Burgundy En Primeur
2023 Chablis
Goedhuis Waddesdon
Life as Chablisien vigneron can be a nerve racking experience to say the least. The rolling hills of the Yonne are at the most northerly limit of Burgundy’s enviable array of white wine vineyards, and as such, growers are often at the mercy of climatic extremes and challenges. In 2023, the Sun Gods shone, giving a harvest of abundance and stylistic appeal. But what a difference a year can make; in 2024, the frost and meteorological challenges have meant that some growers they have next to no crop to sell in the next En Primeur campaign.
All the growers we visited commented on the ease of the year in 2023; they felt relaxed and so too did the vines! The 2023 winter was mild and whilst there were some fleetingly sharp frosts at the end of March, the buds escaped any serious damage. The steady rise in temperatures in May set the vineyards up for a quick and perfect flowering in early June. July set a reminder that growers shouldn’t get complacent as temperatures dropped with intermittent rainfall, but sunny conditions returned in August, with a lift of warm weather throughout harvest time up to around 20th September.
The result is a beautiful selection of wines, from AC Chablis all the way up to the finest Grands Crus. These wines do not have the scissor-sharpness of a cold vintage; they are charming and appealing, balancing a subtle richness with carefully integrated appellational seashore freshness, sitting quietly beneath all the seductive fruit flavours of the vintage. There is no doubting that the flattering appeal of 2023 will give early drinking pleasure, but the finest Crus will age alongside some of the appellations very best.
We are delighted that the growers have made the prudent decision to maintain all prices at the same level as the previous vintage. Knowing how little wine there will be in 2024, the 2023 vintage gives the perfect opportunity to seek out new discoveries and old favourites across the board.

Domaine Jean Paul & Benoît Droin
DOMAINE POMMIER | POINCHY
In 1990, Denis and Isabelle took over 2 hectares of family land outside the town of Chablis. Today, through astuteness and hard work, they have developed the domaine to encompass 23 hectares of high-quality vineyards, all benefiting from their organic philosophy practiced since 2014. Their style is to create fruit-forward wines, a little less focused on a firm mineral bite and more on graceful volume. They always maintain a classical Chablis freshness, combining well with floral and exotic Chardonnay flavours.
2023 was an easy-going growing season for the domaine’s organic approach, with disease kept to a minimum. In Denis’ view, the wines were saved by the healthy yields which protected the vines from the harvest-time heat spike around 11th September. This also enabled them to maintain a surprising degree of freshness, thanks to the low levels of malic acid in the berries at harvest time. The 2023 vintage offers a beautiful example of the Domaine’s rewarding and pleasing style of Chablis.
Chablis
£95.00 per 6 bottles IB
100% vinification in stainless steel tank. With scents of quince and kumquat, this is an easy and free-flowing wine on the palate. The generous, silky volume is balanced by a touch of tart mineral extract on the finish. Classically appealing. Drink 2025-2027
Chablis 1er Cru Côte de Léchet
£155.00 per 6 bottles IB
From a 1-hectare plot of 60-year-old vines, this is a flagship cuvée for the domaine. Denis uses a cautious amount of oak during the élevage process to allow the vineyard’s natural finesse to shine through. This is joyously charming in character, with aromas of yellow stone fruit, hints of clementine sweetness and a Seville orange peel twang. Bright and full of energy. Drink 2026-2031
DOMAINE PINSON | CHABLIS
The Pinsons trace their roots in Chablis back to 1640, rivalling the Droin family as one of the oldest in town. Historical records from 1880 detail Louis Pinson selling bottles of their wine under the family label. Today, brothers Laurent and Christophe, along with Laurent’s daughter Charlene, oversee the estate, which boasts an impressive 12 hectares of vineyards, including 2.5 hectares of Les Clos and 4.75 hectares of Mont de Milieu.
The domaine has a commitment to strong traditional values, opting for hand harvesting. While certain cuvées undergo a period of barrel aging, it's always in casks between 2-5 years old, never in new oak. Reflecting on the 2023 vintage, Laurent and Charlene spoke of the relatively hassle-free year. All the wines we tasted (except for Grand Cru Les Clos) were bottled at the end of summer, and all showcased the restrained Chablisien character typical of this family’s delightful wines.
