grand Cru; the alluvial fan from the Grisard valley having carried the stony, iron-rich subsoils of the main vineyard all the way to its edges. Initially slightly shy on the nose, this wine opens out in the glass to reveal precise and pretty aromas of cranberry, freshly unfurled peonies and dried wild herbs. The ripe and charming, red-toned fruit on the palate is underpinned with vibrant, crystalline acidity and fine-grained tannins that bring a chalky bite to the finish. Drink 2028-2045.

Clos de Vougeot Petit Maupertuis Grand Cru
£720.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

The fruit for this cuvée comes from a tiny 0.15-hectare plot at the southern end of the Clos de Vougeot vineyard and only two barrels were produced from the 2023 vintage. Immediately open and expressive, this wine sings with notes of sun-ripened raspberries, violets and wild herbs, with a lovely lift of orange zest to tie the whole together. Plush, ripe fruit is gently corralled by fine grained, suave tannins and pure, luminous acidity. Deceptively delicate, there is an underlying power here that will support long cellar ageing. Drink 2027-2045.

Echezeaux Grand Cru
£825.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

The fruit for this Grand Cru is all sourced from the En Orveaux section of the Echézeaux vineyard, which has only has very sparse topsoil above the limestone bedrock and sits in a naturally cooler spot. The 2023 has an immediately beguiling nose, with perfumed notes of sun-ripened red cherries, pomegranate, dried wild herbs and lightly toasted, savoury spice. Dense and weighty on the palate, this is a powerful, muscular wine with tightly-wound, sleek tannins and driving, focussed acidity that is the undeniable calling card of Orveaux’s limestone terroir. A powerful wine, quivering with mineral tension and verve. Drink 2029-2048.

Clos St. Denis Grand Cru
£825.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

(Not tasted.) A revered Grand Cru of just 6 hectares, nestled between Clos des Lambrays and Clos de la Roche. This outstanding spot produces silky and sensual wines, with Chambolle like charm, but underneath sits some Gevrey-esque stature to give it excellent aging potential.

Chambertin Grand Cru
£975.00 per single magnum IB
(On Allocation)

Followers of this wine should note that sadly, Ben will not be releasing a Chambertin from the 2024 vintage, as the growing season was so challenging that there is simply no Chambertin from his contracted vines. Happily, the 2023 was a much more successful vintage, and this wine sings with enticing aromas of red cherry, grenadine, dried wild herbs and a whisp of savoury oak. A delicious, sweet core of red-toned fruit is supported by ripe tannins that provide a powerful, muscular structure. Vivacious, mineral-laden redcurrant acidity weaves through palate and ensures a poised, elegant finish. Drink 2029-2048.

DOMAINE COMTE ARMAND | POMMARD

This 5.23-hectare monopole has been in the Comte Armand family since 1828 and, as Pommard’s most celebrated vineyard, it arguably just missed out on Grand Cru status. In the extremely capable hands of Paul Zanetti, this domaine is now fully biodynamic in its vineyard management and winemaking practices. Over the past 25 years the family have carefully expanded their vineyard holdings in the locality. Today, their stable of wines offers a wonderful representation of the Côte de Beaune, including vineyards in Volnay and the much-overlooked village of Auxey Duresses which, thanks in part to Paul’s efforts, is amongst others rapidly gaining credibility as a rising star in the southern Côte d’Or.

In a move indicative of Paul’s appetite for experimentation, the fruit from the 2023 harvest wasn’t all destemmed as it had been for both the 2021 and 2022 vintages. Instead, several cuvées were produced with varying amounts of whole bunch fermentation and a proportion of the estate’s Bourgogne Aligoté was even vinified in a new concrete egg. Followers of these wines can be assured that these innovations have only serve to enhance the flavour profile of the wines; the Comte Armand style remains unchanged, with quality and terroir expression to the fore.

Bourgogne Aligoté
£110.00 per 6 bottles IB

This cuvée brings together fruit from three individual plots, two of which are located in Volnay and the third in Meursault. The Volnay portion of the blend is from relatively young vines, which bring vivacity and freshness, whilst the Meursault fruit is from 90-year-old vines, giving depth, weight and presence. Open and beautifully expressive, the nose is filled with notes of apple blossom, confit lemons and grapefruit zest. There is a good weight of yellow plum fruit at the core of this wine, along with a creamy, vinous texture that speaks of old vine complexity. Juicy, mouth-watering acidity and a touch of sweet spice bring this delicious white to a satisfying close. Drink 2025 – 2029.

Auxey Duresses
£155.00 per 6 bottles IB

Sitting directly behind Meursault and with a northern exposure that is proving beneficial as the climate changes, the vineyards of Auxey Duresses are fast gaining recognition for producing charming representations of Pinot Noir. The 2023 shows bright, pretty notes of red cherry, grenadine and white pepper spice. With an abundance of ripe, supple red fruit, this cuvée has immediate appeal – it is just eminently approachable. Fine-grained tannins offer support and structure without overwhelming the fruit purity. Buoyant acidity and a lick of spice on the finish ensure that the liveliness of the nose follows right through to the finish. Drink 2026 – 2032.

Volnay
£225.00 per 6 bottles IB

The fruit for this cuvée comes from two different vineyards within Volnay: Les Grands Champs, providing finesse and elegance, and Les Famines, giving body and power. Highly expressive and fragrant, the 2023 has layered scents of black cherries, raspberry coulis, dried wild herbs and savoury spice. Succulent and weighty, there is a delightful volume of forest fruits at the core of this wine, supported by stone-driven acidity and robust tannins that deliver a chalky bite to the finish. A wine that will relax into itself with a couple of years in bottle. Drink 2027 – 2037.

Auxey Duresses 1er Cru
£345.00 per 6 bottles IB

The domaine owns three very small parcels within this Premier Cru: Les Bretarins, Les Bas des Duresses and Climat du Val. As such, the wines from these three sites are blended together as a single cuvée to give a complete, rounded expression of Auxey Premier Cru. It opens with ripe and beguiling notes of wild cherries, sun-warmed raspberries, a hint of black pepper and something a little savoury. Showing a lovely density of fruit sweetness at its core, this wine sings with crystalline acidity that brings a stony, mineral edge to the palate. Although there is overt structure here, the tannins are ripe and fine-grained, giving the lightest indication of their presence on the finish. Drink 2027 – 2037.

Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets
£465.00 per 6 bottles IB

Situated in the middle of a slope, this Premier Cru lies at the Pommard end of the village and benefits from the iron-rich soils of its neighbour. The lower part of the vineyard ripens early, which is why this is always the first parcel to be picked at the domaine. The layered and fragrant nose displays notes of wild violets, Morello cherry and a touch of bitter almond. Rounded upfront fruit has a crystalline purity and is held together by a driving energy and finely spun tannins. A cuvée of immediate charm and vibrancy, there is still substance that will unveil further complexity after careful cellaring. Drink 2027 – 2042.

Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Épeneaux
£625.00 per 6 bottles IB

A monopole in the family since 1826, the Clos is divided into four different sections based on location and age of the vines, with the oldest quadrant being a 1.5-hectare parcel of 100-year-old pieds. Each of the four parcels is vinified and barrel aged separately, with the final blend assembled a few months before bottling. Tasting from barrel is done by parcel, to show the individual character of each part of the vineyard, before a blend is prepared in-situ. This is en primeur tasting with flair! The 2023 is a marvellously complex wine, showing an array of Morello cherry, pomegranate and black forest fruit aromas that are enlivened with whisps of black pepper, crushed violets and savoury, wild herbs. Initially, the pure fruit core seems to be driven, linear and highly focussed. However, it opens out to reveal a deliciously moreish breadth that is effortlessly supported by fine, velvety tannins. With a long and sustained finish, this is a wine of Grand Cru stature.
Drink 2029 – 2055.

DOMAINE ANNE-FRANÇOISE GROS | POMMARD

Following their marriage in 1998, François Parent and Anne-Françoise Gros combined their family estates in Pommard and Vosne Romanée to create this superb 11-hectare estate under the A F Gros label. The domaine comprises some of the finest terroirs in the Côte d’Or, benefitting further in 2022 when Anne-Françoise’s aunt in Vosne Romanée passed on her vineyards to her nephews and nieces, meaning a reorganisation amongst the different branches of Gros family and their holdings in the Côte de Nuits. Anne- Françoise has been the lucky beneficiary of an additional half hectare of Echezeaux and a new parcel of Clos de Vougeot. François and Anne-Françoise have now stepped aside to let their children run the estate. Caroline looks after the commercial side and Mathias the vineyards and winemaking. Attentive to the environment, Mathias follows organic practices in the vineyard which he carries through into his winemaking, intervening as little as possible in the process.

Mathias Gros explained the importance of being versatile in years such as 2023. When fruit is in abundance, berry ripening becomes a priority. They undertook an extensive green harvest in July before the grapes started their veraison (turning of colour), and come harvest time, they took advantage of the warm conditions at the beginning of September. Mathias deferred picking from 1st to 10th September, and by doing so gained 1.5 degrees of natural alcohol, to compensate for the size of berries and bunches; each bunch was double its usual weight in 2023! His drive for fruit purity and minimal use of sulphur continues; he now ages his wines 50% in ceramic egg-shaped vessels, and 50% in cask. This is a fine range, with fine Pinot and vineyard typicity.

Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Blanc
£135.00 per 6 bottles IB

(Not tasted.) The higher slopes above the Côte de Nuits produce a vibrant and refreshing style of Chardonnay, with fine poise and vibrant freshness.

Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Rouge
£135.00 per 6 bottles IB

As climatic changes become ever more relevant in the Côte d’Or, the higher altitude vineyards of the Hautes Côtes become increasingly appealing. Sitting above Nuits St Georges, these vineyards have a precision and purity that accentuates the bright energy of Pinot Noir. Harmonised by the final blush of heat at harvest time, this has a sweet and approachable richness. Most definitely worth a purchase this year. Drink 2025-2032

Savigny lès Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Guettes
£295.00 per 6 bottles IB

On the upper slopes of the valley with an excellent clay content in the soil, this is a bolder style of Savigny. Wild strawberry fruit bouquet and alpine flowers. An abundant and generous wine, with a sweet richness and broad rounded tannic profile. Drink 2026-2039

Beaune 1er Cru Les Boucherottes
£295.00 per 6 bottles IB

Les Boucherottes is on the southern boundary of Beaune just above Pommard’s Epenots vineyards. This side of the appellation tends to produce poised, elegant wines rather than the firmer, more muscular style of the northern side of the commune. A slightly darker fruit personality than some years, with notes of Morello cherry and fruit compote. Tightly integrated, with deeper than usual tannins, there lifted by a burst of zippy freshness on the finish. Drink 2027-2037

Chambolle Musigny
£425.00 per 6 bottles IB

The domaine has five parcels across the village and blends them to make a beautiful Chambolle Musigny. Giving and charming, this is generous with soft silky tannins and an appealing touch of grenadine sweetness on the finish. Drink 2027-2035

Vosne Romanée Aux Réas
£450.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

This is an excellent parcel in Vosne Romanée situated in the vineyards that flow into Nuits St Georges at the southern end of the village. Mathias describes this as a serious styled wine for the appellation. Bright cherry and damson scent, with a sprinkle of cumin spice. A very controlled and pure wine, with delicious red fruit clarity. Poised with a tightly linked tannic core and great length. Drink 2027-2035

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru
£1,695.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

This is a lovely addition to the portfolio, amounting to half a hectare from two prime parcels named La Garenne and Musigny. Brilliant purple colour, this has a brooding core of dark cherry and wild hedgerow fruits. It caresses the palate with the hallmark richness of the vintage. Great length and the chalky minerality on the finish further accentuate the wonderful persistence of flavours. This is a wine for the long-term. Drink 2028-2055

Echézeaux Grand Cru
£950.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

The Gros parcel of Echézeaux is one of the finest in the appellation, in a plot called Les Loachauses on the Vosne-Romanée side of the appellation. An absolute beauty, with damson and fresh strawberry energy. It gracefully flows across the palate, with a glycerol, velvet-like texture. The finish holds back slightly, with a subtle presence of tannic tension. So very clearly a Grand Cru, giving the impression of statesmanlike control. Quite superb. Drink 2028-2057

Richebourg Grand Cru
£2,100.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

An admirable example of this majestic Grand Cru, situated on the northern sector of the vineyard, lying below Cros Parantoux. 60% whole bunch fruit, it has a wonderful perfume of raspberry, cranberry, rose petal and violet. The attack starts gracefully and builds to a crescendo, as the weight and concentration of fruit becomes ever more apparent. The fullness of the rounded tannins gives further depth and complexity. This has greatness in the making.  Drink 2030-2058

DOMAINE NICOLAS ROSSIGNOL | VOLNAY

Nicolas Rossignol is the fifth generation in his family of wine growers in Volnay and part of the dynamic generation who took on their family estates during the 1990s. Having started small with just 3 hectares, he has carefully built his domaine up to 17 hectares covering some of the most exceptional vineyards in Beaune, Pommard, Savigny Lès Beaune and Volnay. Nicolas’s winemaking is always adaptable, making the most of his modern winery on the outskirts of Beaune. He remains broadminded on the question of destalking versus whole bunch vinification. He likes his wines to develop slowly in cask, to bring out greater aromatic complexity and contribute to strengthening a wine.

Nicolas was his usual buoyant self when talking about the 2023. Yields were healthy and the quality of fruit was exceptional, meaning that these are some of his most approachable offerings of late. The climatic conditions meant that the tannins are soft and supple, resulting in a higher proportion of whole cluster vinification than normal. He is confident in the benefits of new oak from his new cooper, Bruno Lorenzon in Mercurey, a small producer who sources and ages the wood to create a style which gives tight minerality rather than fat exuberance. Like Nicolas himself, these are wines which are fearless and full of life.

Volnay Origines
£210.00 per 6 bottles IB

A blend of four unique plots, housing vines aged between 10 and 60 years old, this is a complex wine that belies its village status. The limestone-dominant parcels at the top of the hill bring refreshing minerality and a bright fruit profile, with fresh red cherry and cranberry notes that make it charming from the off. Meanwhile, the heavier clay soils towards the bottom of the slope bring power and depth to the core of the cuvée; a superb example of Nicolas’s skill. Drink 2025-2035.

Volnay 1er Cru Clos de Angles
£335.00 per 6 bottles IB

From the warmer Clos de Angles site in the centre of Volnay, the clay soils here produce a broader style and a wine that is always self-assured. Perfumed with bramble fruit, black cherry, and violets, there is an inky intensity as reflected in its dark hue. The palate is lively, with more dark fruit held aloft by electrifying freshness and supportive tannins akin to a bassist surfing the waves of an enraptured crowd. Drink 2025-2035.

Volnay 1er Cru Santenots
£445.00 per 6 bottles IB

At a little over 2 hectares, Nicolas Rossignol owns the largest portion of Les Santenots, a Premier Cru site that in fact lies wholly within Meursault. Here, the vineyards sit on large rocks of limestone with pockets of red, iron-rich soil, which produce wines that have the textural depth of Pommard, but without the boisterous tannins. Certainly, this is a ruminative, complex wine, yet its charming black berry profile, delicate spice, and juicy fruit-flecked tannins keep things utterly joyful. Drink 2026-2038.

Volnay 1er Cru Chevret
£445.00 per 6 bottles IB

Due to its location, Chevret is something of a mixture between neighbouring Santenots and Caillerets, but with a little more richness and less minerality on the finish. On the nose, there are wild blackberries, sweet cedarwood, and star anise, while the palate, with its corduroy-like tannins and soft texture, starts off gently before finishing with a mouth-watering, enlivening freshness. Drink 2026-2038.

Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets
£590.00 per 6 bottles IB

This is an exceptional example of one of Volnays finest Premiers Crus. The quality of fruit and ripeness of stalks and pips was such in 2023 that, unusually, Nicolas decided to whole bunch vinify 20% of the fruit. In doing so, he has absolutely hit the jackpot. This is an exceptional wine: sweet, juicy, wild berry fruits, vigorously full of life with a fine drive of mineral texture, firm on the finish, with great length. High class in every way. Drink 2027 - 2045

Pommard 1er Cru Les Épenots
£740.00 per 6 bottles IB

From the lower slopes of Pommard, there are parts of the vineyard which were planted way back in 1900, resulting in an extremely intense and concentrated wine. Once again, this wine was vinified using 100% whole clusters, such was the quality of fruit from these exceptional old vines. The nose displays intense black cherry and blackberry fruit, with a nod towards sweet liquorice and black pepper spice. With its soft, ripe tannins, concentration of fruit, and geniality, this is a Pommard which perfectly sums up Pinot Noir from 2023. It will age like a dream too! Drink 2026-2038.