Chablis 1er Cru Montmains
£160.00 per 6 bottles IB
With 65-year-old vines on a mixture of limestone and blue clay soils, the southeast-facing vineyards in Montmains yield a nicely rounded style, marked by distinct minerality. The nose displays blossom and ripe orchard fruit in the form of golden apples and Conference pear, with delicate notes of dry toasted hazelnut. While there is some textural richness, the wine has a flinty core that is like a needle through velvet. One for the Chablis purist. Drink 2025-2032
Chablis 1er Cru La Foret
£160.00 per 6 bottles IB
Sitting alongside Montmains, the soils of La Foret contain more stone and less clay than their Premier Cru neighbour, resulting in a sprier style of wine. A warmer 2023 vintage has given the perennially lean and lively Chablis added textural richness, while notes of apricot, white peach, and salted almonds govern the nose and palate, before giving way to an almost sherbet-enlivening finish. This is classic Chablis full of vim and vigour. Drink 2025-2030.
Chablis 1er Cru La Fourchaume
£165.00 per 6 bottles IB
One of the better-known Premiers Crus vineyards, the right bank Fourchaume faces south-west, yielding a richer, less mineral-driven wine. A more white-fruit cru, the perfumed nose shows peach and mangosteen notes beneath a mantle of jasmine blossom. With more ripeness and concentration of fruit on the palate, and less acidity than its fellow Premiers Crus, this offers earlier access for the discerning drinker. Drink 2025-2030
Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu
£175.00 per 6 bottles IB
The domaine’s most important Premier Cru site, covering a little under 5 hectares, the fruit is sourced from four different locations which share the same Kimmeridgian soils as the Grands Crus. Vinified with 15% new oak barrels, there is a complexity and concentration to the wine, where accents of lemon curd, ripe pear, and vanilla are balanced by subtle spice. There is a creaminess to the palate, yet still with that Chablisien energy and drive that leaves you wanting more. Simply superb. Drink 2025-2035
Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos
£295.00 per 6 bottles IB
Widely considered Chablis’ grandest Grand Cru, the Pinsons hold an enviable 2.5 hectares, and this is a site that is clearly in safe hands. Aromatically, the wine is already so complex, showing orange blossom, Japanese pear, and lemon zest against a backdrop of baking spice and gun flint. Complex yet elegant, the palate possesses superb balance where Les Clos’ natural energy is enlivened further by a lick of salinity on the finish. Drink 2026-2035
DOMAINE BILLAUD SIMON | CHABLIS
The Billaud-Simon name is long-established in Chablis, dating back to 1815 when Charles-Louis-Noel Billaud purchased his first vineyards. The estate remained in the family ownership for 200 years until Erwan Faiveley purchased Billaud-Simon for Joseph Faiveley in 2015. This represents a new era for the Faiveley family, one of the Côte d’Or’s most significant vineyard owners, now investing their expertise and commitment to producing great wines in the Yonne and Chablis with approximately 18 hectares of exceptional vineyard holdings.
Managed by Olivier Bailly on behalf of the Faiveley family, Olivier has very much maintained the house style. His aim is for wines with Chablis terroir authenticity; oak levels are kept to a minimum, and certain cuvées receive no barrel aging at all, going through an élevage on the yeast lees in cuve. Despite initial fears that the warmer 2023 vintage would result in wines with lower acidity, the longer the juice spent in tank, the more freshness there was, resulting in wines with terrific energy and vitality. Olivier has achieved everything he has set out to do, and the wines provide an extraordinary insight into the individual appellational styles within the region.