DOMAINE JEAN-MARC BOILLOT | PULIGNY MONTRACHET

Bearing the name of founder Jean-Marc, this domaine is now managed by his daughter Lydie and husband François. This outstanding estate owes its origin to an inheritance from Jean-Marc’s grandfather Etienne Sauzet. Jean-Marc learnt his trade as winemaker at Sauzet, before setting up his own 11-hectare domaine with some of the finest vineyards in the Côte de Beaune. More recently they have purchased a further 10 hectares in the Mâconnais. Their vinification process is designed to express the purity of Puligny fruit: a short cold settling of 24 hours follows pressing, followed by 11 months élevage with a weekly bâtonnage before bottling.

Lydie is delighted with their 2023 wines. The return to normal volumes is a welcome relief, but more importantly, the character of the vintage perfectly suits the domaine’s preferred style: intensity and elegance of fruit in perfect balance. Following the excellent flowering conditions in early June, François was planning to start the harvest around 10th September. However, as always, vignerons must be adaptable, and the warm summer conditions meant that they brought forward their plans, starting harvest at the beginning of the month. This enabled them to preserve freshness, keeping it in harmony with the appealing ripeness of fruit and, vitally, keeping alcohol levels at around 13%.

Puligny Montrachet
£275.00 per 6 bottles IB

Two hectares of village Puligny from a selection of vineyard locations makes for a deliciously representative example of the commune’s wine. The nose is one of lively citrus, with aromas of blood orange and fresh pink grapefruit. There is a linear limestone minerality on the palate, enhanced by a subtle honeycomb texture. A combination of silky generosity and mouthwatering freshness. Drink 2025-2029

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne
£360.00 per 6 bottles IB

The highest of Puligny’s Premiers Crus, La Garenne sits below the treeline overlooking the village. So full of youthful energy with striking lemon sherbet scent, and a squeeze of fresh lime. The vineyard’s higher altitude is evident within the tightly woven linear chalky texture. Its naturally cooler position allows it to focus on fresh citrus fruits and a touch less exotic than some white wines this vintage! Drink 2025-2034

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts
£395.00 per 6 bottles IB

A lower lying Premier Cru in Puligny with a combination of clay and rocky, stony soils. This wine is always bold, complex, and long, and is a hugely sought after location amongst the growers in the village. A creamy, honeyed nose, with a hint of warm croissant. An opening impression of refinement gives way as the broader, more powerful structure builds on the palate. Tremendous length, and the orange zest on the finish gives a feeling of sweetness and zesty exuberance.  Drink 2025-2033

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet
£395.00 per 6 bottles IB

The vineyard’s close proximity to Meursault shines through in the naturally exuberant nature of this wine. A combination of clotted cream, pannacotta and lime zest lift all the aromatic sensations. Despite all the richness and generosity, it has a noticeable tension and underlying core of muscle. The finish is gorgeously hedonistic, with notes of buttered croissant and hazelnut and fabulous length. Drink 2026-2032

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes
£475.00 per 6 bottles IB

One of Puligny’s senior Premiers Crus and Lydie’s father, Jean-Marc’s favourite within the family’s portfolio of Premiers Crus. The complex scent of honeysuckle and white peach with notes of tarragon and celery salt is totally beguiling. On the palate, it is composed and refined; all the components are so beautifully integrated. There is lift, tension and a charming, sweet yellow fruit finish.  Drink 2026-2035

Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru
£925.00 per 3 bottles IB (On Allocation)

Whilst Bâtard-Montrachet has the same substructure as its neighbour Le Montrachet, it has a greater proportion of topsoil. The impact is to produce a flamboyant, powerful and generous Grand Cru. Domaine Jean Marc Boillot has just under 1/5th of a hectare on the Chassagne boundary, so this wine is a real rarity, so we felt hugely privileged to be able to taste it this year with Lydie. This 2023 is a more discreet version than some years, with subtle aromas of lemon sorbet, jasmine and thyme. The wine flows carefully across the palate, quietly building in volume and richness, with characters of lemon curd and crème anglaise. This is an exceptional Bâtard, with a lovely saline freshness on the finish.

DOMAINE JEAN-PHILIPPE FICHET | MEURSAULT

Back in the early 80’s, as a young 20-year-old taking over the family’s sharecropping arrangements in Meursault, Jean-Philippe was the youngest landowner and face to be seen in the vineyards. Roll on 40 years on, he is very much the Village’s senior statesman. No longer looking to his elders for advice, he is the one the next generation turn to. No grower has a better understanding of the commune’s soil and terroir. He respects both and most importantly the vine, stylistically he prefers earlier picking dates to deliver a stunning mineral freshness to his wines. In recent years he has moved to using less new oak and vinifying and aging his wines in larger cask rather than the traditional Burgundy 228 litre cask. His goal is for a total expression of fruit band terroir and to that end he consistently succeeds.

The secret to the success of Jean-Philippe’s 2023 wines is the balancing act between preserving early picking freshness and vintage integrity. His army of pickers attacked his vineyards quickly and efficiently. The core of fruit was picked before the excess of heat could take effect, whilst still allowing his grapes to express the riper yellow fruit flavours, which are very much the vintage trademark. This vintage stamp his signature as a master of his trade in both style and quality.

Bourgogne Blanc Vieilles Vignes Côte d’Or
£135.00 per 6 bottles IB

The dominant force in this old vine cuvée of Bourgogne Blanc comes from the Les Palland vineyard close to Puligny, planted between 1945 and 1950. A combination of pineapple and fresh grapefruit leads into more tropical notes with some firm, dry extract structure on the palate, whilst finishing with some lovely, moreish creamy vanilla notes. Drink 2025-2030

Monthelie Blanc
£150.00 per 6 bottles IB

The location of these vines on the slopes of Monthelie is warm, with a fine catchment of sunlight. This is immediately appealing, with notes of brioche, cream and honeyed nuts giving a generous Chardonnay personality. Drink 2025-2029

Meursault
£280.00 per 6 bottles IB
£300.00 per 3 magnums IB
£310.00 per 12 halves IB

Coming from five different vineyard plots in different locations, aspects, and soil types across the appellation, this is a classical representation of Meursault. Striking on the nose with fresh clotted cream and cracked hazelnut scent. It fills the mouth with its breadth; this is a very giving style, carefully held together by a structured mouthfeel. Lastingly hedonistic with a finish of guava and crème caramel. Lovely! Drink 2025-2032

Meursault Meix sous le Château
£295.00 per 6 bottles IB

A very central lieu-dit close to the village below the town hall. West facing and shaded in the morning, it makes the most of the afternoon sun and achieves excellent ripeness. Harvesting ahead of the very peak of the hot climatic conditions during the vintage time meant that this wine is not as plump in character as some years. The 2023 has a distinctive style, with floral aromas of jasmine, rose petal and white peach. Excellent purity, finishing with some textured Seville orange skin depth. Drink 2026-2032

Meursault Les Gruyaches
£350.00 per 6 bottles IB

From the oldest vineyards on the estate, these vines are nearly 100 years old, having been planted back in 1928 by Jean-Philippe’s grandfather. They continue to provide plentiful fruit with a very profound fruit quality, as one would expect from such an aged vineyard. A layer of smoky, buttered toast aromas is intertwined with pannacotta delicacy. A deep and intense wine, harmonising great concentration, with a gentle zest of citrus freshness. Long and lingering on the finish. Superb. Drink 2025-2034

Meursault Les Chevalières
£380.00 per 6 bottles IB

A parcel in the direction of Auxey-Duresses that derives its name from being the historical location where travellers would change horses as they continued their journeys through the region. This 2023 fully justifies Chevalières reputation as one of the appellation’s finest lieux dits. Full and exotic in style, with flavours of quince and jersey cream, the underlying clay soil weight gives the wine a profound feeling of depth and layered texture ahead of a rewarding lift of lemon zest and minerality. A wine of almost perfect balance. This is an exceptional cuvée. Drink 2027-2037

Meursault Le Tesson
£395.00 per 6 bottles IB

Talk to the senior growers in the village and they are all in agreement: this is Meursault’s Premier Cru that never was. It is only due to a quirk of history and appellational bureaucracy that it isn’t classified as one. A slightly more exotic style this year, combining a silky, creamy texture with flavours of satsuma, mango and kiwi. Mouth coating with an extraordinary volume and a finish of warm, buttery croissant. Drink 2026-2036

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts
£260.00 per 3 bottles IB

Les Referts is Puligny Montrachet’s last Premier Cru before you arrive in the commune of Meursault. Its clay and marl soils are more akin to its neighbour, and therefore makes a bolder style of Puligny, whilst retaining a purity and citrus zest. The initial impression is bright and energetic, with a refreshing seashore scent and striking stone fruit characters. The flavours evolve to give charming notes of rose petal and clementine, finishing more with Puligny discretion than Meursault abundance. Delightful. Drink 2027-2036

DOMAINE PATRICK JAVILLIER | MEURSAULT

While this great family estate in Meursault may still be under Patrick’s name, it is very much the new generation who are taking the domaine forward, with his daughter Marion and son-in-law Pierre-Emmanuel Lamy leading the charge. Patrick remains an ever-present figure, popping up around the estate, helping and gently guiding wherever he can. Pierre-Emmanuel, responsible for making the white wines, considers himself fortunate to draw on Patrick’s 45 years of experience.

This was another year in which the joy of an easy-going vintage shone on the faces of both Marion and Pierre-Emmanuel. The empty cellars of two years ago are a long and distant memory, with Marion delighting in what was another fruitful year. Sunshine and warmth ensured optimum ripening for the grapes, yet there remains a balancing freshness and a distinct notion of terroir for each wine, which highlights the mastery of Pierre-Emmanuel in his 13th year at the domaine.

Bourgogne Côte d’Or Blanc Cuvée des Forgets
£120.00 per 6 bottles IB

Of Javillier’s two Bourgogne Blancs, this is undoubtedly the most Meursault in style, where the vineyards’ clay-rich soils impart an opulence and roundness to the palate. The nose shows accents of quince and ripe pear, while there is a vibrant, almost steely quality to the palate that keeps this cuvée light on its feet. Perennially punching above its weight. Drink 2024-2028

Bourgogne Côte d’Or Blanc Cuvée Oligocène
£145.00 per 6 bottles IB

The unidentical twin of Cuvée des Forgets, Oligocène represents a much more delicate and floral style. Here the vineyards sit closer to Puligny Montrachet, where a greater limestone content results in a wine with more minerality and vivacity. With notes of ripe yellow fruit, edging slightly towards more tropical nuances, there is a delightful plumpness to the palate that is kept in check by the limestone-derived salinity. Another star. Drink 2024-2028

Meursault Clos du Cromin
£275.00 per 6 bottles IB

A combination of warm, south-east-facing slopes and clay-dominant soils means that Clos du Cromin is a more flamboyant expression of Meursault. Intensely aromatic, with notes of apricot and nectarine on the nose, the flavours are amplified on the palate, where the fruit is encased with a buttery, pie crust-esque nuance. There is breadth but, with no new oak, the wine is never excessive. Drink 2024-2030

Meursault Les Tillets
£275.00 per 6 bottles IB

Five separate parcels go into this cuvée, all of which are situated on the higher slopes of Meursault. There is a lot of rock at the top of the hill, which gives Les Tillets its signature minerality and distinguishes it from the other Meursaults in Javillier’s repertoire. Beautiful aromas of stone fruit govern the nose, while the palate shows orange pith and salted almond at its core. 30% new oak adds support to the fruit, tempering the wine’s natural salinity and adding a creaminess to the finish. Drink 2024-2030

Meursault Les Clousots
£320.00 per 6 bottles IB

The playfully named Les Clousots is not a lieu-dit in its own right, but rather a combination of two separate vineyards: Les Clous and Les Crotots. Each vineyard contributes to this classic Meursault, the former bringing depth and intensity and the latter a freshness and vitality. Orange zest and blossom can be found on the nose, while there is a delightful sweetness of fruit on the palate, swathed in silk-soft texture and delicate spice. Javillier might not have a Premier Cru, but, with its complexity and power, Les Clousots is as good as any top-level Meursault. Drink 2024-2032

Meursault Cuvée Tête de Murger
£430.00 per 6 bottles IB

Pierre-Emmanuel has a knack for blending different climats and Tête de Murger is the finest example of his skillset. Made by combining the hilly Les Casse-Têtes with Murger de Monthélie near Volnay, this is a larger-than-life Meursault, displaying complex aromatics of nectarine, kaffir lime leaves, and vanilla pod. Precise and concentrated on the palate, the oily texture and subtle spice notes give added breadth, yet the finish is refreshing and almost cooling. Simply superb. Drink 2024-2034

Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru
£1,050.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

The Javillier parcel on this great Grand Cru site showcases the exuberance that has come to be expected from a classic Corton Charlemagne. Vinified in one-year-old barrels, this is a powerful and deeply complex wine that displays generous aromas on the nose and palate. With nectarines, pecan nuts, and freshly baked brioche loaf, there is a satisfying fullness to the mid-palate before a finish of vim and vigour. A slumbering titan that will need to time to wipe the sleep from its eyes. Drink 2026-2038

DOMAINE ANTOINE JOBARD | MEURSAULT

Antoine’s father Francois’s reputation for making wines that withstood the time of age was second to none. Since Antoine took over in 1998, the wines haven’t lost any of the domaine’s hallmark for longevity, but now bear a touch of modernity. The wine’s fruit expression is a little more apparent in their youth but, maintains the potential for great mature Chardonnay complexity. His winemaking is traditional; he is keen for his wines to go through a full 12-month ageing process in cask. Before bottling and after the racking process, he allows each cuvée to finish its development partly in tank to preserve a vitality and freshness, and partly in cask to allow the wine to maintain depth and volume. His attentive nature and commitment to the very best is receiving just rewards, and so it is unsurprising that his wines are now becoming some of the most sought after from the village in Meursault around the world.

One of the biggest challenges of 2023 was the heat at harvest time, particularly if you were a later picker for the vintage. Antoine felt it was imperative to start early, on the 1st September, to maintain the vivacity in his wines. Equally, getting picking underway as early as possible each day was certainly important, making the most of the coolest day time temperatures.

Bourgogne Blanc
£150.00 per 6 bottles IB

A blend of five different parcels within the commune of Meursault, as made in 2022. We tasted just two days after bottling and it was already showing all its colours! A Meursault-esque viscosity with ripe apricot and yellow fruit flavours. Creamy and seductive, with forward drinking charm. Drink 2025-2029

Meursault
£350.00 per 6 bottles IB

This cuvée consists of 7 different parcels within the village, including the outstanding En La Barre, which Antoine historically separated out as a lieu-dit. Antoine ages this cuvée in larger 400 litre casks to minimise the interaction with the oak and its impact on the flavour profile. Rewarding sensations of mandarin and quince, the natural breadth and volume is perfectly in balance alongside a pleasing line of lively acidity on the finish. Drink 2026-2032

Meursault Blagny 1er Cru
£640.00 per 6 bottles IB

(Not tasted.) From a small combe high up at the edge of Meursault bordering the appellation of Puligny. Antoine feels its enclosed position means the fruit tends to ripen a little earlier than his other vineyards, and so is one of the first to be picked. Whilst the characteristic for the vineyard is always a degree of opulence and rich creaminess, his earlier picking policy gives a fine edge and often floral herbality to his cuvée.