Chablis
£116.00 per 6 bottles IB
£131.00 per 3 magnums IB
With over 6 hectares of village Chablis adjoining both Premiers and Grands Crus sites, Olivier has all the ammunition to make a benchmark Chablis. Notes of golden apple and toasted brioche can be found on the nose, while the palate displays generous fruit and a delicate citrus pith finish. Though no oak is used during élevage, the steady maturation on the lees creates a style with great depth and purity. Drink 2025-2030
Chablis 1er Cru Les Vaillons
£204.00 per 6 bottles IB
Due to its exposure, this is one of the first places to be picked during harvest. What makes Vaillons so special is the balance both on the nose and palate. The former displays a mixture of hawthorn flowers and ripe nectarine, enlivened by hints of lemon zest and freshly squeezed grapefruit. From three separate locations, it is the site in Roncières in particular, with its 95-year-old vines, which gives the wine depth and complexity. Drink 2025-2032
Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu
£212.00 per 6 bottles IB
Located on the eastern side of town, this sizeable Premier Cru makes some of the more powerful wines in the region. This is a generous wine with the sunnier site giving rise to aromas of ripe apricot and peach, and a hint of Mirabelle plums. The palate shows plenty of drive, where opulence is balanced by mouth-watering salinity and an orange pith character that gives a delightful tension on the finish. As the wine evolves it will reveal a wonderful mineral core that will give pleasure for many years to come. Drink 2025-2035
Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre
£243.00 per 6 bottles IB
£258.00 per 3 magnums IB
Arguably the most sought-after of the Premiers Crus, Montée de Tonnerre lies alongside the great Grands Crus vineyards overlooking the town of Chablis. Billaud-Simon’s parcel sits on white clay and so the wine shows a natural depth of flavour, which needs no oak, in either vinification or ageing. Beautifully aromatic, the nose displays a rhythmic to-and-fro, shifting seamlessly from fresh grapefruit zest to ripe apricots, while the palate shows terrific freshness with flintiness on the finish. Drink 2025-2032
Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir
£420.00 per 6 bottles IB
£435.00 per 3 magnums IB
Sheltered from the cold Chablis winds, Vaudésir has the ability to produce very broad wines. Half of the blend is fermented and aged in barrel, with the rest in stainless steel, resulting in a wine of terrific balance. On first taste, the wine is austere, showing nervous energy, which gradually subsides to reveal a core of white stone fruit, quince, and freshly baked bread. A beautifully balanced wine. Drink 2025-2035
Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses
£473.00 per 6 bottles IB
£488.00 per 3 magnums IB
Recognised year on year for producing wines with great power and complexity, Les Preuses is one of the highest-rated Grands Crus of Chablis. Olivier has crafted another stellar wine in 2023; the nose is a wonderful assortment of clementine fruit, grilled peaches, and salted butter. Meanwhile, the palate shows tremendous depth and weight, with the wine’s natural textural richness elevated by a line of salinity and Chablisien drive. Drink 2025-2035
DOMAINE JEAN PAUL ET BENOIT DROIN | CHABLIS
To be the 14th generation of your family making wines in the same town since 1620 is truly remarkable. Over this 400-year period, the Droins have cultivated a sizeable estate of 26 hectares, boasting an enviable portfolio of appellations from both Grands and Premiers Crus within Chablis. Benoît joined his father at the estate in 1999 at the age of 24 and has, over the last decade, assumed total control. Whilst upholding the family’s respect for their fine terroir and soil, he has subtly adjusted the winemaking style. Today, the use of oak is less prevalent than in his father Jean-Paul’s time, leading to a greater terroir identity in the domaine’s wines, characterised by a mineral drive and edge. Benoît is firmly positioning himself and the estate as one of the greats of Chablis, consistently achieving top spots in blind tastings. In our view, his brilliance today is surpassed by none.
For Benoît, 2023 is a classic vintage which, at first sight, is very similar to the previous year. The main difference is that harvest temperatures were a little warmer, resulting in riper fruit and less strictness on the palate, yet the wines have not lost any of their hallmark freshness. He avoids the trend of long barrel élevage and is one of the earliest bottlers in the region, preferring just 8-10 months of barrel maturation. For Benoît, it is imperative to preserve both the fruit and freshness in a wine - the hallmark of great Chablis - and this superb range showcases his style perfectly.
Chablis
£234.00 per 12 bottles IB
From a selection of around 40 separate plots, this wine sees no barrel ageing and is a precis of the classic Chablis style. With fresh citrus fruit and limestone minerality, the warmer 2023 vintage has contributed some riper notes of apricot and golden apple. Supple and rounded on the palate, there is a nervous energy to the wine, with an almost salt-and-pepper liveliness on the finish. Drink 2025-2030
Chablis 1er Cru Les Vaillons
£177.00 per 6 bottles IB
Vaillons tends to be the prettiest and most floral of the Chablis Premiers Crus and Benoît’s 2023 edition is no different. On the nose there is a sweetness of fruit, where notes of white peach and apricot are balanced by lemon peel. One of the warmer Premiers Crus sites, this Vaillons is already so generous and accessible, with 25% barrel ageing adding another dimension of elegance and charm. Drink 2025-2032
Chablis 1er Cru Montmains
£195.00 per 6 bottles IB
Generally cooler than neighbouring Vaillons, with less stone and a higher proportion of clay in the soil, this is a richer and less overtly mineral style. Notes of preserved lemon and quince permeate the nose, while the palate shows wonderful weight and texture, where 40% of barrel ageing brings a creaminess to the finish. Layered and intense, this is superb. Drink 2025-2035
Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre
£225.00 per 6 bottles IB
With its clay-stone soils lending minerality and the superb sunny site imbuing the fruit with richness, Montée de Tonnerre really does offer the best of both worlds. The nose infers a wine of elegance and grace, where notes of orange pith, fresh apricot, and primrose dominate. The blue clay gives a roundness to the palate, while silex in the soil adds an oyster shell minerality to the finish. A wine of vim and vigour. Drink 2025-2032
Chablis Grand Cru Vaudesir
£348.00 per 6 bottles IB
Enclosed within the valley, this Grand Cru site enjoys intense summer heat and little air circulation, creating a wine with a broad-shouldered framework. Despite this, there is still a delicacy and floral characteristic to the nose, where a peach blossom perfume is in tune with notes of white stone fruit. On the palate there is a richness of fruit all the while retaining the incredible mineral backbone that makes Vaudesir a favourite of champions of Chablis. Drink 2025-2035
Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles
£408.00 per 6 bottles IB
The Droin holding is located on the flatter, sun-baked portion of the Grenouilles site, which results in a rich, heady wine. Certainly, the 2023 is intensely fragrant, displaying notes akin to a tarte tatin with Chantilly cream. The palate opens with generous fruit and body, yet it remains restrained throughout, with tingling salinity and oak spice keeping the finish fresh. Drink 2025-2035
Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos Hommage à Louis
£408.00 per 6 Bottles IB
This Grand Cru parcel has been in the Droin family since the 1920s. A full throttle Grand Cru, displaying aromas of nectarine and apricot underpinned by subtle accents of salted almonds. On the palate, you’ll find a sweetness of fruit and creamy texture that is kept in check by a stony minerality and slight reduction which adds some smokiness to the finish. This isn’t shy in showing off, and why should it be; this is a remarkable Grand Cru. Drink 2026-2036
DOMAINE WILLIAM FÈVRE | CHABLIS
William Fèvre is one of the great names of Chablis. However, in comparison to many estates in the region, William himself was a relative newcomer, producing his first crop in 1959. In a short space of time, he built it up to have substantial holdings in the town of Chablis, accumulating 48 hectares by 1998. 2024 is an exciting new era for this flagship estate, purchased by Saskia de Rothschild in January 2024 to form part of Domaines Barons de Rothschild’s vineyard holdings. It now consists of an enviable 78 hectares under vine, including 16 hectares of Premiers Crus and 15 hectares of Grands Crus.
Under the direction of technical director Didier Séguier, the vineyard management for the village wines is organic and the Premiers Crus and Grands Crus vineyards have been biodynamic since 2020. Didier describes the 2023 as generous in everything. The frost at the end of March had little impact on yields thanks to healthy flowering conditions and the vines were strong enough to repel mildew risks following some mid-summer rains. The crucial warm August days meant healthy ripening and Didier is convinced his decision to harvest early on 7th September was crucial to maintain the freshness and Chablisien core in his wines. Stainless steel vinification means a focus on primary fruit characteristics, prior to a careful barrel maturation of 8–12 months depending on the cuvée, with no new oak. The result is that he has absolutely hit the jackpot with his 2023s.
Chablis
£120.00 per 6 bottles IB
William Fèvre owns 47 hectares over 40 different sites within the appellation averaging 45 years of age. A maximum of 15% of the blend is barrel fermented, crafting a Chablis with charm and appeal. Characters of sherbet Dip Dab leap from the glass. This is a bright and racy wine, full of fresh grapefruit and oyster shell. Drink 2025-2030
Chablis 1er Cru Beauroy
£240.00 per 6 bottles IB
The Fèvre parcel of this left bank Premier Cru sits within the more distinctive sub-climat of Troësmes. The fruit is vinified in stainless steel and then 25% matured in barrel. A brilliant lemon-yellow colour gives it a shimmering edge in the glass. A floral and scented style, with characters of spring blossom and fresh nectarines. A degree of exotic richness at the end provides a glossy warmth at the end. Lovely persistence and so pleasurable. Drink 2025-2032
Chablis 1er Cru Les Vaillons
£250.00 per 6 bottles IB
£274.00 per 3 magnums IB