Meursault Poruzots 1er Cru
£640.00 per 6 bottles IB

The northeasterly exposition of this fine Premier Cru always makes a wine with a little more reserve than traditional Meursault, and it is one of the longest keepers in the Jobard range. Surprisingly this year, it would be easy to confuse with a typical Charmes, it was so open and expressive tasting from cask. Strikingly fragrant, with its roasted nut, almond and hazelnut personality. An enticing silky rich volume, with some sweet and sour kumquat and Seville orange characters on the finish. Creamy and long and almost demanding to be drunk immediately! Drink 2025-2035

Meursault 1er Cru Charmes
£645.00 per 6 bottles IB

Aromatically striking, with an assortment of fruit salad nuances: lychee, kiwi and watermelon. On the palate it is less silky than some years, with a degree of earthy terroir reserve. This has firmness of structure and gives the impression that this is a wine which will go on for the long term. Drink 2026-2035

Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières
£1,195.00 per 6 bottles IB

The Jobard plot within this great Premier Cru is instantly recognisable by its famed cabotte which sits in the middle of his vineyards. He prices it at a Grand Cru level as, in his view, this is where it stands in quality over and above the other cuvées in his cellar. A perfume of white peach and yellow plum. It is pitch perfect in its balance between an intensely rich generosity, grace and vigorous freshness. The flavours linger forever, and it just exudes class. Drink 2026-2035

Volnay Village
£265.00 per 6 bottles IB

From a single parcel, Les Combes, sitting alongside Pommard. Antoine destalks all the fruit from this vineyard and is looking for a high degree of Pinot purity. Light red brick colour, it is a fresh and appealing style with open red cherry and plum flavours. The tannins are soft and subtle. This is a wine to appreciate in its youth. Drink 2025-2035

Beaune Rouge 1er Cru Montrevenot
£265.00 per 6 bottles IB

Bordering Pommard, this is a more powerfully structured Beaune than many reds in the appellation. A bouquet of spice and nutmeg overlays the more savoury Victoria plum characters underneath. A degree of tannic depth precedes the sweetness of black fruits coming through on the finish. Drink 2026-2034

Pommard 1er Cru Les Epenots
£465.00 per 6 bottles IB

From the sector known as Les Petits Epenots, which is recognised for making a fine, poised style of Pommard. A brilliant scarlet red colour, this has an array of red fruits: raspberry, pomegranate and cherry. The red soil minerality is present, giving tension and structure and the fine core of fruit provides impact and complexity on the finish.  Drink 2027-2038

CHÂTEAU DE MEURSAULT | MEURSAULT

This fine property has gone through some very exciting developments under the direction of Stéphane Follin-Arbelet, whose family own a highly respected domaine in Aloxe Corton. The vineyards under the Château’s ownership cover an extraordinary 65 hectares, from Savigny Lès Beaune through to Meursault. In 2022 the estate was certified as fully organic, which is an achievement for a domaine of this size. Against the backdrop of the property’s historical origins, with Cistercian cellars dating back to the 12th century, this dynamic domaine is investing extensively in both the vineyards and the winery, reaching new heights in quality.

Stéphane and winemaker Emmanuel Escutenaire were delighted with the quality of the fruit coming in at harvest time. Wanting to focus on the purity of fruit, they destalked 100% of the bunches for the reds, followed by a period of cold maceration in advance of very gentle vinification and maceration. The white wines have gone through 12 months barrel élevage ahead of bottling, capturing the sunny fruit flavours which are so much of the expression of the domaine’s wines this year.

Bourgogne Clos Du Chateau Blanc
£175.00 per 6 bottles IB

Found within the commune of Meursault, just a stone’s throw from the appellational limits, this is a refined Bourgogne Blanc. With lemon zest and pineapple notes on the nose, the palate has an oily richness to it, which works wonderfully with the vanilla and buttered croissant flavours, as well as the subtle sweetness of fresh apricot. There is good grip and freshness here that makes it ideal for earlier drinking. Drink 2024-2027.

Meursault Du Chateau Blanc
£330.00 per 6 bottles IB

Made up of four different plots, which sit just below the Château, this is the property’s signature wine and is a superb example of Meursault. Starting with delicate touches of jasmine blossom, there are equally aromatic notes of nectarine and Chantilly cream stirring beneath. The palate displays lovely ripeness, where a silk-soft texture is stitched with flavours of toasted oak and light spice on the finish. Drink 2025-2034.

Meursault 1er Cru Charmes Dessus
£495.00 per 6 bottles IB

Made from 3 hectares of estate-owned vines on the upper slopes, this wine has a greater degree of definition and more mineral energy than wines from further below. Balancing light floral aromas with a hazelnut-cream richness, the palate has wonderful depth.A millefeuille of lemon curd, orange oil, and vanilla essence, make this such an effortlessly charming and delectable wine. More unctuous than previous years, the hallmark limestone-derived minerality on the finish is there in abundance. Drink 2025-2035.

Meursault 1er Cru Perrieres
£630.00 per 6 bottles IB

This cuvée comes from a single hectare on the boundary of Puligny, and so has the pristine purity that you would expect from such a location. This is the liveliest of the Château’s Meursaults in 2023, combining pink grapefruit with riper notes of apricot on the nose. The palate also has verve, with a sherbet-inspired energy that makes it so moreishly mouthwatering. Over a few years, the wine will settle and reveal its more composed side. A wine with immense potential. Drink 2026-2038.

Volnay Clos Des Chenes 1er Cru
£340.00 per 6 bottles IB

This particular Premier Cru site has white marble terroir which gives the wine its powerful and personality, often reticent-in-youth. Higher up in the appellation of Volnay, Clos des Chenes receives plenty of sunlight resulting in a riper, more concentrated style. 2023 is typical of this, showing tremendous depth of flavours, with notes of blackberry and black cherry fruit chaperoned by an earthiness and structured tannins on the palate. With up to 35% new oak, there’s a density and weight but the freshness is there throughout. Drink 2028-2038.

Pommard Clos Des Epenots 1er Cru
£495.00 per 6 bottles IB

Made in the same way as the domaine’s Volnay, this is another powerful wine from Ch de Meursault. The nose shows some levity however, where crystalline cranberry notes are lifted by a fragrant, herbal character. The tannins are present but have a tenderness to them, while the proportion of new oak adds delicate spice in the form of cloves and cinnamon. Typical Pommard power but with plenty of elegance. Drink 2028-2038.

Corton Les Marechaudes Grand Cru
£875.00 per 6 bottles IB

The Domaine owns a substantial 1.5 hectares of this steep Grand Cru site. Right from the off, all the indicators that this is a wine of immense complexity are there. The nose is brimming with summer fruit aromas, which are kept in check by nuanced notes of vanilla-infused smoke and cedar wood. No doubt there is power on the palate, but the delicately chalky tannins and sweetness of fruit mean that there is an elegance and restraint to the wine too. The finish is remarkably persistent with mouth-watering acidity and vibrant red fruited accents. Drink 2028-2040.

ETIENNE SAUZET | PULIGNY MONTRACHET

Founded by Etienne Sauzet in the early 1900s, the vineyard land of this family domaine has passed down the generations. Today the family interests of 15 hectares are managed by Etienne’s great granddaughter, Emilie, and her husband Benoît Riffault, who originates from Sancerre and has white winemaking in his blood.

Certified as biodynamic in 2013, their winemaking style is to ferment the juice in cask giving the wines a 12-month maturation on their yeast lees. The wine is then transferred into stainless steel tanks, still on the lees, for a further 6 months before bottling. The domaine has followed this system for many years, which is becoming increasingly popular, as many believe that it both enhances the richness of fruit and preserves the true elegance and fruit purity of Puligny Montrachet. 2023 was another early harvest for the domaine, starting on 28th August, before the acid levels dropped, keeping vivacity and brightness in their wines. Benoît likens the style of vintage to his excellent 2011 wines.

Bourgogne La Tuféra
£145.00 per 6 bottles IB

From vineyards just outside the appellational boundaries of Puligny Montrachet, but within the commune of the village, this is always a charming Bourgogne Blanc. A bright floral scent, with hints of jasmine and lime zest. A forward easy style, with flavours of melon and white nectarine and a gentle rounded finish. Drink 2025-2029

Puligny Montrachet

The Sauzet village Puligny is made from 12 parcels, the majority of which comes from Les Meix just beside the superb Premier Cru Pucelles vineyard, one of the finest locations in the appellation. An enticing combination of pink grapefruit, lemon sherbet and a lick of acacia honey. Silky smooth on the palate, with a velvety texture and a rewarding finish of hot buttered toast and coffee bean. Drink 2025-2031

Chassagne Montrachet Les Encégnières
£325.00 per 6 bottles IB

Sitting just below Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru, this is arguably the village’s most highly regarded lieu-dit within its classification. Floral aromatics of jasmine, and a citrus hint of lime zest and lemon ice. A tight and compact mid palate, with a firmer Bâtard-esque mid-palate in comparison to the Puligny. This has muscle, with a creamy pannacotta finish. Drink 2026-2032

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne
£550.00 per 6 bottles IB

La Garenne sits on the higher slopes of Puligny and produces a remarkably harmonious wine, often earlier drinking than some other wines from this commune. The 55-year-old vines, lend themselves to making a very composed wine, with strikingly intense flavours. A marriage of quince, lime and yellow stone fruit, in a direct and structured style. A very rewarding impression of seashore salinity, both refreshing and cleansing on the palate. Wonderful persistence on the finish. Drink 2026-2032

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Gain
£295.00 per 3 bottles IB

Drink 2026-2035

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts
£295.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

Near the border of Meursault, Referts soil is a mix of clay and stones. It is renowned for making one of Puligny’s more powerfully structured Premiers Crus. Brilliant lemon-yellow colour, a truly excellent cuvée balancing the initial impression of exotic fruits, guava and mango with a tighter orange peel finish. A tremendously weighted wine with a strong finish of dry extract and appealing zesty lift. It has all the credentials of Grand Cru in all but name. Drink 2026-2036

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières
£345.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

Les Perrières’ thin topsoil and dense limestone subsoil typically produces very mineral wines with laser-like focus. Lemon citrus and bitter Seville orange scent leap from the glass. A tight and linear style, with a strong sense of limestone minerality. Taut and firm, showing a wine with great intent and seriousness. This will benefit from a period of bottle age. Extremely serious in style, diametrically opposite to the Champ-Gains and so, so long on the finish. Drink 2026-2035

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes
£365.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

DOMAINE LAMY-PILLOT |
CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET

Domaine Lamy-Pillot is exciting new introduction to our fine selection of Chassagne-Montrachet producers in the 2023 En Primeur campaign. Bringing together two VIP names of the Côte de Beaune, the domaine was founded by René Lamy, whose brother Hubert Lamy’s estate is situated in St Aubin. René cut his teeth at the famed Duc de Magenta estate, the most significant owners of Le Montrachet vineyard, before focusing his full attention on his own vineyards in the mid-1970s. Today, this fine 15-hectare estate is run by his two daughters and their husbands; Florence and Sebastien focusing on the vineyards and winery, whilst Karine and her husband Daniel look after the commercial business.

Florence and Sebastien’s preferred style is for wines of thoughtful restraint. Subtlety is the name of the game here, and they are a joy to taste. These are white wines with great energy and parcel identity. They are also an exciting estate for red wines, upholding the village’s reputation for making excellent Pinot Noir with a particularly fine holding in the well respected Morgeot vineyard. Commenting on the character of the vintage, Sebastien compares his 2023 wines to his 2018s, but he feels the wines have a greater freshness and an overall liveliness, making this a vintage with great purpose.

St Aubin 1er Cru Le Charmois
£235.00 per 6 bottles IB

The Lamy-Pillot family has half a hectare of this prestigious Premier Cru, sitting on the border of Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Le Chaumée. The white stone fruit and jasmine scent intertwine perfectly alongside the herbal mint and thyme characters. This is so inviting, with notes of pannacotta and guernsey cream, and a rewarding lift of zesty freshness on the finish. Drink 2025-2031

A striking nose of almonds and pistachio, with a hint of freshly buttered toast. Very giving on the palate, with flavours of peach and nectarine, and a rich, rewarding finish. Drink 2025-2031

Chassagne Montrachet Pot Bois
£265.00 per 6 bottles IB

The family are the largest owners of this well regarded lieu dit, which sits on one of the highest locations in the village above the highly esteemed Premier Cru Cailleret. The cooler, easterly facing slopes allow the wine to balance a feeling of exotic fruit generosity and fresh lemon sorbet zing. Extremely refreshing, with a touch of stony salinity on the finish. Drink 2026-2032

Chassagne Montrachet 1er La Boudriotte
£360.00 per 6 bottles IB

This is the domaine’s first vintage for this cuvée as a white as a lieu die within Premier Cru Morgeot. A tighter more tensile version than the fuller and more ostentatious Morgeot. Brimming with yellow fruits, underpinned by structured dry matter texture, with a long, firm finish. Drink 2026-2035

St Aubin 1er Cru Les Combes

DOMAINE COFFINET-DUVERNAY |
CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET

In our view this fine domaine is an unsung hero from the village of Chassagne Montrachet, partly due to its youth. The domine was only founded in the mid-1980s, following the marriage of Philippe Duvernay from Rully in the Côte Chalonnaise and Laura Coffinet, a member of one of the most established families in Chassagne. Together they have created an enviable 7-hectare Domaine with, unusually, all their vineyard holdings exclusively in just one commune: Chassagne Montrachet, with some of the finest sites the appellation has to offer.

Their son Bastien Duvernay’s winemaking philosophy is one of minimal intervention. He claims a slight preference for his 2023s over the 2022 vintage. He feels the generosity of the harvest has given his wines a stronger terroir identity this year, harvesting at the end of the first week of September. His policy was to encourage the natural rise in cellar temperature in springtime to let the lees enrich and feed their wines, complimenting the ripe fruit characters of the year and giving breadth and individuality to his wines.

Chassagne Montrachet
£235.00 per 6 bottles IB

The fruit for this excellent cuvée comes from 3 separate plots, one near Puligny, a central parcel and the third by the Premier Cru Champs Gain.  An easy approachable wine, rounded, succulent giving flavours of baguette and popcorn with an earthy, terroir feeling on the finish. Drink 2025-2029

Chassagne Montrachet Blanchots Dessous
£270.00 per 6 bottles IB

Sitting alongside Criots Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru, Bastien and Philippe feel the characteristics of Blanchots Dessous are so distinctive and so good that they merit bottling separately to the rest of their village parcels. A full and giving style, characters of toffee apple and clotted cream topped scones. A more distinctive mid-palate structure, with a layered minerality texture and fine, long persistent flavours. Drink 2026-2031

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Clos St Jean
£310.00 per 6 bottles IB

The Clos St Jean vineyard sits high up on the Chassagne hillside and, as a cooler location, one expects a drive of minerality in this wine, and that palate shows a racy saline bite reflecting its location. Full of limoncello and freshly squeezed limes, it is so pure and upliftingly refreshing. The weight of fruit provides its impact on the finish, with a sensation of grape extract giving muscle and longevity. Drink 2026-2032

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Maltroie
£310.00 per 6 bottles IB

This Premier Cru sits plumb in the middle of the appellation, producing a flamboyant, confident wine. Enticing aromas of crème anglaise and exotic mango. A full and concentrated cuvée, with a touch of nutmeg spice and great intensity. Drink 2025-2031

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champgains
£310.00 per 6 bottles IB

This warm mid-slope site typically lends itself to making deep and full wines, and the 2023 highlights all these characteristics to perfection.  A melange of yellow fruit flavours, buttered croissant and fresh walnut. A very full wine with great body and longevity. Drink 2025-2032

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Les Grands Clos
£310.00 per 6 bottles IB

A very fine parcel within the Premier Cru Morgeot, this is a classical example of Premier Cru Chassagne, with a texture and earthy rusticity that produces a bold and confident wine that still manages to express excellent tension and vitality. Flavours of lemon zest and bitter orange, tightly woven with depth and a feeling of tannic structure. Refrain from drinking too early. Drink 2027-2035

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Fairendes
£350.00 per 6 bottles IB

Fairendes is a lieu-dit within the better-known Premier Cru of Morgeot and the Coffinets bottle this plot separately. Bastien feels it is so graceful and poised that its unique quality would be lost if included in their other parcel of Morgeot. This has become a real favourite of ours. Its sense of charm and refinement stood out at our tasting at the Coffinet Duvernay cellars. With soft poached pear and almond flavours, it combines its subtle delicacy with a mouth-watering salinity.  This is class in a glass. Drink 2026-2032

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets
£460.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

At almost 80 years’ old, this is the Domaine’s oldest vineyard within this fine, chalky stone-based location. A small but prized vineyard for the domaine, this is so full of mineral energy, with a very direct fragrance of Seville orange and lemon sherbet. Linear and mineral reflecting the impact of the stony soil nature of the vineyard. The breadth and weight build on the palate, giving a feeling of tension ahead of a rewarding finish of kumquat and greengage. Tremendous poise and self-assurance. Drink 2026-2034

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Blanchots Dessus
£265.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

This extraordinary Premier Cru parcel is the envy of all the growers in the village: a unique plot of vines just below the great Le Montrachet! It has all the volume of its famed neighbour, a full and broad style with flavours of apricot and nectarine sitting comfortably alongside nutty, creamy sweetness. No shortage of power, with an almost tannic dry extract finish. A brilliant wine all round. Drink 2026-2033

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Dent de Chien
£595.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

An enviable Premier Cru of just 1.17 hectares, sitting on the south-westerly side of Grand Cru Le Montrachet. The Coffinets are the largest owners in the appellation and their style is one for others to aspire to. Initially a little reserved in its attack, reflecting the wines overall weight and need to progress in bottle. There is tension and earthy Chassagne structure here, and its brooding power is just waiting to escape. Superb. Drink 2026-2033

Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru
£950.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

From the Chassagne side of this great Grand Cru, this Bâtard Montrachet has a degree of earthy strength. The warmth of the 2023 vintage has allowed this wine to excel in its terroir identity. Striking exotic fruit aromas are met on the palate with a drizzle of warm crème anglaise and lemon curd.  Broad and rich, the roasted hazelnut characters give a misleading sensation of sweetness ahead of the wines mouth-watering, seashell finish. A beautiful Grand Cru. Drink 2027-2037

DOMAINE BRUNO COLIN | CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET

The village of Chassagne Montrachet has many long-established family names on its CV, but none more so than Colin. Whether under their own name or by marriage, they are interconnected with just about all the great houses in the appellation. Bruno’s inheritance comes from the Colin-Deleger stable, giving him an enviable portfolio of 22 appellations, covering 8.75 hectares. His first vintage was back in 1993, working with his father before setting up on his own in 2004.