The Fèvre parcel within this fine Premier Cru has a naturally sunny exposition so it was the first vineyard Didier harvested in 2023. Floral white peach bouquet, the ripeness of fruit allows the wine to perfectly support the 35% of barrel ageing, contributing to the wine’s texture and depth. A little broader in style than some years, but still true to its Chablis DNA. Drink 2025-2031
Chablis 1er Cru Montmains
£250.00 per 6 bottles IB
£99.00 per magnum IB
Despite being a neighbour to Premier Cru Vaillons on the West bank, by contrast it is a late maturing vineyard due to its deep valley offering protection against the sun, so it is always the last plot that Didier harvest. The difference is huge, this is a wine full of tension, with its mineral edge and saline seashore scent and refreshing pink grapefruit flavours. A wine for the Chablis purist if ever there was one… Drink 2025-2032
Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume
£275.00 per 6 bottles IB
£107.00 per magnum IB
Not only does the domaine own an enviable 3.6 hectares of this famed Premier Cru. With a smoky, nutty aroma, the high degree of Kimmeridgian marl within the soil gives the wine a noticeable volume and density and an impression of muscle and power. Broad and full but with a lovely watermelon juiciness. Drink 2026-2033
Chablis 1er Cru Les Vaulorent
£335.00 per 6 bottles IB
£366.00 per 3 magnums IB
£571.00 per imperial IB
A particularly fine cuvée as the William Fèvre holdings are in the most prestigious location within the appellation, at the end of Vaulorent before reaching Grand Cru Les Preuses. The schistous nature of the soil produces a wine of striking intensity, with a tight line of mineral tension. With mouth-watering flavours of lemon sorbet and seashell, this is classic in every way. Drink 2026-2033
Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre
£345.00 per 6 bottles IB
£133.00 per magnum IB
£277.00 per jeroboam IB
This highly prized site neighbours the seven Grands Crus vineyards. Fèvre owns three plots amounting to two hectares, with the oldest parcel near Blanchot planted in 1936. Always a wine which exudes confidence, it has a warm creamy richness, with characters of almond and satsuma. Tremendous density, this is destined to age very well. Drink 2026-2034
Chablis Grand Cru Valmur
£480.00 per 6 bottles IB
£181.00 per magnum IB
Nestled in the middle of all the Grands Crus, Valmur sits in its own little valley and enjoys the warmth of summer heat. The William Fèvre parcel of Valmur sits alongside Grand Cru Les Clos and is therefore closer in style to its neighbour than some other wines from this vineyard. Floral aromas with summer jasmine and honeysuckle. The weight and concentration on the palate dominate the flavours at this point. As with many great wines, this is subdued in its youth, but there is huge potential and undoubted pedigree. Drink 2027-2035
Chablis Grand Cru Bougros
£400.00 per 6 bottles IB
£154.00 per magnum IB
£324.00 per jeroboam IB
William Fèvre owns 6 hectares within Bougros and makes two different cuvées. This wine comes from a 4-hectare parcel of old vines planted by William's father in the 1940s and 1950s. Arguably the most striking of the domaine’s Grands Crus at this early stage. A more giving fruit-forward style, with fresh Pink Lady apple and mandarin, juicy and fresh. Drink 2026-2033
Chablis Grand Cru Vaudesir
£500.00 per 6 bottles IB
Vaudesir's enclosed location is a favourite amongst the growers, with its warmer location often protecting it against vagaries of weather. William Fèvre own an impressive 3.2 ha of this fine Grand Cru. Their 2023 is a very fragrant wine, redolent with white peach, jasmine and rose petal. The opening sensation is a wine of extraordinary grace and charming subtlety and it quietly builds with sensual complexity. Yellow stone fruit flavours, with a tinge of bright lively freshness. The finish is serious and shows high class Grand Cru intent. Drink 2026 -2032
Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses
£520.00 per 6 bottles IB
The stony-soiled Preuses vineyard produces a style that is often a little reserved in its youth, but has a fine ability to age, maintaining plumpness with an earthy structure and depth. A wine full of delicacy and finesse, which carefully builds subtle citrus flavours on the palate, in harmony with a stoney, limestone freshness and tremendously long aftertaste. Excellent. Drink 2026-2035
Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Cotes de Bouguerots
£640.00 per 6 bottles IB
£239.00 per magnum IB
This 2-hectare site on the steepest slopes of the appellation creates a very impressive wine, showing off great minerality and salinity. Intensely refreshing grapefruit and lemon sherbet aromas, there is no doubting this wine’s Chablis origins. It contains everything for which the appellation is famous: oyster shell, citrus fruit, limestone lift and long earthy terroir complexity. Drink 2026 -2034
Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos
£660.00 per 6 bottles IB
£722.00 per 12 halves IB
£247.00 per magnum IB
£529.00 per jeroboam IB
A substantial holding of 4 hectares at the top of this great Grand Cru hill, with half the vineyard being planted back in the 1940s. A deep, full and confident wine, characters of Jersey cream and quince. A hugely impressive wine, keen to let you know that it is the star of the show… and rightly so. Drink 2026-2035