Whilst many domaines in the Côte d’Or have had a very large harvest in 2023, this is not the case at Domaine Bruno Colin. Bruno explains that the reason for this is that his vineyard holdings have a considerable number of old vines, which never produce excessive yields due to their age. As a result, he has ended up with a volume at the same level as the 2022 vintage, and wines with high levels of concentration and complexity. His policy of 12 months cask aging followed by 6 months in tank allows his whites to develop wonderful aromatics, with a deliciously ripe flavour profile in 2023.

La Maltroie is a Premier Cru that always makes its presence felt, characterised by its breadth and generous fruit. The palate is authoritative however, with a compellingly earthy, terroir-driven personality, offering rewarding flavours of banoffee pie and hazelnut and a classy lift of freshness at the end. Drink 2026-2034

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot
£440.00 per 6 bottles IB

Morgeot is the largest Premier Cru in the Côte d’Or at 58 hectares, surpassing even Clos Vougeot (51 hectares). Unsurprisingly therefore, there is a huge variety of styles and quality levels. Coming from 60-year-old vines planted in 1963, Bruno’s parcel is at the forefront of quality for the appellation. With flamboyant aromas of pineapple and grapefruit, the palate is characterised by flavours of buttered toast with a focused core of grape extract, giving substance and depth. Drink 2026-2035

Chassagne Montrachet
1er Cru Les Chenevottes
£430.00 per 6 bottles IB

The historical site of an old hemp field, this is a slightly cooler location amongst the Chassagne Premiers Crus and therefore creates wines with natural energy and brightness. This is one of Bruno’s smallest cuvées, so volumes are carefully restricted. With exotic fruit aromas of kiwi and melon, the wine builds carefully on the palate, giving the impression of muscle and strength, with lots of indulgent cream and warm brioche flavours. Confident and bold, with great persistence on the finish. Drink 2026-2034

Chassagne Montrachet
1er Cru La Boudriotte

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru En Remilly

There is nothing ostentatious, possessing the perfect balance between minerality, energy and subtle yet concentrated fruit depth. Drink 2026-2037

Chassagne Montrachet
1er Cru Blanchot-Dessus
£880.00 per 6 bottles IB

The envy of the village, this vineyard sits between Le Montrachet and Criots Bâtard Montrachet and is just over 1 hectare in size. Bruno is one of seven lucky growers to have a piece of the action. The 2023 has a noticeable amount of Bâtard exuberance and self-confidence. A beautifully balanced array of flavours: exotic fruits, warm croissant and baked apple. Extremely concentrated with a long nutmeg and roasted nut finish. Drink 2027-2035

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru La Truffière
£740.00 per 6 bottles IB

La Truffière is Bruno’s only vineyard in Puligny Montrachet. Situated just below the hamlet of Blagny, it takes its name from the Burgundy truffle which flourished here historically when vineyards were less prolific. Classically Puligny in nature, combining fine white floral fruit with lemon and lime zest, with a warming, honeyed silkiness. Tremendous purity and length. Drink 2026-2036

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Demoiselles
£560.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

The favourite wine of Bruno’s father Michel, this Puligny’s rarest Premier Cru within the exceptional Cailleret locality, situated just below Grand Cru Chevalier Montrachet. The initial impression is floral and delicate, with notes of jasmine, peony and citron pressé. The honeyed delicacy evolves on the palate, fine and ethereal, with a gorgeous mouth-watering freshness. This is a beauty. Drink 2027-2037

Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru
£730.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

Bruno buys in the fruit for this cuvée giving him 5 casks in total. Golden yellow colour, a very open wine in its youth showing flavours of spice, clotted cream and freshly baked baguette. A full and striking Grand Cru wine, with great layers of concentration and a warming honeyed finish. Drink 2026-2036

Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru
£535.00 per single bottle IB
(On Allocation)

Despite the warmth of the vintage this is a more reserved Bâtard than some years; still opulent, but not excessive. A melange of yellow fruits sits perfectly alongside the creamy pannacotta charm. The flavours have a Bâtard richness and fullness, sweet, fresh buttered croissant, and a lift of mandarin freshness on the finish. Gloriously appealing. Drink 2026-2038

Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru
£900.00 per single bottles IB
(On Allocation)

The vines were planted by Bruno’s grandfather in 1962. Chevalier should never be ostentatious; it is a charming and subtly supple wine. Bruno’s 2023 is the perfect ambassador for the appellation. Light lime with a tinge of lemon yellow in the glass. Aromatics of lemon sherbet and sorbet. A graceful and silky wine, with subtle notes of acacia honey, with a finish of lively acidity providing tension and class. Brilliant! Drink 2027 -2038

DOMAINE MARC COLIN |
CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET

Brother and sister Damien and Caroline make a formidable team running this fifth generation estate and its enviable collection of 12 hectares of vineyards in the communes of St Aubin and Chassagne. The benefits of their new and larger wine making facilities are ever present in the quality of their 2023 wines. The additional space allows them to rack and bottle their wines later than previous years, guaranteeing their preferred 18-month élevage before bottling; 12 in cask contributing to the weight and depth in their wines, followed by a further 6 on lees in vat which, in Damien’s view, improves the sense of precision on the wines.

“An easy year” was Damien’s description of the 2023 growing season in St Aubin. With no hail and no frost, they were able to keep on top the small risk of disease. An easy flowering period ensured healthy grape production, and the water reserves remained good throughout the year, meaning the vines didn’t suffer any hydric stress and so supported a good number of berries and bunches during the all-important veraison. Caroline and Damien’s wish for a more precise style meant that they picked early, starting on 1st September, something they were very relieved to have done as heat arrived and daytime temperatures rose rapidly as the weeks progressed. The striking impression of their 2023 selection is of wines with an appealing warmth of fruit, but fine freshness.

St Aubin 1er Cru Les Castets
£225.00 per 6 bottles IB

The last of St Aubin’s Premiers Crus as you leave it heading northwest, Les Castets is perfectly positioned to support Damien’s theory of the benefits of appellation’s cooler location, whilst benefitting from a healthy southerly exposure. A fragrance of melons and apricots. A confident, free flowing style, with creamy toffee infused notes and rewarding richness, harmonised by its linear precision on the finish. Classy. Drink 2025-2030

St Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly
£285.00 per 6 bottles IB

The growers in St Aubin like to think of this as their little Grand Cru due to its very special location above Chevalier Montrachet. Domaine Marc Colin has five different parcels on the hillside which they blend together after the completion of vinification. A vineyard with almost no topsoil, producing a wine that is so full of youthful vibrance. The nose presents an array of citrus fruits: lemon, lime and grapefruit. Damien’s early picking policy protected the vines from heat stress and has preserved all the freshness and poise for which the vineyard is famed, with a delightfully honeyed, silky finish. Glorious. Drink 2026-2032

Chassagne Montrachet Cuvée Margot
£285.00 per 6 bottles IB

Named after Damien’s grandmother Margot who was the source of his and Caroline’s prized Le Montrachet vineyard. A more refined style of Chassagne, coming from four separate locations on the Puligny side of the appellation.  Lime zest and clementine, a very approachable wine, with a silky melon texture and the breadth of fruit sitting comfortably alongside a subtle tensile finish. Drink 2025-2031

Puligny Montrachet Les Enseignières
£285.00 per 6 bottles IB

Whilst Enseignières is a prized village location sitting just below the great Bienvenues Bâtard Montrachet, Damien says their cuvée’s real merit is that the vines are 70 years old, and it is this which gives the wine its quality and depth. A wine of beauty and harmony that exemplifies the more melodious style of wines from the appellation. Honeyed, with soft pear and tarte tatin characters, this is silky smooth with a delicious, honeyed finish. Superb.  Drink 2025-2031

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs Gains
£405.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

A very clean expression of this warm, mid-sloped Premier Cru. Aromas of pineapple and exotic fruits lift from the glass. With rewarding, soft cream and pannacotta notes, this is a little more refined and reserved than some vintages at this early stage, but finely structured, and clearly has lots of bottle aging potential.  Drink 2027-2032

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes
£405.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

One of Chassagne’s last Premiers Crus before you arrive at St Aubin. It combines the earthy structure of Chassagne with its neighbour’s racy tension. From such a small plot, the domaine has just 2 casks in total, making it a real rarity. An opening salvo of jasmine and peony gives way to more exotic characters of guava and kiwi. Juicy and broad o the palate, with subtle fresh croissant notes on the finish. Lovely. Drink 2026-2031

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vide Bourses
£240.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)

Only 1.3 hectares, Les Vide Bourses has a reputation for being one of Chassagne’s boldest and most generous Premier Crus; not a surprise for a vineyard which is a terroir extension of Bâtard Grand Cru. The blood orange aromas combine perfectly with notes of brioche, buttered crumpet and pecan nut underpinned by a hint of smoky vanilla oak that gives a sensation of sweetness and volume on the finish. Self-confidently hedonistic, this is very lovely. Drink 2026-2033

DOMAINE JUSTIN GIRARDIN | SANTENAY

The Girardin family and their wines embody the truest values of a classic Burgundian domaine. The family history dates back to 1570 and their vineyard holding of 17 hectares represents a sizeable estate in Burgundian terms, reflecting the family’s standing and position in the southern end of the Côte de Beaune. The young and extremely talented Justin, now in his early 30s, assumed total control in 2015 and his wines continue to get better and better with each year.

Justin’s policy is for minimum levels of intervention in the winery, all made possible by his meticulously attentive vineyard management techniques. He is a man of the soil and has a reputation for being the first out on a cold winter’s morning, tending his vines as dawn breaks. The ripeness of the vintage is apparent in this superb range, which will offer delicious earlier drinking.

Santenay Blanc Les Terrasses de Bievaux
£130.00 per 6 bottles IB

The steeply terraced slopes of Bievaux are naturally cool, which gives this wine excellent freshness, even in warmer years. The nose displays crystalline fruit, with notes of lemon zest and nectarines, while the palate possesses wonderful textural richness with a tarte citron complexity on the finish. This year, Justin kept the wine in oak for two months longer than normal to retain the balance and expression of previous iterations. Drink 2024-2028

Meursault
£240.00 per 6 bottles IB

Floral notes of jasmine and rose petal distract from the overall weight and natural Meursault richness that sits beautifully beneath this fine village cuvée. An approachable wine giving much youthful pleasure. Drink 2025-2030

Meursault Les Clous
£265.00 per 6 bottles IB

From a parcel that sits just above the Premier Cru vineyard sites, Les Clous is revered for balancing complexity with approachability. The nose displays the warmth of the vintage, with pastry crust and ripe peach notes combined with aromas of buttered toast. The palate has breadth and textural weight that is borne aloft by a steely energy on the finish. Drink 2024-2032

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot
£445.00 per 6 bottles IB

Morgeot is the largest Premier Cru in the village of Chassagne Montrachet with many subdivisions and a variety of expressions. Girardin’s interpretation is one of aromatic intensity and textural elegance. The nose balances citrus notes of lemon zest and kaffir lime leaves with touches of toast and salted almonds. The palate displays more ripeness in the form of white peaches and lemon curd, yet there is mineral drive throughout, which adds structure and power to an already luxurious wine. Simply superb. Drink 2024-2035

Santenay Rouge 1er Cru Clos Rousseau
£135.00 per 6 bottles IB
£155.00 per 3 magnums IB

High up on the southern boundary of the Santenay appellation, this is a relatively cool vineyard, which flourished once again in 2023. Beautifully perfumed, the wine shows drops of red cherry, cranberries, and a touch of blackberry fruit, while there is a delicate smokiness that comes through. On the palate, there is tension and power, which is balanced by wonderful freshness and a cranberry tartness on the finish. This is already so approachable but will no doubt age gracefully over time. Drink 2024-2034

Savigny Les Beaune Rouge 1er Cru Les Peuillets
£145.00 per 6 bottles IB

‘Thank you for visiting Savigny’ should read the sign at Les Peuillets, the final Premier Cru vineyard before arriving at the slopes of Beaune. Here the warm, sandy soils produce an affable style of wine and Girardin is the master of such expression. There is a plushness to the wine, where sweet black cherry and bramble fruit is paired with toasted oak and delicate floral notes. With 10 months in barrel, the tannins are fine-grained, while there is terrific freshness and a pink peppercorn spice to the finish. Drink 2024-2035

DOMAINE ELODIE ROY | CHEILLY-LES-MARANGES

After studying law at university and working in banking for a number of years, Elodie decided that the corporate world was not for her and that she wanted to forge a career as a winemaker. At the time, it wasn’t practical for Elodie to return to the family domaine, which had been developed by her grandfather Robert and her father Pierre. She therefore sought opportunities further north in the Côte de Nuits, where she spent 11 years assisting Anne Gros in Vosne Romanée. After this enviable apprenticeship, Elodie returned to the family domaine in 2018, taking over their 10 hectares in Maranges, the most southerly appellation of the Côte de Beaune.

As her vineyards sit on slopes with varied exposures, Elodie chooses to pick later than many vignerons across the appellation. Whilst advantageous from a quality perspective, there is a further benefit to this approach; Elodie is able to recruit hard-to-find, highly skilled harvesters to pick her fruit once they have finished the harvest in nearby Meursault and Puligny. With her extensive Côtes de Nuits experience and relentless focus on quality, Elodie has made a considerable mark on this domaine, taking the wines to the next level and putting Maranges firmly on the map.

Bourgogne Pinot Noir
£105.00 per 6 Bottles IB

The fruit for this cuvée comes from vines planted in a clay-dominant vineyard at the edge of Maranges in 1963. With fragrant, fresh notes of red cherry and cranberry, this pretty cuvée has immediate appeal. Ripe, gentle tannins add a line of structure to this rounded, soft and eminently approachable Pinot, while a hint of bitter cocoa brings a savoury note to the finish. Drink 2025 – 2032

Maranges La Rue des Pierres
£120.00 per 6 Bottles IB

The vines for this village-level cuvée were planted in 1972 in vineyards bordering the commune of Santenay. The 2023 is still a little shy, but opens up in the glass to reveal lush notes of Morello cherry and grenadine wrapped in savoury, toasted oak. Clear, mineral-laced acidity and finely grained tannins bring poise and a light-touch structure to this charming wine. Drink 2025 – 2032

Maranges Les Goty
£130.00 per 6 Bottles IB

This vineyard sits immediately over the road and underneath three Premiers Crus sites: Le Clos Roussots, Clos de la Boutière and Petit Clos Rousseau. Elodie’s Le Goty vines produce small, intensely flavoursome berries, which she believes show their best with whole bunch fermentation. 50% of the 2023 was vinified in this way, producing a deliciously fragrant wine that sings with notes of lusciously ripe black cherries, raspberry coulis and a hint of freshly ground black pepper. Broad, fleshy fruit sweetness gives a lovely volume to the wine’s core, which is gently encased by tannins with a pleasing, chalky grip. A bright line of freshness enlivens the lightly spiced finish. Drink 2026 – 2034.

Santenay 1er Cru Les Gravières
£160.00 per 6 Bottles IB

In the 19th century, the vineyards of Santenay were prized above those of Côte de Nuits appellations such as Vosne Romanée. Although the commune has since been overlooked in favour of its northerly neighbours, Les Gravières continues to enjoy its reputation as the best-known Premier Cru in Santenay. The light, stony soils implied in the name, coupled with old vines planted in 1952, have produced an excellent wine this vintage. With beguiling notes of Morello cherry and pomegranate, accompanied by a whisp of dried wild herbs, this Pinot entices from the outset. Relaxed and already very open, the generous fruit sweetness is underpinned by elegant, refined tannins and a lift of stone-driven acidity. Drink 2026 – 2036.
